@PeterEvolves For me they are unquestionably two of the finest orchestral compositions of all time - Mahler seems to be all the fashion these days but his music comes nowhere near the greatness of Sibelius in my opinion.
@berrik500 - which year would this DG recording (Järvi & BP) be from? Catalogue number? I'm still intrigued since I have the 1995 DG version (not the earlier one on BIS!) with Järvi and the Gothenburg SO - and it sounds exactly the same as the one in this video. Plus the DG site does not seem to include any info of recordings by Järvi and BP... nor can I find info on such a recording elsewhere, not even on the conductor's own website's discography! (i'm just curious to locate the BP version)
...actually, I just listened to this video and my CD (of Gothenburg SO w/ Neeme Järvi), comparing the two audio sources in sync (alternating between sources) - it's a perfect 100% match from start to finish. This would not be possible, not even by sheer luck, unless it were the very same recording -> this IS without a doubt the Göteborgs Symfoniker under the baton of Neeme Järvi playing in the video. Unless the DG Trio 3CD "Sibelius Tone Poems" set has a massive misprint on the cover :)
@Rubycon75 You're right: The DGG recording you mean is with the gothenburg SO. But I took it from an older 1-disc album and now I'm in doubt if it was with the BPO. I''d hired this CD from a central music point years ago. Now I think that I shall make it correct... THanks.
It's a wonderful piece of music and a wonderful performance... but isn't this by Neeme Järvi and the (Swedish) Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, not the BP? (Not that it really matters too much as such, but if someone wants to do the decent thing and actually buy the record...)
The dark brother of the Seventh Symphony.

This and the Seventh Symphony are probably my two favorite pieces of orchestral music ever. Amazing. Just amazing.

Tapiola means the home of Tapio: the forest god. This is nature singing, revealing itself.
