chemical or biomechanical engineering.... hmm... chemical engineering may lead to increased funny bone mass. That or they've created a concoction that will do that, the fiends! They're holding out on us!
I have learned so much! I am in AP Bio and freaked out at the mention of hydrophobia. Would dyed water have made a difference in appearance or the ability to slide?
@DoctorsGreenMaggot Yes, probably. It depends on whether or not the dye would interact with the surface or induce greater adhering at the surface. Certainly for chemical modified surfaces this would be a bigger concern. For purely physical modifications, like the Teflon, the dye might be less of an issue - but it would probably change the water's properties enough (like surface tension) that the air gaps in the micron-scale roughness would be filled in.
I love how I found your science as enthralling as your comedy. *This comment is to remind you that there is indeed some kind of hope for the future, small as it may be*
@LunarAffect Yeah me too, lecturer/PhD fellow. I think the earlier comics were done at a university, and a lot of comics were directed at students etc, but a while ago Dante swapped to his house, or something, cos I think he got a new job, with no appropriate black board space.
you should do something like this more often.. well not the "q/a" part, but discussion of a scientific property or experiment that's interesting or in modern news and just discuss. you're down to earth enough and that's really great to see in the scientific community and making these topics more understandable!!
Ok Dr. Shepard, I never really doubted your credentials. A little naive in this digital age, but I just didn't. It was interesting to hear you, and I have to admit I did not think you sounded like that. Still, and I mean no offense by this, the most fascinating thing in this video was the superhydrophobic (I hope I got that right) explanation and demonstration.
@milair47 Given that for it to work, you need small scale roughness, I'm going to go with rougher. Hence the need for very fine sandpaper, so you get very small ridges
Dante! The science! It's SO COOL! If I ever get my hands on some teflon that's not in a cooking implement, I'm totally going to make a superhydrophobic surface to play with. :D
Science videos are awesome. And you make science interesting, like it should be! More science videos in the future, please?
Also, I'd like to note that I was born in the 90's, and I totally had one of those marble labyrinth games when I was a kid. It was one of my favorites.
@TyenDesign That cause if he were in a video he'd probably be the most badass scientist ever. Fuck Bill Nye and his sound effects, I barely learned shit from him.
Dante, for your next experiment, you can test the hypothesis that tables can let you more carefully aim and focus the camera while being able to simultaneously move water droplets across a surface like one of those marble labyrinths.
Excellent video. It's a shame that your collaborators are so reluctant to be affiliated with STW. I firmly believe that scientists need to be more closely tied to and communicating with the public. You do an excellent job of that.
'93 here, and I'm in my senior year of high school. I do not want to go to college, hell, I didn't want to drive. If I could, I would go back to elementary school without a second thought.
As a child of '91, I must say, not only was the science you described fascinating, and entertaining, but I have played with one of those "balls in a maze" games you mentioned. ;) Keep up the fantastic comic!
So if a person were to search for scientific journals or papers with your name on them, would we be able to find them at all? I may not be a scientist, but I do enjoy learning.
"screw you... thanks for watching."
