  • Is it me or does Chris Stainton play the same piano solo for every Blues he does with Clapton?

  • I saw E C play a Gibson Explorer in PDX 1978 tour, he used it to play "Lay Down Sally", then went back to the black Strat

  • must be nice for the stones guys to finally play a proper improvisation ..;o)

  • dam that guy rips the piano up.

  • just don't like too much when he shifts up the tonic like that with no particular armonic scheme.....

  • Best ever! I love Explorers!

  • Awesome!!

  • I really love his vibrato!!!

  • wow, clapton with an explorer! absolutely rare!

  • clapton with a Explorer, how rare to see or better never seen before

  • He's playing an original 1958 Gibson Explorer. Some estimates say there were fewer than 100 made - easily the most underappreciated electric guitar in rock history.

  • Fabulous!! I'm playing this in a blues club tonite in London!! Think all those drummers would be overkill tho!!!

  • check claptons grin out at the intro!! knows its a good un

  • I was there. Not a dry eye in the house when Ronnie came on.

    RIP.

  • I can see Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and the drummer of The Band too

  • @schampz

This may have been brought up before, but the other drummer is not Levon Helm of The Band. It is Ray Cooper, a great session drummer and complete attention whore on stage (I mean that in the best sense of the world. He has more fun on stage than anyone.).

  • Clapton is great here as always, but to me, the rest of the band sounds as if they're all half-asleep. They contribute absolutely no energy to the song.

  • its an ERIC CLAPTON show. others are not on the spotlight

  • oh my god.... soooo young, and soooo good.

  • This one is for Deesje, cause I've never loved a woman as much as I love her

  • Stunning band damn it!

  • Guitars just melt in his hands... nice vid and thank you for uploading this.

  • Eric Sounds way better with a Gibson...

    SG, Explorer, or ES-335.

  • Where is this Stratocaster? If he don't like Blackie, he could to give me... lol

  • he sold it for almost one million bucks to fund "crossroads"

  • CLAPTON IS GOD!!!!!!!

  • God himself, indeed. The power, the feeling... equalled only by Hendrix, maybe.

  • look at theeeeeseee loooong FINGERS !!! CLAPTON you fucking great asshole... i wish i have so long fingers too

  • i'll probably get attacked for this, but for me clapton always sounds SO much better playing a gibson...

  • hell yeah :)

  • I've always said that. Finally someone agrees with me!!!

  • Yes! Eric is THE Les Paul player. Hendrix's influence had him switch to Fender but he's undoubtedly the Gibson King to me.

  • @mistersnaredrum , i've ALWAYS said that, and i've heard before that the only reason he switched to fender was that they payed him a 7 million. which really, we would all do too, lol, but his tone especially now on those new strats he played are just kinda iunno, different i guess, lol. long live the 335!

  • @DVDAable cool man wish gibson had payed him that tho !!

  • @DVDAable I believe EC in his autobiography said he decided to play a Strat because of his admiration for Buddy Guy. He played a Strat in Derek and the Dominos. His Brownie Strat, played on the "Layla" album (and his first solo album) and at Concert for Bangladesh, is on display outside the Guitar Gallery at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. He later bought six Strats at a music shop in Memphis (IIRC), gave three away, then used the best parts of the other three to build Blackie.

  • @DVDAable Back in the early 1970s? I doubt it! I wouldn't be surprised if he got that for his custom made series in the 1990s, however.

  • @mistersnaredrum I think he sounds great playing an SG, and an ES-335, but other than that, I like hearing him with a Strat.

  • Charlie Watts for Prime Minister!

    ... of the WORLD.

  • Jeff Beck's nowhere to be found on this song. That's Bill Wyman on Bass and Charlie Watts on drums, otherwide known as THE ROLLING STONES!

Don't know who the other guitarist is.

  • the other guitarist is Andy Fairweather Low

  • @chaichan i have the ARMS concert DVD where Ry Cooder is credited as the other guitarist – could be a misprint or a faulty memory on my part...

  • Comment removed

  • @jhs5150 the DVD is a two volume set

    Beck is on Disc 2

(this is from Vol. 1 / Disc 1)

  • LMAO, clapton with an explorer, he looks so odd man. Love the song

  • explorer was introduced to the world in 1958, not something new skool.....

