The good old days. Where the NFC East dominated the NFL and where all the teams beat one another. The Giants had the Redskins number, the Redskins had the Cowboys number, the Cowboys had the Eagles number and the Eagles had the Giants number.
I'll always remember Schroeder on the sideline appearing like he had just been knocked out by Tyson, which is what it felt like for opposing QB's taking on the '86 Giants. Schroeder probably had a concussion.
Amazing that John Madden was the greatest AFC coach, and the greatest NFC announcer. Growing up with him and Summerall on CBS, I couldn't believe that he was coach of the Raiders.
God I miss these days. Those games that ended just before the sun set in December at 4:45 and shit, with trash flying around with those old 30 MPH wind gusts. THIS WAS MY YOUTH.
@guesswho21900 the 50s giants had lombardi as offensive coordinator and landry as defensive coordinator. otherwise yes that is a pretty good coaching staff
From a Redskins fan.... respect to those Giants teams of the 80s. They were a tough bunch during that decade. The NFC East hasn't seen great teams like that since.
Both of those Giants Super Bowl wins back then were followed by a Redskins Super Bowl win too.
I remember watching this game with a friend of mine. He was in a hospital at the time as he had suffered a serious injury (he would recover) and we were both Giant fans. It was the first time I think that the Giants would play in a Superbowl which they won.
As a Redskin fan this was a very tough day especially to lose the NFC Championship to the hated Giants. But this was the loss that launched the 1987 Road to the Super Bowl for the Redskins & are 2nd Super Bowl Championship in 6 seasons.
Giant Curse starts when they moved away from that old dump. I hope the Jets start winning championships by the bench we are the real NEW YORK Team J-E-T-S Jets jets jets
Broncos fan here, but I think both the Giants and Resksins (as well as the Eagles) are class. Of course, the Cowboys are a bunch of scumbags and Jerry is a jerk.
I miss these times. I truly do. I wasn't born for the 50s an early 60s Giants teams so this was such a great experience. Superbowl XXV was amazing too (wide right Norwood) but this 86 team was amazing. Everything came together that year.Simms in the SB 22 for 25 for 268 yards, come on. Say what you will about him but he came to play on THE day. And yes Summerall and Madden's can't be beat. No one calls a game like they did. Perfection.
I remember at 2 years old my dad an uncles tossing me around after they won it all in 86, I also remember Super Bowl XXV wide right too. Still you have to think that XLII was the best because not only was it not expected to happen but the Giants stopped a dynasty.
this is what the giants are lacking now. a professional, hard working group that never gives up and wants it more then the other guy. Jim Burt is the shit hahahah.
@dcbandnerd I totally agree. And you know something, with Shanahan now, there was a time when the only two teams that mattered in the NFC were the Giants and the Redskins. Glory days are here again?.....
Typical Giant fan at 3:38. Schroeder looks about as out of it as any QB I've ever seen leaving a game on his own two feet. Switch Simms for Schroeder and the Redskins win by 10. Anyway, we got Jim Lachey from the Raiders for Schroeder, so at least he was good for SOMETHING... Unlike what the Skins have now.
I still remember watching this game. God, it was horrible. I hated the Giants and the Eagles worse than the Cowboys in the mid to late 80's. Parcells and Buddy Ryan were fat slobs who loved to scratch their sack when the camera was on them. Jeez! You never saw Coach Gibbs scratch his balls or spit on TV. Class act.
I am a Browns fan and with the painful loss to the Broncos in "The Drive," earlier that day. The Giants winning this game and then S.B. XXI made me feel a bit better, though it would've been interesting with a Browns-Giants S.B. matchup if it did happen.
i love conference championship games...more then the super bowl and i'm a steelers fan. i just seen my team win 2 super bowls in 4 years and the afc games meant more
Jay Schroder wouldn't get the chance next season either, Doug Williams led the Redskins to the Super Bowl title...and left him on the sidelines watching.
The Redskins wouldn't have made the playoffs if not for Schroeder and George Rogers. Then they were screwed over in favor of Williams and Timmy Smith.
Damn, what an incredible celebration. You just don't see this type of celebration anymore. Atmospheres seem so dead these days. And I am talking all sports. except NCAA, fans go nuts there.
In the wildcard game? That's good to know, now it's the seriously the most annoying sports trend ever to watch, it was lame in 85/86 and it's fucking dumb now.
We can't compare the '07 Giants to the '86 Giants. It's apples and oranges because the Giants were expected to win in 1986, at least from the standpoint of how they started and dominated teams. No one expected the 2007 Giants to go anywhere, least of all on a 4-game sack and pillage tour away from the Meadowlands during the Playoffs.

Schroeder went on to the raiders and lst the 1990 AFC Championship 51-3.
