  • marks music brings back some hard times, i can appreciate them now. good lessons. thanks for the music and video.

  • this is my all time favorite video. i can remember when it came out. Mark Gray is an awsome writer and singer.

  • Also have it on my computer on a hard drive but don't ask where-Just know I have it

  • I have the video on an VCR Tape somewhere on my collection

  • Wow made me cry about a man in the past that said this was his song to me. Looking 20 years later, how sorry I am for him feeling that way. I am so sorry Joe Frank. You know who you are.

  • I saw this video for the first time on CMT back in the 80's and after that he simply disappeared and to where I do not know, however he is a great artist, an excellent singer and deserved much more recognition than he got. I have always loved this song.

  • Geez. I don't know how I never heard of this man until today. His voice is excellent. I started to listen to some country music in the early 80's, but then stopped for a bit. I missed him during that time. Now country is probably my favorite music since so much pop and rock sucks today.

  • Yeah and I wrote the song lol.

  • such a heartfelt voice i love this vid

  • I love this video

  • I HAVE LOVED THIS SONG FOR SO MANY YEARS.... AFTER MY DIVORCE.. I PLAYED IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN... I STILL LOVE IT... BEAUTIFUL... BEST SONG EVER.....!!!!

  • Mark is one of the most talented writers and singers on the planet.

  • I have been looking for this since I had the cassette of "Magic" way back when. So nice to hear these songs again! Mark will ALWAYS be a favorite!

  • Who knew Mark could act so well? He hit #10 in Billboard, 4-21-84. God bless!

  • If you can go to Tommy Jett's website, you can see a rewind of Mark Gray's video interview from Friday.

  • This is what music videos are supposed to be. Ever musician should use this as a benchmark for the music video standard.

@russellbenoit Uncle Charles passed away back in 1999. My father, Dennis is the brother closest in age to Mark. We were sitting up last night listening to old demos that Uncle Mark recorded years ago. Even at the rawest production level, his music is still powerful.

@34fastback, I love This Ole Piano, it is probably my favorite song he ever did.

  • Mark gray is my great uncle! hes my papaws brother and i wish i could meet him he is such an amazing singer!

  • @babygirlshack04 hes my uncle to i swear

  • @babygirlshack04 do you know my paw paw denis

  • Over his career, singer/songwriter Mark Gray endured many ups and downs. He was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, the youngest of seven children. His mother died when he was two, and he was raised on Lookout Mountain, Georgia by his aunt and uncle. It was there that he began singing gospel music and learned to play piano. He returned to his father's 250-acre Mississippi farm when he was 15 and later became a finalist on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. He also began singing commercial jingles.

  • Haven't seen this 1 since the days of TNN. Thanx for postin' it. God bless!

  • I met this guy years ago, with the Sweeneys that used to live in Welsh. they were family friends. great guy, sings better in person. I will always remember going to watch him do a video in a cotton field in south west mississippi, the video started and all he was worried about was did they catch him smoking in the video, he was worried about his mom catching him smoking, lmbo. Great Video y'all

  • to tazie50, it's been years but, I dont know if mr.Charles is still living, yuor right on utica, or maybe learned, ms. I met them all years ago, when Mark was still trying to hida his smoking from his mom. lol

  • I love this song!! I first heard it 5 years ago, when my husband passed unexpectedly from a massive heart attack. He always slept on the left side of the bed.

  • An absolutely great video and song. Beautiful memories - beautiful girl - not many to compare. We need more songs like this

  • Man, what a great old song.

  • I miss you Joel...and love you still.

    Always.

  • I am the girl in the video. And I love this song!!!

  • @jengagirl1 Did you 'act' mute, or are you that way in real life? Could you get back to me on it, that'd be great. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg DEFINITELY NOT MUTE!!!!! When I posted the comment YouTube sent replies to an email address I had set up but never used. My newer crackberry with it's infinite wisdom, recognizes and sends email from all email accounts. I got your message yesterday. Which led me to your earlier mail.

  • Oldie, but goodie! Love it.

  • This is an awesome video. !!!! I Have looked for alot of years to find this. thanks so much for posting.

  • Does Any body know Mark's cousin Jeff Gray? He lived in Brandon,Ms but i think he lives in Utica,Ms now.I think Mark's brother also lives in Utica.Has Any one heard from him lately? He sent me a email about a year ago but nothing since.

  • @Tazie50 Just recently found out that Mark has had a stroke.

