This was the first Tull concert i went to, and it was great! Nothing like it, floor seats, 23 third row, don't remember if i even sat down. The show was phenomenmal. Watching this video brought back alot of good memories.
My god.. that honestly blew me away. I liked bits of Aqualung when i was a (very young) child. But this performance would blow any "modern" band out of the water. Just the diversity, the effort and the heart put into it all. Never-mind the musicality of it all. Brilliant. Where have bands like this gone?

Not complete but one of the longest versions recorded live...the 78 MSG show was a great time for Tull live. Had the best lineup still, unfortunately John Glascock would soon leave this world and Tull would lose Palmer, Evans and Barlow also. Just was never the same after...
This is awesome, it really takes me back. I haven't gone back to read all the comments so maybe someone has already mentioned that this is the version on the Live Bursting Out album. Do yourself a favour and check it out!
@dsledge123 Nope. This is the New York City show with Antony Williams playing bass guitar instead of John Glasscock, who is the bassist featured on "Bursting Out"- which was recorded on the same (1978) tour of Europe. Actually, the sound quality here is significantly better, as it was captured "pro", and "Bursting Out" was recorded on a tiny 8 track tape machine...
Jethro Tull has, is and will always be one of the Greatest Rock Bands to have ever traveresed the earth. Been my AllTime Favourite Band. One of the fortunates to have met him on a one on one in Bombay, India. Still relish every moment of all the 6 concerts I've seen them perform in India. Long Live Tull music! Long Live Anderson!!
I've found the poet and the painter are frequently if the same, mind as the soldier, I love Ian and believe we should always question our "betters" . For often, they're not,
A crouched over flautist standing at the microphone like a stork with left leg held up bent in front......what else matches that as a true iconic vision.
A true light in the world of music -- rock or otherwise. This one is better than Quadrophenia and Pinball Wizard, each. Ian and Martin can't be touched, in terms of the lyrics, the drama, the stage presence, the audacity to challenge youth... Martin ROCKS on Brick. I wish I would not have allowed the ex to make me sell THREE copies of this one album, saying nothing of every other album they made... Ben...THANKS !!!!!!!! Tull was my teen age years. How I miss that great music...
I totally agree with scipfish. Barriemore Barlow is one of the best drummers there is. His interpretation of what he needed to play on this classic Ian Anderson songThick as a Brick was in my opinion, perfection. He also flawlessly performed it.Hi s single stroke rolls are perfect. Single stroke rolls are difficult to play perfectly and consistently, he holds nothing back and nails it. We all rave and faun all over Neil Peart and Carl Palmer, rightly so. Barrie plays his heart out here. Tops !
@crambone20002000 I agree with you. Barriemore Barlow is great, one of the best drummers. I hate compare Barriemore Barlow with Neil Pearl. I think Barriemore Barlow is better, but both are great certainly.
It's funny, when I was young in the '60s & '70s I was more into classical music, but as I am now firmly into what we euphemistically call middle age, I find myself drawn to the 'classics' of my youth, and this is one!
I grew up with this and always liked Tull, but imagine my delight to re-discover them and love their music even more now!!! The sign of true musical genius, standing the test of time, nay, getting better with age! Long live Ian and the music of Jethro Tull! I thank the universe I was born in the 60's, grew up in the 70's and 80's and I really do feel for the kids today who are being cheated, grossly, by today's over-rated, under-talented pawns of the music BUSINESS!

