  • 8:41 my mommy <3

  • The final one-hour Disc-O-teen DVD is available for purchase at WNJUTV47.com.

  • What a concept! I wish we had something like this in Australia!

  • My band from New Jersey, Lady and the Tramps, performed on this show! What a blast it was. We won that week and got to come back and perform again. John Zackerley was a hoot, and saw him again 20 years later in NYC. Fun stuff, and great honor to be amongst those that had this great platform to perform! I believe it was 1967.

  • I always liked his beach parties...

  • Comment removed

  • I want it to be 1967.

  • wow, what a rush..this is my generation..I feel like I'm 16 again

  • I can't believe it, my mother is in here dancing when she was younger then me!!! I am 22 now ! This video is awesome thank you for posting it!!! I really can't believe it I get to see a video of my mom from the past... Plaid shirt and ripped jeans dancing back in forth with bleach blonde hair and glasses!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MsGabriella41789 I saw your mom @ 8:41 with the blond hair and tore up jeans. Did your mom talk to Alex or any of the Box tops?

Did your mom know Janet Alfonzo? I think the host had a thing for her. How many times did he kiss her hand? Looks like it was a good time.

  • I had the great fortune of spending the day with Mr Zackerley at the Louisville's zoo a few years ago. He is a great man. He was our first horror host and was a huge hit at one time.

  • Bizarre and fascinating...

  • can you imagine what Lennon or Keef would have done to this twat here,,, what an old pathetic fuckin fag

  • I watch this about once a year what a blast! I wouldn't mind seeing others !

  • Number 1 song for 4 weeks in the usa in 1967

    September 17 – October 14 1967 Box Tops - The Letter

  • Can we get more of this!!???

  • Talk about flashbacks, I use to watch this on Very High Freak TV The round antenna with the snowy pic.

  • Comment removed

  • I was the photographer the camera panned by at 9:20. Still have the slides I took on the show, along with the last show. Zack and the girls were the best. Unfortunately there will probably be another Discoteen. What a great memory that show was.

  • @tigerpilot32 I don't see anyone holding a camera. Is that you carrying the guitar on your back and holding the tambourine?

Did you talk to any of the Box Tops?

Great video, what can you tell us about that night.

  • Read Alex Chilton's lips at 6:16. He didn't seem like he was having a good time doing the show.

  • I want to hear from Janet Alfonso.

I want to know what you thought of the Box Tops on this show were.

It really appeared that Mr. Zacherley had a thing for you. How many times did he kiss your hand? hahahahahahaha Janet Alfonso, ooooooooooooooo managers name, hahahahahahaha well she wrote me a letter and said she couldn't live without me no more. RIP Alex

  • @strebis6 Zacherley loves to kiss the ladies hands! After all, he used to live in Transylvania, where that was common in ancient times... LOL

  • do you have any footage of The Doors whos on the Disc-O-Teen?

  • Seems like every city had their version of a Teen dance show in the 60's.

  • The word ars'ole springs to mind.

  • GREAT STUFF I thought all of zach stuff was lost.....I miss him GREEEEEAAAATTTTT

  • Well she wrote me a letter, said she couldn't live without anymore. Lister mister, can't you see I got to get back to my baby once a more.

ALEX CHILTON IS A COOL DUDE! I LOVE THIS VIDEO! It's funny when Alex's introduces the human queen at 5:55

    RIP Alex

  • Hmm.. if this was filmed in Newark, NJ, I wonder if my mom or my aunts or uncles remember this? They used to live in Newark during this time.

Like Philadelphia had "American Bandstand", "I guess Newark had "Disc-O-Teen". Cool!

  • 6.15 "what the fuck..." i feel for you mate, i do.

  • Chilton's got such laid back style, even at this tender age.

  • I was on this set as a kid in the 60s in Newark,NJ

  • @joebeans1954 What was it like being on that set as a kid.

