"That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." (John 17:9-21)
The devils revealed to Francis of Yepes, the brother of St. John of the Cross that three things especially tormented them. The first is the NAME OF JESUS; the second, the NAME OF MARY; and third, THE BROWN SCAPULAR OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL. "Take off that habit," they cried to him, "which snatches too many souls from us. All those clothed in it die piously and escape us."
This is a BEAUTIFUL video. I love the song too. I am Roman Catholic, and have a feeling that the Holy Spirit is calling me to read the Bible. I haven't read the whole Bible before, maybe this is why.
Once Jesus reached adulthood, she played no influential part in His earthly service. Her last words are recorded in the Bible. Fittingly, she tells the servants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5). She also reinforces "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30), Mary faded into the background. There is no doubt that she is exemplary among biblical saints as a model of obedience and submission to the will of God but even she tells us Jesus is the ONLY way to your salvation!
Mary as a wonderfully humble servant of the Lord who rejoices in Him as her Savior (Luke 1:47 - "And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior"). Obviously her heart was not immaculate nor was she conceived without sin because her Son, her Savior, came not for the sinless but "to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). Therefore Mary can be described as someone who was in need of a savior - just like you and I.
Actually the rosary is believed to have been developed in the 9th century. Irish monks would recite and chant the 150 Psalms of the Bible as a major part of their worship. People were drawn towards this harmonious devotion, and they wanted to join in with the monks' prayers. Sadly, most were illiterate. It was suggested to the people that they recite a series of 150 "Our Father" prayers in place of the psalms.
Ok after some research & script matching via History both you & I were wrong lol. In the 7th century, Saint Eligius wrote of using a counting device to keep track of the 150 Hail Marys of the Psalter of Mary. In the 12th century, the rule of the English anchorites, the Ancrene Wisse, specified how groups of 50 Hail Marys were to be broken into five decades of ten Hail Marys each.
Sandor, you're correct in that 'where the rosary came from' there is no exact time and place. Very few people were literate up until the invention of the printing press and thus access to scripture was limited primarily because of that. But regular folks needed/wanted to join in prayer..and this was a way to do it. This was in place of daily prayer or 'Office of the hours' which I do as a Franciscan.
Amen to that my friend. Question. My Fiance is Catholic (well her mother is old fashioned hardcore Catholic). If I am married by a Priest, do they still insist that you must become Catholic for a Priest to Marry you or can I avoid that & get married by both Priest & my Pastor. This is stressing me out like you would not believe!
Wow.... I don't think you need to convert. Your best bet is to 1) talk to a priest as they will need a bishop's permission to do this (and I can't recall it ever being refused in my parish). 2) be prepared to take 'classes'. All marriages (which is considered a sacrament) are preceded by classes. Which I think is a VERY good idea no matter what your denomination :). We have to take an exam for a drivers license ..why not study for marriage :). Divorces may be fewer then.
Thanks man that sure helps a lot. I truly appreciate the help. Nop to get over the cold feet of getting marrried (breath in breath out haha!)
My Pastor preaches about Marriages & Couples quite a bit.
I am gonna email you right now a two part mini series on one sermons on couples/relationships. This one is particularly for men & how they should treat Women. Tell me what you think Brethren.
The Rosary is based on both Scripture & Tradition (& history.)
The idea was not foriegn; Early Christians counted the 150 psalms as a means of praying using a knotted chord or pebbles. However, the actual Rosary as we know it was given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan by Our Blessed Mother herself. God's weapon to defeat enemies for her "soldiers". To this day Dominicans still carry the Rosary hanging from thier side the way a military soldier would carry a sword or battle arm.
Mary was indeed concieved w/o original sin. Of course she was in need of a Savior, just as everyone else. However just as Luke 1:37 points out- with God nothing is impossible. Think of it this way- rather then being pulled out of the mud, God saved her from falling into it from the begining. See, she was still saved from sin- but not the way you and I were. She expresses that in Luke 1:46-55.Also, she was the Arc of the New Convenant, & stainless just as the Arc of the Cov. in the OT.
"Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours" (Joh 17:5-6,9)