  • lol ye i know, just weird seeing him with one, cos he hardly ever uses one, in most pics and vids.

  • @jimpson7 i agree with you

  • cool song and nice guitar

  • this is one of my favorites from back in the day Eric Clapton is one of the greats and that is all that counts. Wonderful video , thank you.

  • claptons worst sound by far so tinni

    but clapton still god

  • cocaine period

  • all those key changes.

  • wyman kinda plods

  • Stones rhythm right in the pocket.

  • ITS BLUES MY BABY!

  • Now, I think Gibson actually made a custom Shop version of Eric explorer here. limited to 250 I believe. I saw one on ebay, and it was the same color as this with gold hard ware, and intead of coming to a point in the back where the strap button is, it's cut off. Odd, but beautiful at the same time.

  • Are you sure you're not thinking of his red ES-335? I know Gibson made replicas of that guitar. I didn't think Clapton's Explorer was famous enough for that.

  • No, not his es-335. I saw it on Ebay, the explorer that is. It was brown, like Claptons, and had gold hardware. The only diffrence was that the one on Ebay had a straight cut back in stead of the point. could have been a fake, I don't know, but it looked awesome.

  • I know this is a little late, but I found out that Gibson indeed produced replicas of Clapton's Explorer (only 25 of them). The Explorer he used in the 70's is not the guitar in this vid, though, because he had cut the bass point-thing off to make it more comfortable to play.

  • Yes

you are right , i bought that great guitar for a good price , it's a custumshop (cs) and after ome research I found out (but not 100% sure )that a small production was made for a japanes order ( 25 ??) this guitars are cutomshop and another small production was made by gibson self and they have the historic art logo on the arm but also in a very few number .The guitar looks and sound fantastic ! I hope I helped you with that information , all the best from blegium , Geert

  • Yeah baby....That's some good ol' down home rough cut stuff...

  • o my god... eric clapton with jimmy page and ronnie lane, that's amazing!

  • I've never seen Eric Play and explorer. wow, thats awesome. lol

  • I love the Key changes in this version by EC but have yet to see him play it like that live, I live in hope. He should play it like that again. Not heard anybody else do this has anybody else?

  • There's a video of him doing Driftin' Blues w/ the key changes.

  • There's a live album from 76 - "EC Was Here". Runs through the changes on that version and it's a great great solo

  • This is the first time that I've seen Clapton with an Explorer guitar...

  • thats a gibson explorer not a thunderbird!!! but ye are right its really nice to see him using it!

  • Gibson Thunderbird,so great sound and tone! E.C he´s got a soul!

  • Thunderbird isn't doing a thing....it is the master utilizing that baby.

*Friends, this reminds this old south texas gal of the good times at Antones and Riverside being plessed to pick a little with these masters of the guitar, drums, vocals and keys. They give us life.

  • its great to see a gibson in his hands

  • at one point he used only gibsons

  • Not at all. Remember Blackie!

  • ya after cream after the bluesbreakers after blind faith in cream he used a gibson sg and one of his favorite guitars ever was a gibson es 335

  • he didn't use a strat until '70. he was already established as god for 5 long years on gibson guitars before he used blackie. the first instance i can think of him using fender was the tele w/ strat neck he sometimes used with blind faith ('69).

  • I was at the Hyde Park free concert by Blind Faith in 1969 and have just got the dvd. That did take me back. I don't think it matters what guitar he plays he makes good music with them all.

  • Clapton used a fender telecaster during the Yardbirds days

  • Right!

  • Remember The Yardbirds

  • Have u ever loved a women is by far the best piece of Clapton

  • its by freddie king originally.

  • True :)

  • I love how you guys over-analyze blues lol--its friggin' BLUES!!! shut up and listen

  • well said aug5

  • @augfive

    :)

  • eric made robert johnson songs famous...withoutr him the blues stays forever in usa..in mississipi delta ..respect slow hand ..respect!!!

  • eric clapton ist simply the most heartful guitar-player i have ever heard.

  • no mustache or beard...wow

  • yeah , well he was young at this time. Sort of grew out of all that hair stuff.

  • Derek played with EC in the 2006 tour, not the contrary, I believe. All my respect to all the great Guitarists but Eric, as a white blues player, is and will remain the top (only SRV can match him)

  • Hmmm....you may wanna look into some Peter Green sometime.

