  • This is by far the best version I've ever heard of this song. I can see why it went all the way to #1 on the Irish charts. Emmet Spiceland crafted a beauty with this rendition.

  • The CD version of the album has "Mary of Dungloe" but

with a slight variation in the presentation that makes the

song sound even better than on the origina LP.

  • I still have the album, and i treasure it. I met Phil Coulter once and asked him would he reissue the album. Nope. But he has the tapes.

  • Reminds me of my childhood growing up in Dublin when Irish folk was at it's peak compeating on Irish radio with American West coast , mainstream pop ie ,mama and papas, byrds, beach boys as well as UK influence beatles ,stones etc .But this takes me back to fonder days and times the like of which we will never see again .Pity the TOTP video is not around ,thank you

  • @luxyaltz219

Well said , we won't see them again , things have changed too much .

    making me cry .

  • @Neves376 I was born in Dungloe and lived in the united states for three years in the late eighties and this song was always guaranteed to bring a tear!! I think Brian Byrne brought out a solo album after spiceland split up!!

  • @teddyoneills ,,,I was born in Mayo and have been living in England since i was 8

...My Irishness is all important to me .:-).

  • Lovely Site great videos cheeeeers

  • They were the bettlemania of Ireland back in their day. Brian and Michael Byrne, Donal Lunny, Brian Bolger and Mick Moloney - modernised the folk scene in Ireland.

First to get on Top of the Pops with Mary from Dungloe. Brilliant group.

  • Heart-wrenchingly beautiful song.

    Thank you, machree01

  • There is a song my father used to sing to me.. Shane MacGowan used the air for "The song with no name".. .."remember laddie he's still your Dad, tho' he's working far away...." Anyone know what that is?

  • The song is titled "My Little Son".

  • Thank you again.. Will check out Luke Kelly's version...Used to hang out with one of his old mates when I lived in Dublin

  • @machree01 Also called "England's Motorway"

  • come my little son ,listen to luke kelly;s version to get the true feel of the song

  • @OSLAINTE123 It's the Dublinliner's "Come My Little Son - a.k.a "England's Motorway"

  • Breaks my heart every time I hear this.

  • I love this song so much, thanks for the posting. First heard it in Croke Park, 1968 when all the GAA freaks threw the Fanta bottles at them (first time tthe Artane Boys Band didn't play). Anyone remember?

  • Brings back wonderful memories we used to go to see them every Friday night in Liberty Hall Dublin when I was a girl ..great stuff many thanks Mac x

  • Wunderschön !!

  • wonder how you get the backing track

  • Get album, Emmet Spiceland "First"

Brian Byrne singing "My Lagan Love"

is Brilliant, a joy to listen to, as is the

    whole album.

  • a must beautiful tune thanks for sharing your melodies god love ya xxxx

  • A beautiful song!!! : ) I was brought up with songs like these. They're still sung at weddings and family gatherings... thank you for posting. Love and peace to you, Patricia.

  • we wer lucky, we had this sung first hand by tony rua, rip & God Bless u, xx

  • When I was young this was the type of music we listened to all the time. This is why the Irish are such a great musical nation. How could we be otherwise with this type of heritage. Songs from the heart. Songs sung with love and feeling. Awsomely beautiful. Thank you Machree01 for posting it.

  • this reminds me of 25 years ago when i listened to my my mother singing in the kitchen, god bless. miss u xx

  • The definitive version of this beautiful old song. Pity the Emmet Spiceland didn't stay together longer. They were a very fine group.

    Thanks for posting this Machree.

    Terry.

  • Beautiful version of this song! Thanks!!

  • Thanks for a great post and a lovely song.

I hadent heard of ES before Ronan collins played a song of theirs a couple of days ago.

  • Memories of sitting in my mothers kitchen after school with so many great songs like this playing on the radio

  • Beautiful song , lovely place

  • Great song! Thanks!

  • I first saw this in Croke Park in September 1968, when The Artane Boy's Band didn't play for the first time. The Irish threw empty bottles at them, but I thought it was beautiful and bought the single the next day.

  • This is a great version of this song, teriffic harmonies.

The only negative thing I have to say is I have searched everywhere to buy a CD with it on, can I find it, not yet.

If mr Lunny wants his retirement royalities , I suggest he knocks heads with a few other artists who performed great songs from this era and release "rick Ruben" styled album of classic celtic ballads with all the production crap removed and let the pure music come out

  • If you like this song, check out my mum singing it,a better video will be up shortly :)

    Long live Irish balads

    xxx

  • it's simple a BEST

  • I have friends in dungloe, magical song.

  • i can remember this when i lived in Scotland and wanted to live in Ireland as the music is great. thanks for posting.