  • @strebis6 It was a gas man! My schoolmates used to dance on the show, and I would sometimes watch from up above in the monitor room at Symphony Hall in Newark, NJ. And it looked much better live in color, but the two remaining shows are in black and white. In those days, lots of TV stations would reuse their video tapes which were very expensive, so only two shows remain unfortunately.

  • @Yogizuna Were you or your friends on this set? If so which ones are you? This is one of my favorite videos on Youtube. It's great to see how people were back then. What did you think of John Zacherley?Did you know Janet? I just thought maybe she was a regular like you on the show. Thanks for you reply.

  • @strebis6 I was never dancing, because I did not start dancing until after the show ended, but two girls I liked, "Linda P" and "Melinda N" were on the show. Linda looked like Cher, so she would lip synch Sonny and Cher songs with Zach, or the camera would zoom in on her dancing. We used to sit next to each other in school by choice and she was beautiful! Melinda is beautiful also, and when we were young teenagers would play "spin the bottle" with the chicks across the street from her house. :-)

  • I wish Zacherley had been broadcast in Atlanta!

  • The is nobody. NOBODY having this much fun these days. Bummer.

  • @LesbianVampireLover

Thanks to all the uglier and darker sides from that era.

  • OK - I'd never heard this before I jammed on it in a pub...but a contemporary version ca't be a bad thing...see my channel!

  • Excellent! Thanks for posting this. I don't remember being able to receive Zacherley's show in Atlanta way back when but used to always see him in Famous Monsters magazine and wondered what the deal was with him. This show must have been a good break from Bandstand.

And before I forget, R.I.P. Alex Chilton, lead singer of The Box Tops, who died March 17th, 2010.

  • My Band, The Lost Souls appeared in "66' ,I think. Thanks for posting this. It brings back some grerat memories

  • man those girls are hott, like super hott

  • the girl at the beginning of the song can move and the one at 1.46'1.47 dressed as the belly dancer.

  • my mother was on this show! trying to find an episode of when john zacherley flirted with her and embarrassed her on camera!! LMAO he ended up giving her aroudn 10 tickets to come back! my mom was hot stuff back then!!! ;)

  • The host is a jerk. Not funny at all. I agree that Alex looks embarrassed to be there.

  • amazing i love zacherle

  • Well yeah i can only imagine how sharp Zacherley must be. He has such a smooth wit to him. For this type of tely he truly makes this show so interesting to watch. As for my mom, she vividly remembers being on this show. Her description of the events were very funny and quite interesting. Going on the show was kind of a last minute thing for her because one of her friends had an extra ticket but since another friend couldnt make it, my mom was offered and thus accepted the invite. Pretty cool.

  • Zacherley is the best....Although the show seemed a bit awkward, with him attempting to keep teen aged kids interested....He did a good job....Boxtops were talented.

  • I wish Alex would have punched that idiot host.

  • WHAT is that song snippet at between 8:00 and 8:12 - it is outstanding...

  • I think it's the Four Tops' "You Keep Running Away"

  • Comment removed

  • Too much..This is priceless...

  • Rest in Peace Alex!

  • I was mourning the loss of Alex Chilton tonight and stumbled on this wonderful video. This is GREAT STUFF. Thank you to whomever posted it. Too bad there aren't more surviving episodes. Some talented dancers, and the camera moves are pretty good for that time period. Not too shabby for a small UHF station in Jersey.

  • Just too funny, cool, good to watch! Makes memories fly! LOL Pure genius Zac! A man well ahead of his time. Definitely the original 'Shock Jock'. Love this!

    RIP Alex...You're 'home' now.

  • RIP Alex Chilton

  • @briva Want to hear something fucked up? Alex didn't go to the hospital even though he wasn't feeling well because he didn't have health insurance. Fuck the US and their retarded policies.

  • @johnjohnmajortom Yes, that is totally fucked-up. And illegal aliens will get free health care, but people like Alex will continue to drop dead without it.

  • @briva

If I had a dime for all the idiot comments on here I'd be rich. Go wave your Tea Party flag with your bullshit about illegal aliens, dumb ass.

