  • "screw you... thanks for watching."

    ohgosh... i love this(:

  • Oh wait holy crap I remember this from Stumbleupon! You clever dog, you! The superhydrophobic spray is supposed to be available commercially in 2012.

  • born in 90's, i have rolling labyrinth

  • He's a fucking doctor.

  • can water be hydrophobic?

  • @yanivp1 hydrophobic water... Dante, invent this!!

  • Gotta love that goatee <3

  • chemical or biomechanical engineering.... hmm... chemical engineering may lead to increased funny bone mass. That or they've created a concoction that will do that, the fiends! They're holding out on us!

  • I honestly thought you were a professor...

  • I have learned so much! I am in AP Bio and freaked out at the mention of hydrophobia. Would dyed water have made a difference in appearance or the ability to slide?

  • @DoctorsGreenMaggot Yes, probably. It depends on whether or not the dye would interact with the surface or induce greater adhering at the surface. Certainly for chemical modified surfaces this would be a bigger concern. For purely physical modifications, like the Teflon, the dye might be less of an issue - but it would probably change the water's properties enough (like surface tension) that the air gaps in the micron-scale roughness would be filled in.

  • Why were none of my science teachers ever this awesome?

  • lol i was born in the nineties and i know exactly what labyrinth thingy you're talking about

  • Young'un, born in the 90's, going to college right here. Found your web/photo comic a few months ago, and became horribly, horribly addicted.

  • 1- I actually understood all of what you said and the principles behind it, for which i am proud of myself.

2- I own a labyrinth game and even made my own, because it's fun.

3- I'm a junior [credit wise] in college studying Astrophysics and math, and I was born mid -'93.

4- You are a genius and your web comics are hilarious!

  • accidental learning.....

  • I use my distillation column just for alcohol... does that make me a bad Chemical Engineer?

  • @krussader no, just a drunken one. :)

  • Hey, I'M a 90's kid, I'M in college, and /I/ had a labyrinth game! I'm a winner!

  • Comment removed

  • D= I just always thought you were a mad scientist.

  • You're a chem eng too?! That's so awesome! I'm a 3rd year undergraduate at Michigan Tech University in the Chemical engineering program!

  • Dante? Speaking? I must find out a way to put this video on my iPod. (Creeper, I know.) He sounds amazing.

  • I'm mostly upset that he didn't include German...

  • What is wrong with all these people not wanting to be affiliated with STW!?!? CRAZY.

  • @Legault397 Also I was a nineties baby and I had a marble labyrinth. =D

  • Nice to put a sexy voice to the sexy face.

  • I enjoy how defensive you are about facial hair, how many complaints must you have gotten?

Also I think it's awesome that you're a scientist who goes out of his way to entertain people.

  • I like that this has 0 dislikes.

  • Kids in the 90s SO had those labyrinth toys! Well, I did. '93. Heading off to college in a month ;)

  • :O THAT'S how you pronounce "caveats"?!?!?

Also, you look way too young to have a PhD, let alone one in Chem Eng.

  • @atjnAdfhhjea ummm

your aware that is how you pronounce caveats right?

  • @ablex7 No, that's the only time Ive ever heard the word out loud. I've only ever had to read it before.

  • @atjnAdfhhjea oh right, sorry :L

  • water + food coloring = problem solved.

  • I'm so proud of myself that I'm keeping up with this.

  • Weird science!

  • How was getting your getting you PhD in Chem Eng? I was looking at working towards a masters in Chem Eng.

  • Screw you too, friend. :)

  • I love how I found your science as enthralling as your comedy. *This comment is to remind you that there is indeed some kind of hope for the future, small as it may be*

  • you should start selling some advertising on your site and start making money some money

  • I love your comic, your witty insights always make my day :D

  • I definitely learned a lot more here than I have in the past couple of days of school.

  • I had started thinking his entire body was photoshopped in to every comic - he wasn't a real person.

  • I'm totally going to take sandpaper to my mother's pots and pans now. She'll be so happy to learn about superhydrophobic surfaces!

  • What stops us looking you up on pubmed? :P

  • Superhydrophobic surfaces! FOR SCIENCE! O.O

  • Surviving the world II: Eclectic Boogaloo...Hahaha +1

  • i actually noticed that rose petals seem to be hydrophobic as well and was curious about that, and then you posted this how lucky

  • Oh wow, you have a much deeper voice than I expected.

  • Huh I was under the impression that you were a Professor.

  • @LunarAffect I had thought that to.

  • @LunarAffect Yeah me too, lecturer/PhD fellow. I think the earlier comics were done at a university, and a lot of comics were directed at students etc, but a while ago Dante swapped to his house, or something, cos I think he got a new job, with no appropriate black board space.

  • YOU HAVE A VOICE?!!! (I actually was under the impression that you were mute and used ASL for your means of communication based off of your gestures)

  • Hey! I was born in the 90s, and I still play Labyrinth!

  • I don't know why, but i didn't think you'd have such a deep voice xD

  • you should do something like this more often.. well not the "q/a" part, but discussion of a scientific property or experiment that's interesting or in modern news and just discuss. you're down to earth enough and that's really great to see in the scientific community and making these topics more understandable!!

  • Thank you for uploading this video! Really interesting :)

  • Ok Dr. Shepard, I never really doubted your credentials. A little naive in this digital age, but I just didn't. It was interesting to hear you, and I have to admit I did not think you sounded like that. Still, and I mean no offense by this, the most fascinating thing in this video was the superhydrophobic (I hope I got that right) explanation and demonstration.

