I got the European version of the game as a rom (Being from Scotland I grew up with the slower-paced European Sonic soundtracks) and although I also have Gems Collection on Gamecube I only played Palmtree Panic.

In fact, the only US track I remember is "Sonic Boom" and that's only because the opening/ending is on Sonic Mega Collection (God I love Toei Animation's... well, animation style); anyway, it's nice to hear the other soundtrack.

The American Palmtree Panic tracks do have that tropical feel to it. It doesn't mean that the Japanese is bad either. They're both good soundtracks.

By the way, I do pretty much agree with you about the soundtracks. Neither one is bad. I don't think they measure up to the Genesis games' soundtracks, but they're good. Collission Chaos is a GREAT work of music in the American version.

That said, this is my least favorite of the original 2D Sonic games. Level design is odd, the music in both versions is neither as catchy nor as good as the music in the Genesis games, and overall, the atmosphere is completely different, in a bad way.

Oddly, Sonic CD kind of creeps me out. I have no idea why, I just find it consistently unsettling.

My favourite Sonic game on the Genesis is Sonic 3 & Knuckles, even though Sonic 2 was my first video game. Sonic 2 comes 2nd.