  • I used to live in Lancaster/Palmdale area.... This road looks like the one that goes through PearBlossom... This is my all time favorite video and song.... I am glad it is on-line now...

  • 3:16 to 3:25 THAT'S MY PARENTS' OLD BEDROOM! Lancaster California, my brother just told us he found this vid, we had forgotten they filmed part of this video in there not too long after we moved out. Wow......

  • I used to live in Lancaster, California... I have a lot of good memories of the area.... I'm sure it does not look like it did in the 50's and 60;s when I was there.

  • I remember our next door neighbors being a loong way down the road, tumblewood constantly blowing around...

  • I have looked for this song for 20 years. Not even my local radio stations could find it. Thank!!!

  • This song makes my heart ache for the man I loved when this song came out. What beautiful memories!

  • Did he ever do a video for Please Be Love?

  • Does any know if Mark ever did anything in Hollywood, movie or the like?

  • did Mark ever do "This Old Piano" as a video? just wondered, it was a personal favorite of mine.

  • 34fastback, I don't think he did. If he did, I too would love to know.

  • Mark I love this video Lawanda

  • the album magic was amazing, my favorite was feeling fire from a friend, i wish there was more mark gray on here the album magic should have went platinum, and i'm not even a big country fan,but this was before it's time

  • I remember this song from YEARS AGO... It's been in my head and I've been trying to remember the name... tonight at 11:30pm I'm laying in bed and I think of the name... Over 20 years later!! WOW

  • Johnfern99, I agree with you, this is a super video. It all seems so real, done so naturally, or at least it seems. So real to life, don't think it could of been any better.

  • Awesome, could anyone tell me where Marc is now? Wow did seeing this video bring back old mems. What a voice. What a talent. Nashville has certainly forgot where it came from.

  • Mark is now living in Chattanooga,tn. a little suburb called Saint Elmo.just at the foot of lookout mtn. i saw him a few months back at a little restaurant, and spoke to him a few minutes. mark was in the process of writing his autobiography. he is a wonderful person, and i know he would love to read all the good comments on here.

  • I have been trying to find where Mark and Janice have gone since Katrina. They had a house on the beach at that time. I talked to Tommy Jett several months ago and he told me Mark had a stroke. He is doing better now, still writing. He thought they had moved into the Lebanon TN area. When Mark first started out as a solo artist he performed at the Jimmy Rogers festival. I saw him perform again at a Gulf Coast Casino BK (before Katrina). It is just something about that voice that moves you

  • yes, mark suffered a terrible stroke.when i saw him,he looked good and was using the aid of a cain. still looked the same as always.i spoke to a mutual friend not too long ago who knows janice and said mark was learning the piano and doing very well. i would love to see and hear him perform again. i dont know of him moving. havent heard anything, but if i do,i will keep you posted.. good talking to you,and if i see mark,i will ask him if he ever checks this youtube comment site out..

  • Cool beans! Thank you! I would love to be able to send him and Janice a card. Any forwarding address from the coast is long expired.

  • It has been an honor to know and write with Mark he is an awesome guy

  • This is, hands down, the finest country music video ever made. The song, the story, the intro., the music, and even the acting, everything all comes together to achieve perfection in a music video.

  • great songs give you chills everytime you hear them, standing ovation,

  • I never thought I would see this video again. The last time I saw it CMT was call "Country Music Television" and showed nothing but videos. The end, where the girl drops the photos and runs into the sunset, is beautiful.

  • So glad to find this video here. Features a beautiful song I'd never forgotten. Gorgeous.

  • For everyone who thinks that Mark Gray's songs and Mark have been forgotten, think again, look at all the comments that have been received just from this one video of his. Remember, he sang with Tammy Wynette on her album, "Sometimes When We Touch", and who else but Mark sang this song with Tammy. Mark has probably received a good bit of credit during his time, as a singer and a song writer, after all, he has had some of the greatest country singers singing songs that he has written.

  • Listen to his voice..wish he would have put out more songs..some people just dont get credit just like Gary Stewart!

  • are they all guitar instrumentals ?

  • Thank you for the information

  • I have been trying to find my cassette of Mark it is the one where he is sitting at a piano with a white hat on. I have recently moved and don't know where it could be. If someone could just let me know the name of that one so I can purchase another one, I would appreciate it. I am just sorry that he didn't do more.

  • "MAGIC" is the name of the album...

