If I used a thin metal shield, would it hold up as proper protection to a swing from this? I have to have a fight scene for a play, and i've been looking around at some prop weapons.
It would also be helpful to compact tissue paper into the spikes so they don't dent. if you're going for realism you should have left the handle wooden and painted the ball and chain silver.
Please could you add video with this morningstar flail in action i dont trust int plastic chain it suits for american larp but could it stands in european larp? i ve seen some plastic chains on it but it hasnt hold for too long maybe half of battle :-) or have you some technic how to make it to hold
This flail is reasonably durable but isn't made for Larping, The chain would probably hold up pretty well but the spiked ball would wear out pretty quickly.
Metals my favourite medium to work with. Have you considered working with metal? It's infact fairly easy to make battle axes, and Uruk'hai swords. I've just finished making the battle axe that kills Draco in Dragonheart, any fantasy lover like you and I should know what Dragonheart is lol
P.S. Read your books and they are amazing! You and someone called Claudio Sanchez have inspired me to write and draw, thanks Will!
Thanks for checking out my channel! I know a bit about metals but have never worked with them. I tend to keep it simple so others can do it too. What kind of metals do you work with? Do you have a forge? I will probably be getting a forge so I can make swords, will be a lot of fun.
@epicfantasy yeah I've got a forge and stuff. But I prefer to keep my metal work simple, I've got a style. If it's not big and brutal, it's not mine lol. For my battle axes, I get a piece of fairly thick sheet metal cut out the shape of my battle axe, and grind down the edges to make them sharp, then usually spray up the battle axe and wrap leather around the handle and such. But I also really like making warhammers too
Nice video. Basic and simple. I can make one of those fairly cheap for my halloween character instead of buying a fancy real one. Thanks for the tips.
nice, would be better if the ball and chain were metal though, im sure that would do more damage when i go with my plan to smash someone on the head with it (its a joke lol but will hurt them!!!1)
Thats a really good idea. I was just recently looking at some tiki torches which cost about 5 bucks and I thought that the bamboo staff would be great as a handle for a polearm or pole weapon.
no problem. I have actually owned a really neat staff where they took a bamboo tiki torch bottom, cleared out a hole in the top and placed an inverted Christmas tree globe in it. Makes a really cool fantasy staff. (The one these had actually were clear and opened and shut.)
You might even be able to make some sort of item using a real stick, if you have wood near by.
Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking! A wizards staff from a tiki torch. Must be pretty cool looking!! Anyhoo, I have got to do something like that. I have done a couple of nice shields. Video id: MaSUSOH6mAY
But I have been thinking I might do a really nice spartan shield, it will be a bit complicated because of the unique shape of the shield, I might do a tutorial on it anyway. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it :)
some website stole this vid and charges $1 to watch the video... LAME

@beatlesfan831 Yes, I think it would hold up against this medieval flail.

Have you thought about doing a staff weapon, like a glaive or a spear? I think that would be pretty neat.
