@inFAMOUS770 gwyn turned hollow after linking the fire. The darksign, the curse that allowed the age of fire to exist where gwyn was the highest lord, had taken him as well. The darksign basically eventually turns everyone hollow, or insane, because it prevents them from dying permanently. The only way to reverse it all and return everything to the age of fire was for the pygmy's descendant to kill the guardian of the first flame, gwyn, and to rekindle it with the souls of the four lords.
@Gamemaster64 There's the Dragons like the Gaping Dragon, who went mad and for some unexplained reason, still exists. There's also the Undead Dragons, who are, well, undead, and Seath, who was granted amnesty for joining Gwyn. All the other "dragons" you're seeing in game are most likely drakes, inferior dragons.

I would like to know where it says the gaping dragon went mad because the only information I can find on him is that he was " a deformed descendant of the everlasting dragons."

What i don't understand is that how does the four have anything to with anything they were never mentioned in the prolouge and seath the scaleless destroying his own kind? Thats bull seath can't even fly or shoot fire out of his mouth. I mean 4 dragons is enough to take out seath, unless seath was immortal in the prolouge yeah thats understandable.
With the exception of the pygmy, the other 3 began the age of fire, or the age where the gods control what happens in the land. The pygmy took the Dark Soul and passed it along his descendants (you) in hopes that one day the age of fire would be overthrown and replaced with the age of darkness.
As for Seath, he's not just a dragon. He's the best sorcerer in the world, and got a piece of the lord soul. So he's more than just 1 dragon lol.
@fallout3sk100 They were granted a piece of a lord soul for their ability to 'think ahead' essentially, by Lord Gwyn. However, the power ended up corrupting them. What I get from the story is that they sacrificed New Londo for more power.
Just throwing this out there but, at 2:08, by any chance could that be the furtive pygmy with like...armor? Cause I mean it showed gwyn and the rest of them battling the dragons
@SuperStingray Same universe is speculative. There's no concrete evidence they are linked in any meaningful way. Patches could be the same patches from Demon's but just as likely could be a homage to Demon's. Looking at other characters in Dark Souls you can draw similarities also. Doesn't mean they're the same either.
I wanted FROM to tell me whatever happened to Vallarfax!!! I though maybe they should have added a hint or something, since Demon's Souls never clarifies Vallarfax's whereabouts... damn you Dark Souls, you pose even more questions!!! I know the two games are unrelated, but still...
@RajputRana420 I'm pretty sure that the Pygmy is a word for Men or Humanity. Many believes that the Pygmy is "You". The chosen Undead. It's definitely no Key character or Boss as they only mention it in the Prologue. But who knows. I think it's ment to be like this. Leaving people with their own view & thoughts about it :)
@MrGundestrup Actually, Pygmy was the one who found the Dark Soul and are you are his descendent. If you talk to Kaathe and opposed to Frampth, he tells you everything you need to know.
I hope they will be a DLC for Dark Souls....I know they said they won´t be any but I mean I played the game complete through and I couldn´t find the god damn pygmy....a DLC with the pygmy as the new endboss (e.g. after you choose the Dark Lord Ending Pygmy appears) would be awesome. A new area and the endboss would be the furtive pygmy.....any thoughts on this?

@DarthBobify well. as the game starts, the age of fire described in the intro is beginning to end and mankind is cursed by the undead plague. undead means that you become zombie-like after death, and eventually lose your mind ("going hollow").
your character is either; Gwyn's successor (you sacrifice your life, as he did, to keep the age of fire going) or the lord of darkness (you let the fire die and begin the age of dark). that's your choice.

@PS3rocks360gotohell your the descendant of the pygmy, because instead of drawing on the power of the Lord soul he had he drew it from darkness. Creating the undead I believe, and the giant snake people ( what kingseeker frampt is) had told some prophecy that eventually an undead would come to kill Gwyn and become the Dark Lord of Man. So now all undead are branded with the darksign and tossed away because Gwyn does not want that prophecy to come true.
Your character is the furtive pygmy (or its ancestor). You found the Dark Soul, which prevents insanity when you hollow, rather than going in sane when you hollow because of the dark sign.
It's all in the game dialogue if you look hard enough.
Are you trolling? Each of the bosses finds a "lord soul" and the pygmy finds the Dark Soul. Research your lore - one of the primordial serpents says "your ancestor found the dark soul which prevents insanity". Thus, you are the ancestor and this explains why so many npc's state how surprised they are that you aren't insane while you are hollowed. Humanity is just..humanity. Allows you to regain your human form when you die and become "hollow".
@belottov I have to disagree with you on this, humanity seems to be created before the "souls of lords" were even found since this video clearly shows human like creatures coming out of the dark, Nito is clearly made out of dead humans ,all the Lords are humanoids and it is confirmed in the game that mortals can become deities (the four kings for an example).
@Vaatiel You seem to be mistaken the Primordial Serpent Darkstalker Kaathe says "your ancestor claimed the dark soul, and waited for fire to subside" he does not say you do not go hollow due to the dark sign, he does mention that the art of life drain "can preserve your humanity" though. Also I cannot think of a single npc who is surprised that you have not gone insane they simply remind you to use humanity so you do not go insane in the future.