  • I recently went into a convenience store and heard, The Left Side of the Bed, and asked the clerk who was singing the song, of course he said Mark Gray. I hadn't thought about Mark for years and years. I was close to him for a while before he was a teen when his aunt Lorene sang with the Shorty Bradford Trio. I would love to just touch base with him to see an old friend I'm so glad to hear that he is not dead and is doing well. Mark you are missed.

  • great song, love the song, feeling fire from a friend off the album Magic, i wore out 2 of those cassettes, so i had to buy the album off e-bay and have it put on disc

  • No he's not dead.

  • Is Mark Grey dead?? I heard he was dead?? anyone know?? Thanks

  • TommyJay and the Wild West Show;

I knew Mark in Jackson Ms. at George Street Grocery, lost him after about 1991 then found him playing at Copa Casino in Gulfport Ms. Knew him and his brother Charles well. He had his brakes repaired at my Midas Shop in Gulfport and was living on the beach at the time. Haven't seen him since Hurricane Katrina. He is a very talented guy. Thanks for posting this video

  • Wow, I bought one of those huge satellite dishes in 1985 and saw this video on CMT before they scrambled it. I thought it was great then and never thought I would see it again. Thanks so much for the ;post.

  • Mark has a great voice - I heard him on a video with Tammy Wynette and have become one of his fans. Thank you for posting. - Paula

  • He had a hit in early 1986 called 'Baby Please Be Love'. Anyone know where to find it?

  • Mark Gray is a huge talent. I had the pleasure of writing with him at Comanche Studios in Nashville, Tn. Him and his wife are super nice people. If someone out there knows how to contact him, I would love to say hello to him again. I can be contacted through my website at takemetothesea or my youtube site, if you type in Donna Lee Holman it should take you there. I loved seeing this video "Left Side Of The Bed", very nicely done. Thanks to the person who posted it.

  • A... BEAUTY...

  • Everyone who's looking for Mark Gray's music: I just received the first two LP's and CD transfers I had purchased from CDBBQ, and they are fantastic. Magic is still on the way. You have to purchase the LP's to LEGALLY transfer them to a CD format. The quality is excellent, as I paid a premium price for a higher quality transfer. I can only hope Mark has a couple hundred of his old LP's he can sell to this dealer to profit from this! I still miss his talent and wish he would record again.

  • Mark Iloved you as a singer and didn,t know why you stop singing I always loved you.hope you will sing agian.miss your singing.

  • this is a good sad song. wish there were more beautiful songs like this. thanks Mark.

  • Great singer..wish I could find a cd with his song "It aint real, if it aint you"

  • I was a fan of Exile when I was a tween and then of Mark Gray (never made the connection...geez) as a teen. Thought this was one of the best songs ever written. Now I'm a songwriter and have been influenced by him greatly. Thanks for everything Mark!

    Lancelot McGough

  • man what a great song!

  • This video was way ahead of the time it was produced. This is a great song/video, Thanks

  • Thank you so much for clearing up this rumor. I just bought his three LP's and am having them professionally converted over to CD's. If anyone is still looking for Mark Gray's music and having no luck, go to CD BBQ, a great website for locating obscure music. TNnanaof3, please tell Mark Gray a fan in FL is so pleased he's alive and well!!!

  • Flashflood1: Definitely check out the YouTube video by Shawn McDougal (snapwitts also recommended this site). Mark Gray is on piano, and the video was posted in July '08. I sent an inquiry to Shawn McDougal to confirm or hopefully deny of the passing of Mark Gray. What talent that never got the proper attention! Saw him in concert twice and LOVE his three albums!

  • Just wanted to say Mark Gray is alive and well and he and his lovely wife Janice will be at my house for Thanksgiving dinner. Marks' daughter Latoya is married to my son Chris

  • thanks for the info , I was shocked when I read the rumor and am so glad that it was just that , a rumor..Does Mark have an e-mail I would like to write him..I am a friend of his , he sang with my son ( Shawn McDougal) a few times...Thanks , Mike

  • I will be glad to pass this message on to Mark because I do not know his e-mail address or if he even has one yet. His wife Janice fell on Friday night and broke her arm and had to have surgery this morning to put pins and a plate in. I went to visit her this evening and she is doing well, just in alot of pain. I told him about this website and he was going to check it out but then this happened. So I am sure you will be hearing from him as soon as his wife is up and going again

  • Thanks for letting us know that Mark is alive and well, I pray his wife Janice is recovering well from her fall. Blessings to all of you and Merry Christmas.