Unbelievable!! awesome video/great arrangement...Watched 40th anniversary tour last year: they still sound every bit as good as they do here..They had Barriemore AND Clive Bunker playing and IAN Anderson was amazing--great Flautist, the sounds so unique...5/5!!!
First time I saw Tull was on their 30th Anniversary tour. Yes, that was ten years ago. They were AWESOME! Happy birthday to Ian! ya know, he turned 62 a couple of days ago, but you're never too old to Rock & Roll, if you're too young to die. Remember that stretch54... and yes I'm jealous of you for being 'round back then.
man... that flute should have explode on audiences face... wish i was older at the time and was on that country and have the money to be there... maybe too many wishes,... but even so... what a performer... no one even closer this days....
With them I lost my head !!! in the 70`s had all his vinyl albuns! Now i have them all in cd!!!!!!!! Jethro Tull rules and Ian Anderson is much more than very cool!
Don't know what year it was in the early `70's, but I saw Tull live when the roadies all wore tan long coats and berets setting up the stage after the opening act. You could see Ian and Martin among them after a short time and soon the only ones left on stage were the guys in the band and they started playing. That was memorable even though I can't remember more than that (you had to be there :-). It was a good show though, remember that also.
Every time I hear this song I think to myself "I was born twenty years later than I should've been." God, I'd have love'd to have been around for the seventies. The timelessness of the music is not something that you see in later decades....
Not that Tull didn't kick ass in 2004 when I saw them play, but I feel like this would have been a better experience....AWESOME
I was 17 years old when Thick As A Brick came out and I can tell you that it was a great time for music. I feel lucky to have been around in the 60's and 70's to experience the times first hand.
Other than that, getting old pretty much sucks...LOL
Ian the ever erstwhile prankster had the stage crew where London Fog type trench coats and hats.. If memeory serves me well they were in tan one's... as they set about getting the stage all set up .. strange thing occurred.. all those left on stage were wearing black.
All of a sudden..coats and hats came off and Ian stated something to the effect "if you have to go to the bahtroom you'd better go now"
They never played the complete album live, did they? Even on their '72 tour, I think they just stretched the first half to 40+ minutes. It'd be quite a challenge to perform the second half, thats for sure.
though it's greate to see this, but it isn't Thck as a Brick complete; it's a live version of either edit 4 or 7 -- essentially one of the thick as a brick "singles"
This is what MUSIC used to be; true art and actual results of hard work. Now it's just Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Pussycat dolls repeating three to four words and - to keep the interest of the viewers - dancing, wearing nothing but bras and panties. Do they complain? Of course not, they've raped the meaning of music but what does it mean when you get millions for doing it.
yes but kurt cobain's best song was smell like a teen spirit, the jethro tull's one was...MY GOD that rebel against all the english society and was censured...this is rebellion, not going round only with bras and pants....this was his way to attract people's opinion about him, not to attract powrful people's opinion...
@bukovoima There are still artists that rely on hard work-- there were artists that were superficial and silly in the seventies, the sixties, the fifties, the twenties, and the renaissance times as well... nothing really changes that much.
@bukovoima I agree. It amazes me that people like Rihanna and Lady Gaga (et al) can make the crap that they do, with their "music" coming looped out of a computer and their "voices" coming through an auto-tuner--and still call themselves "musicians".
@bukovoima there's is a LOT of music being created, produced and played today, as good as this (which is great). The difference is, Jethro Tull was mainstream, he was the public's idol back then. Nowadays, when everybody can and does publish music, people identify themselves with what they can easily play or sing, whthout being a "musician".
God bless you for worshipping this, instead of bras and panties ;)
I sometimes think how its possible to contimplate the fact that we can imagion the size of an atom, the immensness of black holes, the idea of dying for ones country, the gift of life, and that I missed seeing these guys live. Jethro Tull is the best, all of them, I dont know that we will ever see the likes of them again. JT you rock, forever.
Thank you Ben for this great footage.I was lucky enough to have seen Tull dozens of times in the early 70's and watching this again reminded me how great the band was with Barriemore and John Evans still in it.
Jethro Tull became the first rock group to appear live from America on British TV.
Fire crackers and steel bolts nearly aborted an historic satellite broadcast. On Sunday night a lunatic minority pelted Ian Anderson with missiles during Jethro Tull's opening night at Madison Square Garden in New York. Anderson came off stage in a black rage and threatened to pull out of the transatlantic TV hook-up, ignoring the elaborate preparations and publicity build-up.

Barriemore Barlow is one of the greatest drummers in the history of modern drummers. His playing 30+ years ago is literally mind boggling.

Agreed. He has to be one of the most under-rated drummers of all time.