  • Now I can't stop reading his webcomic in his voice...

  • It's almost like they're embarrassed of you!

  • Definitely not the voice I would've put with his face.

  • Hey, Labyrinth is a great game and an awesome movie :D More people should know about it :3

  • Dante, was the teflon used to make the teflon smoother or rougher. I'm assuming smoother.

  • @milair47 Given that for it to work, you need small scale roughness, I'm going to go with rougher. Hence the need for very fine sandpaper, so you get very small ridges

  • I'm a kid from the 90s in college!

  • My hubby has a goatee on its own. I like the look.

  • Okay, I'll buy the scientist alter ego for now, but I will always have my suspicions, Shepherd!

  • Science!

  • Fun stuff Dante :) Keep it up

  • your voice is sexier than I ever could have imagined :0

  • Dante, you have to stop worrying about detractors; THERE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE SOME

Concentrate on the fact that far more people really enjoy what you do.

    Thanks for the laughs!

    Suggest colouring dye next time?

  • you sound exactly as I thought you would

  • Comment removed

  • I rock a goatee too, I understand. It looks good on you.

  • I was born 1990. I SO remember the marble labyrinth balance games!

  • i'm a kid from the 90s, and i'm in college :)

  • Your eyes look like your contacts are killing them. Is that not uncomfortable for you?

  • But that's some really neat work there! I can understand how that could be useful! :D Awesome stuff, there. :3

  • Dante's voice is quite deeper than I though. ._.;

Or maybe it's more, I'm a girl, so the voice kinda sounds like mine when I read the comics in my head. Ehehehee..

  • i have one of those labyrinth games!

  • my fiancee says the same thing when referring to non-existent sequels, is that a guy thing?

  • Who's the cameraguy? :D

  • @SentinelZed German, obviously.

  • Dante! The science! It's SO COOL! If I ever get my hands on some teflon that's not in a cooking implement, I'm totally going to make a superhydrophobic surface to play with. :D

Science videos are awesome. And you make science interesting, like it should be! More science videos in the future, please?

Also, I'd like to note that I was born in the 90's, and I totally had one of those marble labyrinth games when I was a kid. It was one of my favorites.

  • WOAH....he speaks....

Heh, as a biologist-in-training, I think this stuff is pretty neat. I'm excited to get into grad school to do research of my own!

  • Dante Shepard.

Hell of a name right there.

  • @TyenDesign That cause if he were in a video he'd probably be the most badass scientist ever. Fuck Bill Nye and his sound effects, I barely learned shit from him.

  • Dante, for your next experiment, you can test the hypothesis that tables can let you more carefully aim and focus the camera while being able to simultaneously move water droplets across a surface like one of those marble labyrinths.

  • I DONT CARE I JUST WANT TO SEE MORE RAPTOR IMPRESSIONS

  • Excellent video. It's a shame that your collaborators are so reluctant to be affiliated with STW. I firmly believe that scientists need to be more closely tied to and communicating with the public. You do an excellent job of that.

  • 8:00 - Gahhhhh.... (takes headphones of, shivering). Stop it!

  • I wonder if his coworkers have the same sense of humor as him, or if he's that one weird kid who makes puns ALL THE TIME.

  • I'm still confident that changing my major was the right decision, but that really made me miss the lab.

  • '93 here, and I'm in my senior year of high school. I do not want to go to college, hell, I didn't want to drive. If I could, I would go back to elementary school without a second thought.

  • This has been Late Night Science with Dante Shepherd, brought to you from the Sheperds' Storage Closet.

I'd like to see more of these videos, this was incredibly entertaining and educational.

  • As a child of '91, I must say, not only was the science you described fascinating, and entertaining, but I have played with one of those "balls in a maze" games you mentioned. ;) Keep up the fantastic comic!

  • kids from the 90s in college yeah scary, i just moved my sister in on wednesday and yes it is scary knowing how much of an airhead she is

  • Well, that affirmed my planned choice of major.

By the way what grit sand paper did you use?

  • @SamN234 He mentions in the video that the sand paper needs to be about 320 grit.

  • I was born in 1990, I am a senior in college and yes we still have those. Perplexus is my favorite

  • Yes Dante, kids from the 90's are in college.

I do not know how old you are but we college kids look up to you sir. Mainly because you are both entertaining and incredibly intelligent.

  • Hi Dante. I was wondering, how long did it take for you to get your PhD?

  • Everyone knows Dante photoshops his beard in the videos as well! But in all seriousness, Dante is a badass. Science, bitches!

  • So if a person were to search for scientific journals or papers with your name on them, would we be able to find them at all? I may not be a scientist, but I do enjoy learning.

  • My brother had a labyrinth game as well. He was born in 88. I was born 1990.

  • I was born in the 90s and still toy around with my old labyrinth game!

  • @fearthetenebrae me as well!

  • he sounds so much different than i thought

  • @thetexastoaster Really? He sounds pretty much exactly how I imagined

  • Comment removed

  • You look reaaaaly tired...

  • @scienceboy sounds tired too

  • god damn that scraping was evil to my ears, with headphones in... god..

  • I'm pretty sure if he didn't have his goatee he'd look about 12... Just saying.

  • I knew that beard was hiding something...

  • that is SO COOL.

    I love science!

  • Dante is speaking.. what? what... grawghylsgoiepa

  • @Deathnotez123 I know right... I was expecting one of the misconceptions to be that he's mute.

  • i was just thinking looking at Lesson #1150 how much of an awesome scientist you'd be if you were one :D I'm happy to know you are one