  • my posts never show up where they are supposed to - this was in response to an earlier remark by phisterlogsauce.

  • Never seen EC playing that stuff. IMHO the instrument counts a little. Greatest white living guitarist.

  • No, DT said that EC could have done whatever he wanted, but he gave them spots...

  • oh wow. so that's Jeff Beck playing chords...

  • It doesn't matter whether you like Eric's style of music, or not... He is a great musician.

  • love how i can come onto youtube and see footage like this of some of the greatest musicians ever but im always gutted to see people writing crappy comments. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if people dont have anything constructive to say why say anything at all? This is a quality version, reminds me of the one played on the timepieces album. Clapton is amazing thnx for postin it. Peace

  • I've been waiting almost 25 years to hear this again. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

  • Ouahhhh, que du lourd, et du blues comme il se doit. Très belle prestation de EC

  • For anyone with even the faintest interest in great guitarists this is surely PORN!!!!!!!!!! Fuckin love it. xxx

  • EC did this best in on medley when he did Drifitng/Rambling I cant remember the album but it was an album that full of medleies. One of his best albums foo shoooo but yeah here is good esp having cooper and page around

  • Great song,by the way

    Laura

  • I this the Dec 9, 1983 Madison Square Garden in New York ?

I was at MSG and it brings back many memories!

    Thanks

  • you`re welcome,believe me...it was my pleasure.

  • great blues from EC!

  • Thanks...anything from EC is good,I think.

  • charly and bill - ever the heart of the ( this time slow ) rhythm - and eric Is god - beside keef ! ;-)))

  • listen all of human beings, you all should go to hell.

  • if you live a true life of the blues man you are in hell, so live with it, life is hell, god didnt say dont listen to the blues, bob dylan playes the blues and he is a beliver whats up with that ,

  • Life is Hell? If you`re a blues fan, you`re life sucks?

What`s "God" have to do with this? You have a warped perception of blues & life,Bud. You must be miserable.

  • life is what you make of it, sounds like your just misserable, have a good one and i love the blues becuse it has soul meaning defietion, meaning not just some head banging bull to call music, there is a story a feeling in the blues. yupypu youll be alright scrap pruple hazze :)

  • Wow,...chill out,man.

  • Clapton is a fairly good bluessinger and a fairly good guitarist, but a bit boring...

  • well... strange almost every guitarist has been through a "clapton period" if he just was a fairly good guitarist...

  • you are a fucking retard, congrats!!

  • Blasphemy,I tell you! You should be thrown off the site for this!!

  • it's hard to take people like you seriously. I'm not sure why you seem to want to marginalize EC's playing. expand your listening a bit. make certain that you have a real feel for his music before you make such a ridiculous sweeping remark. most comments like this come from people who have only been exposed to clapton's mainstream tracks or have only heard one or two songs. Sorry, but you're simply wrong. It's just ignorant to deny talent when it's so obviously undeniable.

  • this was posted in response to phisterlogsauce but it didn't show up where it was supposed to.

  • We all like who we like - that's fine by me. I just bought a copy of the SRV/Albert King live/studio recording. I just see way too many negative comments from people who clearly haven't really LISTENED to the artists they denigrate. In fairness, this video is not one of my favorites. But in general, Clapton serves up some of the best blues interpretations I've heard. And, he seems to truly love and respect this form of music - which goes a long way with me.

  • I totally agree

  • You're very right, when you know the 2 originals of this song by R.Johnson this rendition is very flat & uninspired. I dig it the hard way, check out 'sliding' Ana Popovic & you'll know what I mean! SRV & Elmore are OK. Nevertheless the 'EXPLORER' sounds great.

  • Sorry, this above remarks were a reaction on: Phisterlogsauce's entry.

  • crapton the best

  • Ahah nice joke

    ...no sorry that's not funny...

  • My comment on the Firebird was in response to matthewT,"Eric used an Explorer with Cream". He started with a LesPaulStandard(stolen), and went onto the GibsonSG(now owned & played by Todd Rundgren), Gibson335(purchased while in The Yardbirds)and the GibsonFirebird.I know this because I purchased both of The Crossroads Auction catalogs.(EC guitar auction)

  • He gave one black Les Paul to Albert Lee.

  • wow!

  • I was lucky enough to catch both NYC shows never saw footage beautiful.....

