all the charges were dropped, BECAUSE I WAS NOT SPEEDING. We asked for the dashcam video via FOIFA, but the DA Nora Miller came to the courthouse while I was making copies of ALL the normally impossible to refute 'pacing tickets', and dropped the case, completely.
The city at that time made ALOT of money off pacing tickets, although every cruiser had other ways to verify speed.
My camera, and quick thinking that night, were all that made this false charge fightable.
Go to your search engine and enter accidents on us 58 in emporia. This is why Emporia ENFORCES the speed limit, look at the deaths along the stretch between southampton and mecklenburg counties. The speed limit is clearly visible when you enter the city limits. So next time you get pulled instead of getting angry at the officer for costing you a few bills, thank him for possibly saving your life.
I've been traveling through 58 to get to Fayetteville, NC since 1994. It is about time that someone take the time to see what is going on with these cops. Specially the huge revenue they are generating!!!
I need help on a video in a Burger King Parking lot off of highway 58 100 Market Drive Emporia, VA 23847-0000 on Oct 21, 2011 approximately 830 and 9 pm with police brutality on a mother and her daughters with 3 children. Please help by emailing to mostwantedmngt@gmail.com
I forgot to include in my recent response, I was a victim of the Emporia "Speed Trap" ... my response will be to not spend any money along Route 58 (especially Emporia, South Hill & Lacrosse). It may hurt the retailers, but then maybe they will let their voice be heard.
You can ADD me to your list of "speed trap" victims. I was with other vehicles & did not think I was speeding. I saw the blue light behind me & pulled over to let the police go by. When he pulled behind me, I actually thought I must have a tail light/brake light out.
When he returned to me with a 60 in a 45, I was shocked. I "assumed" he had radar and had to pick one vehicle, so he picked me.
Anyway, you are right ... I will pay no matter what, even to prove I am not guilty.
I spend time at Northbend park and pass through LaCrosse often. The police have a cruiser parked on the north side of 58 every day just outside South Hill in LaCrosse. It is pure and simple, a money grab. They do use radar, but it is so obviously used to fill the LaCrosse coffers, that it is almost criminal. This is a short stretch of highway 58 where a car is slowing down while entering traffic in South Hill, and if speeding at all, not by very much. A speed trap if I ever saw one.
@elon3835: infact, as I get more & more frustrated. I think I will videotape every-time I make the trip on 58 now. It is true. There is no way to prove you did nothing wrong when it is your word against the officers. I got a ticket dropped here for improper equipment that I fraught myself. It still cost me $200, a day's drive, & a off work.
I just a ticket here a couple weeks ago. I'm 19 and it was my first speeding ticket and since my car when in the shop I had to use my mom's. I wasn't used to the car and the cop still gave me a ticket. Now I have to go to court out of state and deal with the fines.
They sit there at goodwill across from Clayton homes all day waiting to drill somebody I used to work for Clayton n have watched them do this 3 dayz in a row ALL DAY LONG
I've been on this road many times and what you said is so true. The little towns earn a large portion of their revenue from tickets. Apparently the qualifications to be a cop in these towns is to be somebody's brother-in-law because what they get away with clearly demonstrates their interest has nothing to do with safety.
2. Did you know in the State of Virginia, it is illegal to using ANY electronic device while driving, not just a cellphone. So that in and of itself, you are breaking the law.
I am just wondering what your definition of speed trap is? The speeds in and around the area you are describing are clearly posted. I have traveled on Hwy 58 from Norfolk to the Blue Ridge Parkway on this highway and have never received a ticket. As long as you are driving the speed limit or within 5 or 6 miles of it, you will not be hit with a ticket. I have talked to police officers who say that a defendent can request to see the calibration of their speed detection equipment at any time.
My son was coming back home from Camp LeJeune several years back and was stopped in Johnston County just south of Raleigh for doing 80-85 mph in a 70 mph zone. So, after about a week or two; letters from attorneys started pouring in soliciting their service. I contacted several and all of them said they could get it reduced to a non-moving violation. Well, after the trial date and $250 later the attorney's office sent a letter stating what he had told me, and our insurance company never knew!
They lie in wait for military coming from Norfolk all the time. They really hate the military because they are young and don't know much about speed traps. They sit and wait in the rolling hills there just waiting for people and don't fight crime or anything else. And one of my Navy buds got a ticket there for going 2 miles over the speed limit.
The La Crosse police are always coming over to South Hill, waiting on the side of the road, trying to pull people over. I've seen 'em every time I head to Walmart. The South Hill chief of police has argued with the La Crosse chief about the issue a few times before, because, for one thing, it's not even in their jurisdiction.
I drive 58 every day and anywhere between Franklin and South Hill, we are all at risk of being stopped for the slightest infraction. It's a Golden Goose for these tiny towns and counties who have a small tax base for revenue. Traffic tickets are big money. The Chesapeake Expressway is horrible too. Truth is, corruption is rampant, but at least the cop in this video was nice. Wonder how his chief liked all the profanity.

1. Speed trap- What is your definition.

@daba13ref Totally not true. Radar locators are illegal but cell phones are legal except for texting and other electronics are perfectly legal.
