The water takes all the energy from the laser. Thats why it wont pop. Also why they use a mixture of water and antifreeze in cars to cool the engine.

It will still pop, you just have to keep it in the same place for an obnoxiously long time due to the high specific heat capacity of the water in the balloon, if that laser has enough power to heat all of the water to within range of the temperature that the rubber needs to separate under tension then you have a popped water balloon! It will probably pop faster if you shine the laser at the top of the balloon :)

@dragonlasersfanman There is very simple science to this! The water in the balloon is rapidly cooling down the heat you are trying to generate with the laser on the balloon! You can try putting a lighter under a water balloon and it wont pop, if you have enough patients you can make water boil with a lighter and the balloon

You're right Vincent. There's an experiment that clearly shows what you're saying: it consist in paper box made of a 90 gr/sq-mt or so. Fill it with water and put it over a gas flame.Water will boil, the flame will be under the paper, but the paper will not burn. Heat transfer is enough to carry away heat from paper thus preventing it to heat higher than 100ºC, the water boiling temperature.

Obviously, the water in the balloon absorbs the heat, preventing a rupture in the surface. That volume of water would need a huge amount of energy to heat up.

Also, is your balloon green? If the balloon is the same colour as the laser, the laser will be less effective at burning it, because the light is not being absorbed.

It's because the rubber balloon has an melting point that is higher than the boilling point of water. In order for the balloon to pop you would first have to evaporate the water for the balloon to reach its melting point... (but try to melt the knot next time)