This was the first flame and was really POWERFUL. 4 dudes came out and said O LOL FIAR I SHALL HARNESS ITS POWAH. They killed the dragons. Eventually the FIAR faded and with it came the decline of human life. which resulted in the DARK SIGN and the UNDEAD. @EMOoftheFUNK before light is a bit of a misnomer, this is a time of equal light to darkness. the dragons are neither alive nor dead simply everlasting, same for the trees, everything is isothermal. but with fire came disparity, the fire made the world no longer isothermal, the light now had a source and was no longer omnipresent, and some were alive, and others dead. (note they never said the dragons died, only that they were no more. they were never strictly alive)

@rohleks 1. There is no * Undead * realm. There are undead all over the world and their lumped into the undead asylum. HOWEVER, the time bubble surrounding Lordran prevents any outside influence. ( The whole place is on top of a really high mountain it appears so even if there are people who O LOL I WANT TO RESCUE , not much chance of that happending.
2. I don't know, given the choice of living underground in darkness or staying on top where theres light. yea i'll take the above ground.

Humanity is some sort of sprite, but given that ingame notes state that " The fire-keeper's soul is gnawed by infinite humanity " it is logical that humanity is linked to the flames ( of the bonfire to a smaller extent and can be assumed to originate from the FIRST flame ) Estus, honestly i have no idea. There is utterly no reference to what estus actually is but judging they are treasured by undead and linked to the firekeepers, they can also be seen to be linked to the fire.
@armeggeon not quite accurate, the fire is the source of the undead, the humans are descendants of the furtive pygmy who found the dark soul in the flames, when the flames first faded this ushered in the age of man (presumably the power of the dark soul) gwyn, fearing the humans and the darkness sacrificed his soul to link the fires in an attempt to bring back the age of fire.
I know this isn't a in depth story driven game, but what the hell is going on? So there was a war with dragons and then their was peace and the peace faded into darkness???

the queen of izalit, gwyn, and nito all discovered lord flames which gave them great power, the furtive pigmy however found a different flame, the dark soul. the lords raged war with the dragons and defeated them but the flames began to die ushering in the age of man, (cont)
@TheRedemptionRain (cont)(spoilers)gwyn sacrificed part of his soul to link the fires and continue the age of fire, gwyn's youngest son gwyndolin was raised as a girl (not sure why, perhaps, as is often the case, to hide him from aggressors?) gwyndolin created a sister gwynovere and made anor londo appear to be light and bright when in actuality its in darkness and they are trying to get you to relight the flames, the story of the daughters of chaos is pretty intriguing too.
@TheRedemptionRain most of the story in the game is told by means of descriptions of items, talking to npcs (and that's not the normal 20 minute cutscene it is in some games, its a few lines of dialogue) its a game which challenges your preconceived notions, has absolutely NO disregard for your well being, and has hidden deep within its bowels a very intriguing story, amazing maps which help to tell the story (nothing is there just cus it looks cool) and not so much a difficulty curve as cliff.
@tuseroni I know that this game is suppose to be hard as hell with tough challenges that you have to overcome, but after playing Demon Souls I only had a small knowledge of what was actually going on in the game
@TheRedemptionRain in demon's souls? that one was rather clear cut: the discovery of the souls arts lead boletaria to be very prosperous the king alant who usurped the old king doran, took over the shrine of storms, the valley of defilement, stone fang, tower of latria in order to break the seal that was placed by the monumentals on the old one. the old one is a soul devouring demon and the source of the dredgelings which threatens to destroy the fabric of reality again. much lighter storyline.
IM READY FOR DARK SOULS COME BRING ON THE PAIN i owned all the mosters in demon souls not to forget the bossis thay where all weak even on pure black and i even owned in pvp with my blessed build (this legend will return soon)
@dewdwtfman nah the combat sytem in Dark Souls is far superior, although I am still excited for skyrim as well, can't we all just have our cake and eat it too?
I absolutely cannot wait, and I'm glad I gave in and also pre-ordered the Japanese version that way I can enjoy the game two weeks early since I'm a very impatient person, especially when it concerns Dark Souls XD

Thus, you are the ancestor and this explains why so many npc's state how surprised they are that you aren't insane while you are hollowed. Humanity is just..humanity. Allows you to regain your human form when you die and become "hollow".

humanity is formed from the dark soul found by the pygmy, he formed the humans, that would later fall to the lords and be cursed with the darksign.