  • @RTT8001 I don't need you or any radical political group to exercise common sense. Nothing in life is free. I'm part of the working poor. My point was that if Alex was an illegal alien, he would have been able to "afford' health care. The same has been true for welfare recipients for four generations. Personally, I'm tired of being everyone else's slave.

  • @briva Exactly!

  • @briva Its sad when simple humantiarian aid can be labled as "radical". USA is ment to be a 1st world state yet its health care is 3rd world.

  • @RTT8001 alex lived by the treme section of new orleans

which is populated by majority groups,it seems that the 911 call was ignored

probably because of the"ghetto' adress ,alex loved just about everybody,

and he loved life with a passionate intensity rarely seen,he was also a dedicated

socialist, and would have been sickened by the zenophobic spewings ifound here.

  • OMG Zacherle is so stoned!

  • R.I. P. Alex....Only 59 years old.

  • GREAT video! BRAVO to everyone involved! Ever since I saw this video two years ago, I always thought it'd be great if Zacherley and the Box Tops got together again somehow - but that can't happen now...RIP Alex Chilton

  • girls back in the 60`s look hott and i wonder what jim morriosn had done on this ghow lol.Anyone agree that this show has some hott lookin girls

  • also htat one girl look kinda disguted when the creepy host ask the guy with the glasses on to kiss her hand and her friend were like laugin and the host was kinda high also or on something due to him acting weird thoughtout the entire program

  • Hope Zacherle, The Box Tops, and everyone else in this amazing vid is doing great nowadays. And a bit of irony, my dad's name is 'Gary'!!! I don't think my father is Gary Top though LoL! Anyway, my dad thinks he's David Bowie, so i'm not so sure LoL. Have a great day everyone and thanks so much for putting this video here!!! Great song btw!

  • If John Zacherle is such a great guy, then why is he hitting on my 15 year old mom (Janis)??? Haha LoL just goofing! Actually, i love this older style of Television Show, it's so refreshing, and do think John Zacherle is a wonderful guy! My mom really is Janis Alfonso and i'm sure she had a blast giving everyone a difficult time off-camera LoL. It's cool to see everyone in this video because they were all so young. It's kind of weird for me because i wasn't even born yet.

  • Wow, how cool for your mom that this is on youtube...does she remember attending that show?

  • I've been friends with John Zacherle for many years and he is a wonderful man. I am an artist and a few years ago created a collage based on his famous "Cool Ghoul" photo portrait. My girlfriend Francine & I recently had brunch with him in NYC and took some nice photographs. If any Zacherle fans would like to view these images go to the "Photo Section" of "The UFO Roundtable" on "Meetup" then click "Interesting Photographs 2010. Enjoy.

  • Zach is one of the brightest, and nicest gents ever in show business...I met him briefly a few years ago....he was genuinely interested in what I had to say...a great guy and sharp as a whip at 91.

  • Comment removed

  • Zacherle is great !

  • I danced on this show in 1965 with a girl named Wendy

  • I was one of the dancers on the show too. I still dance just as goofy too. I remember Barry Landers who produced the show too. I love how low budget it was.

  • As vulgar as dancing is today, it's no where near as dangerous as these moves.

  • Thanks for posting this. I hope more can be found. I danced on the show a few times and got autographs from Zach and from Keith (Hey 98.6)

  • Am wondering "WHY" was'nt this fantastic dance show aired nationally instead of just a regional show? John Zacherle is an awesome and very likeable host! Thank you for posting this GROOVY video!!

  • Zacherle"s show was the coolest show in the 60's. Way ahead of its time. A ton of imitators followed! Glad I grew up in the New York area. So many memories!

  • Yep, my mom is that fancy dancer... haha... She still dances just as goofy, still looks just as pretty, still plays with her hair when deep in thought or caught with fraught when smitten by stage fright, but, as for still being so shy... not so shy anymore, especially when she yells at me. LoL! Btw, very nice classic tely vid, great find! EjGerbino.

