My Sensei was trained by this man, its really great to be learning Ryu-Te, its a very excellent martial arts in my opinion, and by far the best i've ever seen. ^^
very wise man, i was taught by the guy in 2:20, and saw a seminar with Oyata, best style to defend urself, if u are taught well it becomes second nature
In the early 1980's I took lessons from master oyata. I always thought he was one of the best martial artists in the world. Back when I was training there John Newton was instructing and there was a very promising fighter named "the animal". This was in independence Mo a very very long time ago. I hope the master is doing good and I miss those good old days I really do!
For anyone who wants to study with one of Oyata's long-term students, you can check out Koubushi Gossett's dojo in Liberty, MO (suburb of Kansas City). He's one of Master Oyata's highest degree black belts, and has studied under him for years.
Check out his website, where you can find demos and contact information. Just Google "ryukyu east asian martial arts" and you'll find it.
I love to practice Ryu Te! I'm in Kansas City, but had to leave for a few months to take care of some family problems. I'm going back soon and can't wait! I've only met Taika 3 times, but you learn alot in 1 class but you really must pay attention and study very diligently (spell?). I train with Kyoshi Lindquist and I'm missing it very much,I'm trying to get back at the end of this month. Wish me luck! Please!
Better yet, find the nearest dojo that teaches RyuTe & then attend a Taika Oyata seminar. If you are the same "Rangermed" that I know, you have already done that. Keep Training! See you in class.
I was not born early enough :(

I was wondering why he had a translator. Yes I too studied under him for several years. He is a great man. I thought he spoke English well enough.

Why does he have someone talk for him?
donteffwitme 2 years ago
He felt that his accent was too heavy to be understood on television. A very humble man.

I'm a shito ryu guy, but I love this guy. A shining example of true old-school karate in the modern age.

@gman114 "the animal" is Billy Wilcox. John Newton is in Jerusalem, Israel going by his Hebrew name: D'veed Natan. Google this name.