@belottov I have to disagree with you on this, humanity seems to be created before the "souls of lords" were even found since this video clearly shows human like creatures coming out of the dark, Nito is clearly made out of dead humans ,all the Lords are humanoids and it is confirmed in the game that mortals can become deities (the four kings for an example).

@Vaatiel You seem to be mistaken the Primordial Serpent Darkstalker Kaathe says "your ancestor claimed the dark soul, and waited for fire to subside" he does not say you do not go hollow due to the dark sign, he does mention that the art of life drain "can preserve your humanity" though. Also I cannot think of a single npc who is surprised that you have not gone insane they simply remind you to use humanity so you do not go insane in the future.

@rohleks Ok cream puff - for - brains. I will spell it out. The world was at first just a blank landscape ruled by dragons. Then, OMG FIRE. This was the first flame and was really POWERFUL. 4 dudes came out and said O LOL FIAR I SHALL HARNESS ITS POWAH. They killed the dragons. Eventually the FIAR faded and with it came the decline of human life. which resulted in the DARK SIGN and the UNDEAD. ( As the fire = humanity and without humanity everyone is a crazy zombie. ) THAT ENOUGH?

@EMOoftheFUNK before light is a bit of a misnomer, this is a time of equal light to darkness. the dragons are neither alive nor dead simply everlasting, same for the trees, everything is isothermal. but with fire came disparity, the fire made the world no longer isothermal, the light now had a source and was no longer omnipresent, and some were alive, and others dead. (note they never said the dragons died, only that they were no more. they were never strictly alive)

@rohleks 1. There is no * Undead * realm. There are undead all over the world and their lumped into the undead asylum. HOWEVER, the time bubble surrounding Lordran prevents any outside influence. ( The whole place is on top of a really high mountain it appears so even if there are people who O LOL I WANT TO RESCUE , not much chance of that happending.
2. I don't know, given the choice of living underground in darkness or staying on top where theres light. yea i'll take the above ground.

Humanity is some sort of sprite, but given that ingame notes state that " The fire-keeper's soul is gnawed by infinite humanity " it is logical that humanity is linked to the flames ( of the bonfire to a smaller extent and can be assumed to originate from the FIRST flame ) Estus, honestly i have no idea. There is utterly no reference to what estus actually is but judging they are treasured by undead and linked to the firekeepers, they can also be seen to be linked to the fire.

@armeggeon not quite accurate, the fire is the source of the undead, the humans are descendants of the furtive pygmy who found the dark soul in the flames, when the flames first faded this ushered in the age of man (presumably the power of the dark soul) gwyn, fearing the humans and the darkness sacrificed his soul to link the fires in an attempt to bring back the age of fire.

@TheRedemptionRain the depth of the story is there, but not overt, you really have to hunt to figure it out. near as i can tell(spoilers) it goes a bit like this:
the queen of izalit, gwyn, and nito all discovered lord flames which gave them great power, the furtive pigmy however found a different flame, the dark soul. the lords raged war with the dragons and defeated them but the flames began to die ushering in the age of man, (cont)

@TheRedemptionRain (cont)(spoilers)gwyn sacrificed part of his soul to link the fires and continue the age of fire, gwyn's youngest son gwyndolin was raised as a girl (not sure why, perhaps, as is often the case, to hide him from aggressors?) gwyndolin created a sister gwynovere and made anor londo appear to be light and bright when in actuality its in darkness and they are trying to get you to relight the flames, the story of the daughters of chaos is pretty intriguing too.

@TheRedemptionRain most of the story in the game is told by means of descriptions of items, talking to npcs (and that's not the normal 20 minute cutscene it is in some games, its a few lines of dialogue) its a game which challenges your preconceived notions, has absolutely NO disregard for your well being, and has hidden deep within its bowels a very intriguing story, amazing maps which help to tell the story (nothing is there just cus it looks cool) and not so much a difficulty curve as cliff.

@TheRedemptionRain in demon's souls? that one was rather clear cut: the discovery of the souls arts lead boletaria to be very prosperous the king alant who usurped the old king doran, took over the shrine of storms, the valley of defilement, stone fang, tower of latria in order to break the seal that was placed by the monumentals on the old one. the old one is a soul devouring demon and the source of the dredgelings which threatens to destroy the fabric of reality again. much lighter storyline.
