infact it's very possible to improve strength values and not increase muscle hypertrophy greatly - many of the worlds top athletes are incredibly strong yet weigh 80-90kg for example - i know plenty of world class athletes who are capable of bench pressing more than 2X BW again for example... size and weight wasn't actually a major plus point for the old gladiators bigguns, your example is actually a poor one, as many pf the contenders blessed with great speed and

i get the point your making and agree with some of it but you can't say size of muscle is nothing to do with strength. are you old enough to remember the old gladiators show ? size, weight and strength were crucial to many events. if you have a guy running at you down a narrow channel and you have to block him then a guy who weighs 20 stone will do that more effectivly than a guy of 10 stone will. oblivion is smaller than alot of the contestants on the last show.