  • ill bet anyone i know who sung this tune an i can prove it:D

  • Brian Byrne is the lead singer in this song - the Byrne brothers are relatives of mine!!

  • I am 2nd generation Irish American from Cleveland. Never been to Ireland and probably never will but it is songs like this that paint such beautiful images of Ireland and I'd pay before I would go!

  • Sorry, my previous message mentionned à friend named Patrick Rafter. I made a small mistake: was not Patrick but Thomas Rafter.

    JF

  • Reminds me when I was a kid living in Nenagh from 1965 to 1968. Moved back then to Canada but since then I feel like I'm a bit Irish. Loved to get back in touch with my friends Kevin Walsh or Patrick Rafter who lived near by. Those were the days. Haven't gone back to Ireland but it's just a question of time to go visit one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Love this song that brings back to mind some great memories. If anyone knows my old friens, let me know.

  • did you live in Ballygraigue and did your father work for Mogul (Silvermines)?

I was born in Nenagh, 1957 and left in 1979.

I think I knew you but forget your name.

    Sheimi O'Connor

  • Hi there, Yes my dad did work for Mogul and we lived in one of the 16 houses (2 Knights Crescent)owned by Mogul. I went to the Christian Brother school (had brother Joyce and brother Smith as teachers)and another person before them (not a brother). I remember one other kid I had in my class: David Monk and that's about it. Were you in thoses classes? Did you know any of the kids I mentionned before? My name is Jean Francois Manibal. Had a sister and a brother. Let me know more about you. Thanks

  • I think, it´s Danny Doyle

  • It's one of these who is the lead singer Donal Lunny, Brian Byrne, Michael Byrne, Mick Maloney & Brian Bolger. Danny Doyle didn't play the Emmet Spiceland Group. Thanks for commenting on it anyway.

  • @machree01 That's Brian Byrne doing the lead.

  • @machree01 That's Brian Byrne doing the lead.

  • antoconno my mam used to go to see emmet spiceland in liberty hall in the sixies during the folk boom she just loved hearing this tune again

  • anyone know the name of the singer???? hes not apart of emmet spiceland,

  • Emmet Spiceland were Michael & Brian Byrne, Donal Lunny and Brian Bolger. Brian Bolger left and the band continued as a trio. I don't know which is singing here. (Not much help here then, sorry).

  • Oh, then fare ye well, sweet Donegal, the Rosses and Gweedore.

I'm crossing the main ocean, where the foaming billows roar,

it breaks my heart from you to part, where I spent many happy days.

Farewell to kind relations for I'm bound for Amerikay.

Wonderful,it reminds me of wonderful days unfortunately gone by.I definitely love this song.

  • Brian Byrne made an album in the mid 70'.Can recall one number "Magherafelt Matfair. A really good album. He may have popped up latter with a singls called The Hills of Granemore.

I was just a lad but I got to spend 3 weeks in 1968 in and around Dungloe in 1968--It brought sanity to an insane world.--Best vacation except for my honeymoon.

    Red

  • Really? Im from Dungloe. You'll never forget that. Great song

  • The Emmett Spiceland a quare name but great stuff, this is the best version of this song, great singers.

  • I work with Micheal Byrne. He still plays a regular Tuesday evening slot in Bristol and I know that he sells CDs of his and Emmets music to anyone who is interested.

He has a beautifull CD of him singing with just his accustic guitar. Just Fab.

  • I'm interested, have always loved this song sung by Emmett. Thanks!

  • Wow, give him my regards, and tell him what I said about Croke Park in 1968.

    Tay Ba Lo

  • The Emmet Spiceland Folk Group, through the years were Donal Lunny, Leo O'Kelly, Brian Byrne, Michael Byrne, Mick Maloney & Brian Bolger. I am not sure if they were Dublin Based.

  • They were originally Donegal based (1968)

  • I went in to one of Dublins famous music shops and I asked for a CD of emmet spiceland and she asked me who he was. I could not belive it. Such a great group, vocally, instrumentally and every way. No CD's available, Im afraid.

  • This is one of their songs "Baidin Fheidhlimi /Nora Bheag" no. 6 Irish charts, they didn't stay togather for very long. you wood only find their songs on a Complition CD, with other artist. it would be very hard to find CD.

  • It is a pity there is not specific CD. They also had the Curragh of Kildare and Carrickfergus. Were they Dublin based?

  • @edymull - Carlin's records in hill street, Newry, co. Down might have it but they can order it for you (for such a small record shop they are great)

  • Does anyone have the "Bells of Shandon"? I have been looking for that tune as long as I can remember but have never found this groups version but I used to hear it on accuradio.

  • Eat your heart Danial O'Donnell , Great band

  • Well said dardo

  • class.

  • lovely voice,
