I am an atheist. I want an atheist funeral. I hate places of religion. I embrace freedom, not other telling me what to do. I do not value marriage myself. I support gay marriage as choice for those who want it. I am a practing atheist. Lol! Thank you for posting.
Great point as usual. On the topic of a secular purpose, funny, if one was getting married in a town hall, no one would think to throw religious hypocrisy at them. There might be some people scoffing that they 'should have gotten married in the church.' Somehow religionists have such a corner on all the ceremonies and functions. Sorry to hear about your friend's colleague.
Surely if an atheist is a hypocrite for going to church for a funeral, a Christian is a hypocrite for entering a hospital when they are ill. Here's a quote to say god heals diseases:
Psalm 103:2 and 103:3
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.
I agree with Largo64. There was a tradition in my country to hold a "wake" after someone passed away. It was a day-long event in the person's house were friends and family would celebrate the deceased's life by sharing the experiances they had with him or her. I think that is a more fitting way to say goodbye by having a party in their honour rather than reading the same passages from the Bible or Koran
I can count the number of times I have been in a church on one hand. 2 funerals, 1 wedding and 1 quinceanera. I will not be having either my wedding or funeral in a church...
I've told my family that when I die I want to go to medical school. If the family want to have a remembrance, I've told them I'd prefer that they gave a party and invited all my friends to come and have a good time in my memory. I don't expect the name of god would be invoked on such an occasion even by a theist (some of whom are among my friends).
I like that. The British Humanist Assoc. also can provide "celebrants" to perform Humanist funerals and i have been told they can be quite moving as they help the family select music, poetry and readings and it's more personal than the religious type funerals.
Check with your local medical school many of them have a donor program you can join you get a donor card and if can be registered on your medical files. My accountant swears there is a charitable write off but that's his department not mine. I've been registered for 24 years.
I agree that there is nothing hypocritical about going to a wedding or a funeral. You are not, by attending, professing belief. You are merely expressing your respect for a friend or friends. I doubt that people, knowing of your atheism, would invite you to too many baptisms.
I Agree, funerals and weddings are social functions. The bible thumpers would like to act like its theres, but they like to claim everything belongs to their sky daddy.