  • Eric played a Firebird with Cream. This is a 1958 Gibson Korina Explorer which he sold in 1996 at The Crossroads auction in NYC.(one of only 19 models shipped in 1958!)It's conservative worth is probably in excess of $500,000.-$750,000. I love Bill Wyman's Travis Bean TB-2000 Bass.(made of Hawaiian Koa wood)

  • i thought clapton played an SG and a 335 with cream.

  • yeah he used the firebird on white room

  • are u a claptonologist, is that yar job.

  • no. i'm not a 'claptonologist'. i'm just someone who knows what guitars artist use on their recordings and what they play on stage. next time you post, try using english reatard. 'yar', 'u a '. come on. you embarrass yourself in front of the world writing like that.

  • no im very proud of myself

  • clapton is a legend!! the original 'rambling on my mind' is by robert johnson!! search it !!

  • Just love that Korina Explorer!

  • ERIC CLAPTON is such a gifted guy. there will only be one guitar legend like him. Great voice too. I love you Eric!!- sunflower

  • This was one of my favorite tapes. Of really making a "song" out of the blues, where there was a theme , and telling a story, with the lead guitar. Not just a bunch of "runs" like everybody else.

  • i've always thought clapton was always best at blues

  • fabulous song... it reminds me of my dad because he always plays it on the piano =)

  • Is this from the ARMS concert?

    They sound great!

  • yup it is. awesome!

  • have u guys ever loved a woman, well i have, and there is nothing else i regret in my life.

  • I apologize for women of the world, nobody should`ve hurt you enough to make this song their anthem.

  • then i suggest you have never been in love like eric was, he lost his ole lady, and this was just a song, and i dont think its an anthem, its the blues, take it for what it is, blues man blues , feeling the blues

  • Did you read my other comment..and shit,I`ve been mighty hurt in my life. I can identify with the songs, sad to say.

  • we all have been hurt thats the blues it's what it's all about, letting out the hurt the pain sharing it with everyone, bob dylan born again and an extremly great blues player yet today thatnks sorry you were hurt, its life , blues it up and carry on.... yupyup scrap purple hazze

  • How the hell do you know how I have loved or been loved? Or how I`ve been hurt? You don`t know me or anything about me. Don`t make assumptions without fact,Jack.

  • at 0:54 looks like Clint Eastwood! :)

  • Straton, yeah , it's true. also at 0:41 too

  • I know EC played this Gibson, I believe a Firebird, an awful lot in his early career. Regardless of his thin tone in this version, still a great song(s).

  • explorer voodoo...

  • Seems the peak was too early...ran low on steam? Would love to have caught this live anyhoo. EC redeems 'self from "wonderful tonight" even if that entered after. Does Wyman have a slide on middle finger? (c. 7 min)

  • who are you talking about; eric clapton?not even an average artist? go to hell jurk..

  • Incredible backing band, but what a lousy, wishy washy, not even average main artist. O.K., the lead vocals are done very well, but the guitar sound is the opposite.

  • Damn, YOU, Wuskul, Lardass56 and abtscot are really a band of fucking bashers

    Go to hell

  • doesnt anyone recognise rolling stones bassist bill wyman up there?...

  • of coarse but he always kept a low profile, he doesn't want anyone to know he is up there!!

  • not really eric used to use an explorer in CREAM! ive got a set of promo pics that has him playin one, and alos in the who movie tommy..also a fan of the sg as played in cream..the first time i saw eric and a strat was derek and teh dominoes with duane allman(who by the way was playing a strat if i remember the article..

whoever noted that he made a mistake...well if blues were menat top be perfect bb king would been pat boone wouldnt he...

  • he makes a mistake at the beginning isnt he? but this is great!!

  • Some superb playing from Mr Clapton in this one!

  • Too bad they didn`t mention Stevie Winwood playing in on this one.

  • shame hes sold all of his gibsons, they were made for each other

  • He still has a bunch of Gibsons (and has played Les Pauls and ES-335s on his current tour); he just sold his most famous Gibson.

  • I've never heard Rambling on My Mind done this way before.

  • first time to see Eric Clapton using a Gibson Explorer..

    wired ...isn't it

  • yes, but that made me fell in love with gibson korina explorer :)

  • Damn, I always get confused between the Explorer and the Firebird.