  • My mom is Janis Alfonso (originally from Saddle Brook, NJ), the 'shy' girl in this video who wins the magnificent 'creature queen' award. Very big award, considering that pumpkin must've weighed about a thousand stones! Halloween has always been a family fave, so now i know why! EjGerbino.

  • Love this Box Tops do Zacherley's Disc-O-Teen. Real live 60's TV.

  • Yay

  • chilton pushing him even further down at 7:45 is priceless.

  • my favorite part too -- I was thinking I bet he wished he could kick him by that point -- what a wanker that host was!

  • Anyone get the impression Alex Chilton doesn't want to be there.

  • @neonatalpenguin

believe it or not he looks far more happy to be there than he does in most of his other videos!

  • @neonatalpenguin Yeah. I couldn't understand why he was reluctant to kiss the girl's hand.

  • @neonatalpenguin I get the impression that none of them wants to be there.

  • @neonatalpenguin did anybody want to be there?

  • @neonatalpenguin

Actually, I get the impression that the host doesn't realize Alex is the lead singer . .. and also I get the impression that Alex is trying to make a date with that pretty brunette girl!

  • The Original Dr. Shock!! I love it!!

  • he looks like herman munster

  • HEes just getting handkissing for everyone isn't he lol.

  • Thanks for posting this example of a local show. It can not be duplicated so I am amused and pleased that it got saved. It serves 60's history to have it here at YouTube.

Still I cannot believe I watched the whole thing.

We had Rick Shaw who did a variety of different TV shows in the 60's including an early morning one with early music videos as well as was the ruling DJ at 560 WQAM.

Would love to see a good or mediocre one with our Rick Shaw. Where did you get this well-taped one?

  • I watched this show on UHF as a kid in the NYC area. The reception was terrible (snowy) but I loved it none the less. who dug up this clip?

  • We couldn't even get "snow" up in Yonkers...! On Zach's Dance show, but O remember all the "Shock Theater " stuff in '58 & '59.

  • My friends and I were in the band called the Broken Bones. We actually played live on this show twice in 1965. Zacherley made me make faces as the camera got closer and closer to my face. All of a sudden Nowhere Man by the Beatles started playing. Zach is a wild and crazy ghoul. I wish those clips still existed.

  • Is there anyway that i can hear your old band?

  • After Zacharley, we played on the Chuck McCann Show at WNEW Ch 5 NYC. It was videotaped. It was 1965. I have been trying to obtain a copy of it. I was told by Iron Mt. storage facility, that I have to know who produced it to gain access. They might have it. Chuck doesn't recall who produced the show. This is the only performance that may still exist. If you can help let me know. Thanks

  • I LOVE the dance style!

  • MAN what a COOL video...those were the days!

  • John Zacherly, the cool ghoul- he hosted a kid monster movie fest on Philly TV for years.

  • Really? Is this Dr. Schock?!

  • There is ONE OTHER show of Disc-O-Teen that was saved, and no one has posted it to you tube yet!

Someone save us! Post it please!

  • What a great clip of the Box Tops on a tv show in the 60s! They were just being themselves on a New Jersey Halloween party. Thanks for a slice of 60s silliness! Ron

  • damn i wish people still danced like this

  • me too! because it was fun!

  • This was shot down in Newark NJ at the old Mosque Theater. It was shown on channel 47. We'd stick around after the show, and although you can't see it, there was a professional boxing ring in the background, and we'd see the follow up wrestling show. I still have some old photos and ticket stubs.

  • any chance ANY more of these just might be stored in someones basement; I've otherwise but---------?

  • LOL! 5:12 "Let's talk down here so they can just see the top of your head." And then he does it! This is great.

  • Back when music was fun.....

  • I keep coming back to this clip love it ! thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • When this aired, I was probably around the same age as that little kid at 2:48 in the Dumbo costume. It's so much more fun watching clips from these crude local shows than it is clips from Shindig and Hullabaloo. Everything is just so...so...unrehearsed!

  • This is why I love the 60s so kick ass.