  • Would you please update us on how Mark and his family is doing. It was nice to hear that he had not passed away. I hope Janice is okay from the surgery. Update, Please.

  • Thanks for the tip - I moved and haven't had access to the internet til now, so I'll check out the Shawn McDougal video next. To the person who's his in-law - PLEASE send Mark our best wishes and tell him to come to YouTube and chat with us. Thanks to all.

  • Oh no! He didn't really die, did he? This makes me very sad. I love his voice and I'm also a huge fan of "It Ain't Real If It Ain't You"and I would love it if someone could post it here. I had the album but haven't heard the song in about 15 years.

PLEASE let it not be true about his death!!! I wish this guy got the recognition he deserved.

  • There is a magician also called Mark Gray.

The one that I am speaking of sang the "Magic Album"

  • Reply to e-mail didn't work.

He passed several years ago. I don't recall how many but quite a few.

Keith was another of Lorrie Morgans trophies . Poor guy darnk himself to death.

I do not know the cause of death of Mark Gray. He sang with the Oakridge Boys. I think they were afraid of his talent.

He also sang with other groups. he started off singing gospel music. Some of it is still around, but I like his country music.

Very sad his music can no longer be found.

    Lee

  • i have several of his records and cassettes (mark gray. For christmas I am going to buy myself the record player that transfers them to CD. I would be willing to make you one

  • I would love that.

I tried to send a message, but don't know if it went through.

    Thanks,

    lee

  • Mark Gray isn't dead , he's alive and well and living in Chatt. with his wife Janice and doing a lot better ..He sang with " Exile" and not the "Oaks"

  • Unfortunately anyone who is asking for more from Mark or Tammy is to late.

They both have gone on to a better place long ago.

"It Aint Real If It Aint You" is maybe my favorite.

Marks "Magic Album" was only on cassette. Maybe vinyl too.

It can't be found. I have been looking to buy it for several years now.

Our cassette is ruined, and not able to play.

The late Keith Whitley is another forgotten singer that has been over looked by the music business. To bad

  • This post of yours if the first I've heard mention of him passing. When did this happen? There is almost no information on him anywhere on the internet. The "Dead Rock Stars Club" makes no mention of it and they usually have info on every musician from every music genre. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

  • I couldn't sleep so I thought I would check out youtube and I am glad I did. Markgrayfan type in the name Shawn McDougal and see his videos, you will find Mark Gray playing the piano in two of them. I understand Mark has had some health problems but as of a few months ago he was still with us and hopefully he is doing better. I was able to find a cassette of his on e-bay. "This Ole' Piano" is probably my favorite. I hope this info helps you michaeleffmeredith.

  • Thanks. It helped A LOT! I am unaware of Mark Gray having been with the Oaks but I do know that Steve Sanders, who briefly replaced William Lee Golden, took his own life in about 1998 or so. I would have thought that "Dead Rock Stars Club" would have posted something about him if he would have died. Thanks a lot.

  • Mark Gray sang with " Exile "

  • This man sure has a thing for hats doesn't he? Ha, Ha, with or without, he can sing and play the piano. Get better Mark, best wishes to you and your family! You are special.

  • Mark Gray, when are you coming back to full public view? You are great, do we have to go to Tennessee to find you? I too, would like to see his other video if anyone can post it.

Thanks for posting this one, it has been some time since I've seen it. Everyone, check out Tammy Wynette and Mark, video "Sometimes When We Touch" it is SUPER!

  • This was directed by Jack Cole, the king of country videos. He also did Reba's "Fancy"

  • Reba's "Fancy" was always one of my favorites.

  • I still think this is the greatest music video of all time. I would love to see Mark perform today. The guitar at the beginning and end is so perfectly haunting and Mark's voice is strong and emotive. Unbelievable stuff. Thriller is 2nd to this any day of the week.

  • AGAIN... WOW!

Nice man and unreal voice & song!

    Freddy Vandiver

  • when this video first came out, I was only 15, i fell in love with it! I have searched for years for this! I almost cryed when I saw it on here! It brings back so many memories! It was the very first music video That I had ever seen! Thank you to whoever put this on here! I just shared it with my Fifteen year old! I love Mark Gray!

  • Wow!

  • Does anyone know where I can buy Mark Gray CD's or if he has a website. I use to listen to his music several years ago,,,and would love to purchase his music.

  • pull up Shawn McDougal and Mark Gray on youtube and you can hear them together doing It ain't real....
