In the five 1v1 of this video, Maldini commits 4 faults. In most of them Overmars was going easily thru him. Great defender, but he could not stop Overmars in a fair way.
Maldini had great positioning. He wasnt the fastest and wasnt explosive. But at that point where most players are leaving the defender behind Maldini would just move in front of them hence not committing foul and keeping the player from passing. Some defenders think that as long as there's no card and the foul is committed away from danger but on a potentially dangerous situation if the attacker passes, they win.

Well considering overmars is meant to be one of the best, fact is, maldini had him in check, better player would have brushed of maldini, or simply out sprinted//dribble him come on, messi = short, bla bla he would have shown much more resistant to maldini, and would have used his clever quick thinking to turn, under cut or go past maldini for definate, that's taking nothing away from maldini, but a few players a little after him would burned maldini, c ronaldo, RONALDO, ronaldinho, henry...!!

Second of all Maldini shows in this video how amazing his marking is, I doubt any player could play their usual game when being marked like that. Players you listed have only played against the 30 plus year old Maldini, Seriously I think Overmars did good with such a good defender marking him and he actually owned Maldini at least once

In the five 1v1 of this video, Maldini commits 4 faults. In most of them Overmars was going easily thru him. Great defender, but he could not stop Overmars in a fair way.

Maldini had great positioning. He wasnt the fastest and wasnt explosive. But at that point where most players are leaving the defender behind Maldini would just move in front of them hence not committing foul and keeping the player from passing. Some defenders think that as long as there's no card and the foul is committed away from danger but on a potentially dangerous situation if the attacker passes, they win.

omg at the charity match situation.... overmars is quick, but if u watch the video without biase its clear that overmars was a handful for paolo, but he was contained, he didnt let him progress, thats a defenders job...as a defender myself i say he did his job well..dont get me wrong overmars was a handful... but he was pounced on at every chance by il capitano.

From what i saw maldini should have been sent off. at least 2 chellenges were yellow cards (the one where overmars back heels hit and he just wipes him out is a definate yellow) and then maldini should have been sent off for persistent fouling. Overmars had the better of maldini because of his pace, maldini couldnt handle it so could only foul him

And i cant recall any Defender that was so inspiring to watch except for Baresi. (like looking at Messi how he plays today) Wich are the most rare attribute for a Defender.

Maldini and puyol were slightly similar or at least whenever they met someone quicker than them they seemed to use the same tactic of kicking them and the referees left them do it without booking them,maldini should had been sent off in this game for the numbers of bad fouls he committed on marc.
Maldini was always a better centre back than left back but couldn't play there because of baresi and costacurta,to me ashley cole is a much better left back than maldini ever was.