  • crazy 60es

    very nice

  • Thanks so much for this video! God I loved the sixties! :->

  • That zacherly dude is really creepy and I don't mean in a scarery way. I mean in a really creepy way!

  • wHAT'S WITH THE CHICKEN NOISES?

  • Mike Myers at 2:30...

  • The chick in the witches hat dances well.....

  • What was Zacharley smoking?

  • And of course, after "Disc-O-Teen" ended, WNJU moved more towards becoming a Spanish-language outlet. As to the cameras used on the program, they were RCA TK-60's.

  • *sigh* I wish I had grown up in his era so I could have seen more of him.

Thanks so much for this video! You gave me and my parents a treat!

  • Yes I know it's Zacherly, but Zachery is what I called him. I was just a kid after all. ;) Very cool video.

  • OMG it's Zachary! I remember watching him on the tv. Geez, now I really feel older than dirt. Great video!

  • What an incredible find -- and the tape is in such great shape after 41 years! "The Letter" was The Box Tops' first of ten hits and reached #1 in the fall of 1967. Amazingly, after it, the group members were not allowed by their label to play on their hits! On disc, they were replaced in the studio by session musicians! Only lead singer Alex Chilton actually performed on "Cry Like A Baby," "Soul Deep" or the other Box Tops classics. As for Zach, his "Dinner With Drac" reached #6 in 1958.

  • Supposedly there is ONE MORE disco-teen that was preserved, but no one has posted it yet!

  • So great

  • The host is a zombie man! Get it off me!

  • I love Zach!! It's amazing to see this footage from the 60's ... hard to realize that Zach was in his 40's!! Of course, he's 90 years old now and he still looks "young".

    Elaine

  • Wow! This brings back memories! I was the drummer in "The Coachmen." We won a band contest on Disco Teen. The prize: We opened for The Rolling Stones at Symphony Hall in Newark, NJ! I was like 15 years old!! The kids in the audience knew us from the show and screamed and asked for autographs! I remember Zacherley back stage as a consummate gentleman. Thanks, Zacherley, for the thrill of a lifetime!

  • serious, Mr. Moon coachmen?

  • hahaha this is so priceless, and you know they say our generation dances all crazy xd haha

  • Do you have the clip of the one where he sings "I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher and he plays Sonny and girl on the show plays Cher?

  • history all mine to remember my teenage years ,nothing compares there after

  • i love it

  • far out!

  • danny boxtop was a great drummer!! IMHO!! ;-)

  • WOW!!!

    What a treat!

    Zacherley AND the Box Tops!!!

    Awesome,thanks

  • Give me a ticket for an aeroplane

Ain't got time to take a fast train

Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home

Cause my baby just wrote me a letter

    great awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    i love that

  • This is so cool, the dancing is to cool also,i love it.

  • Just about anybody can do what

Zach is doing there, only a few dozen humans

in history can do what Chilton is doing vocally on "The Letter".

  • Oh please. Zach is the man.

  • zach is great as usual, alex chilton is an ass as usual. the beatles taught every little band in the 60's how to be be rude regardless of position but hey, that's proto- punk, right, alex?

  • I really don't think Chilton and the

group were rude at ALL here, they

were very tolerant of the silly stuff, which

got more annoying than funny after awhile.

Ask them a REAL question for Chrissakes.

  • This is hilarious! The music and the dancing are as I remember them in High School -- Super! I love it!!

  • The host certainly appears to be

    a championship level horse's flank, but I

guess that was his schtick. Alex and the boys look

amused for awhile, then they get a little

    weary of his act, imo.

  • Ok...these are all chicks dancing together. Was this an underground lesbian dance show or what?

  • Those were more innocent times. Silly.

  • This fuckin' host is a straight twerp

  • OMG! I remember dancing like this!! This guy Zach you speak of...so funny! This was great!

  • I recently talked to Zach on his Sat morning radio show.He is alive and doing well when i talked to him about a year ago.he told me he as only one show on tape he saved , the last one.Anyone have any others secorded?

  • What station is Zach on? What time? What state?

    Thank you!
