"technically it's stealing but they probably won't catch you so go ahead and do it ".... oh man, a good laugh is just what the doctor ordered for a blue day like today.
Hey Lou F., I wondered how you achieved the background like that. May be you can do a tutorial on how to add a different background into a video using iMovie?
This video is a little obsolete for some people but don't be surprised how many are still running older OSes.
.... or you could just click on the air port icon in your toolbar and see the same list of networks without downloading or installing anything? What am I missing here? :)
OS X 10.4, when I made this 2 years ago, didn't have the lock to signify open/closed networks. 10.5+ do. It still doesn't show incoming signal strength. Not that it matters since 90% of routers has some form of encryption out of the box.
this might be caused by your neighbor having a mac address locked router. meaning they only authorized listed mac addresses to access their network. this kind of security does not display locked or secured when your device sees it.
what's the point in this? you don't need a little program to look for other internet access points... your airport does that on its own so why bother?
actually, airport only shows you networks it sees. Not if they are secure or insecure. iStumbler does that. Watch my Mac Tip on iStumbler to learn about this. Oh.. wait.. you did and you didn't get it. Well NOW you know. And knowing is 1/4 of the battle. Yo Joe!
KisMAC also works well. iStumbler has a much simpler interface, but KisMAC has more features and can find networks iStumbler can't. Also, you can hack into WEP and some WPA, if you're into that sort of thing... Mind you, KisMAC works most effectively with specific chipsets. Not every Mac can use its full potential.
Not only does this video suggest to the viewers that accessing private wi-fi without permission is condoned, the author discourages viewers from registering/paying for the software mentioned in this clueless clip.
A+ for accurate commenting. D- for "getting it" in general. Please everyone go pay for iStumbler so you can feel good about stealing WiFi... I mean checking signal strength.
Also, please update your blog. I want more helpful Wordpress tipperoos!

It's not technically stealing, it's more like that they are technically sharing their internet with you for free. ;)

But surely you can do that with the airport thingy anyway?
