Zone defense is rarely used in the NBA opposed to this guy saying its standard. A screen would break any Zone cuz players aren't allowed to follow you once you get by them. There are obvious weak spots of Zone D (2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1, 2-2-1, 1-2-2, 2-1-2) and can be broken down into a 1 on 1 or 2 on 1 with a screen or two.
I coach college ball and I will tell you, there was not a single Zone D evident in this video. Only obligatory off ball doubles from man to man

Even when my teammate is setting me a screen, my driving lane is still being cut 90% of the time. There is a reason why Zone D is extremely rare in the NBA. Teams that use zones are mostly defensively impaired and those who are not good at man to man. Zones have gaps (areas that are not well-covered by defenders) that can be exploited by teams that pass well or have guards capable of penetrating the zone.So zone never had a reputation of sealing penetration. If you say you got cut off 90% of the time not seeing the gaps then you're just starting to sound fishy to me
@caod27 When a teammate set a screen and I drive to the basket, the first thing that I encounter is the big man stepping up to the paint to stop me penetrating. I would either dish out a pass when the defense collapse. Pull up a mid range jump shot or go ahead and try to draw a foul with a hard contact. Sometime the guard step up to help the big man out. Once and awhile I can drive all the way to the basket when the defense is slow or there not paying attention.
Zone defenses are anything but rare in the NBA. Every team plays zone defense. It's not a pure zone because of the defensive 3 second rule, but it's a hybrid zone that evolves every season. When the new defensive rules started there was chaos because nobody knew what to do. But teams are more than used to zone-minded defensive schemes nowadays. If you can't see it you're probably only watching the ball handler. Try to really watch a game and you'll see.
I think its you who should watch the game. Zone is an established fact a rare option for a defensive scheme in the NBA, ALL coaches will say that. Do you even know hot to spot a zone? Do you even know what zone is? The default defensive scheme in the NBA is man-to-man as it guards every player while zone guards only the location of the ball and provides risk of a man being open everytime. Hand checking sometimes happens in todays league and so does the defensive 3 sec rule and back the double teaming off the ball still happened. No matter what rules are put in they still get broken. Athletics and most things get better over time. Aside from the stars MJ's era was pretty weak for talent. MJ was just miles ahead of most players back then and there's more talent now and that's why Kobe isn't.
@KobeConfidence Now you may see a player placing his hand on the ball handler, but that's not checking. hand checking is practically grabbing and pushing to avoid the ball handler's movements. You and I know that that would be clear foul today.

All the guys I mentioned including Kobe would have been neck and neck w/ MJ in his era.

When guarding a faster player and you're not on the perimeter, hand checking is how you can tell where they are really going. You can tell where they are pushing. You can push THEM to make them go one way

Almost all these clips of Kobe getting double teamed, etc, Jordan faced the same stuff all the time. Jordan Rules. The main difference is the 3 second defense rule and no hand checks. The lane is WIDE open all the time and defense has to be much more passive.

I think this video describes perfectly how today's way more complex defensive mentality is used to take away perimeter players. Of course the players in the Jordan era will say that defense was tougher back then. Judge for yourself. That's in addition to Jordan shooting over 6"4 shooting guards with poor lateral movement. Players were able to play more physical in the paint. They weren't physical on the perimeter. If players were able to play physical today, players can't foul Kobe hard. Why? Zone defense is rarely used in the NBA opposed to this guy saying its standard. A screen would break any Zone cuz players aren't allowed to follow you once you get by them. There are obvious weak spots of Zone D (2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1, 2-2-1, 1-2-2, 2-1-2) and can be broken down into a 1 on 1 or 2 on 1 with a screen or two.
I coach college ball and I will tell you, there was not a single Zone D evident in this video. Only obligatory off ball doubles from man to man

There is a reason why Zone D is extremely rare in the NBA. Teams that use zones are mostly defensively impaired and those who are not good at man to man. Zones have gaps (areas that are not well-covered by defenders) that can be exploited by teams that pass well or have guards capable of penetrating the zone.So zone never had a reputation of sealing penetration. @caod27 When a teammate set a screen and I drive to the basket, the first thing that I encounter is the big man stepping up to the paint to stop me penetrating. I would either dish out a pass when the defense collapse. Pull up a mid range jump shot or go ahead and try to draw a foul with a hard contact. Sometime the guard step up to help the big man out. Once and awhile I can drive all the way to the basket when the defense is slow or there not paying attention.

Zone defenses are anything but rare in the NBA. Every team plays zone defense. It's not a pure zone because of the defensive 3 second rule, but it's a hybrid zone that evolves every season. When the new defensive rules started there was chaos because nobody knew what to do. But teams are more than used to zone-minded defensive schemes nowadays. If you can't see it you're probably only watching the ball handler. Try to really watch a game and you'll see.

I've seen MJ vs the Celtics playoff game( they were considered great defensively) where he scored 63 points and it only showed makes but I don't think I even saw MJ get hand checked once and I saw him get 20 freethrow attempts on calls players get now to.

They were good defensively, but the real handchecking was exposed when Jordan played against the Pistons and Knicks, not the Celtics. There is something called "Jordan Rules". @KobeConfidence 1990s was talented. It appears 90s weren't talented because Jordan was that good. But it's irrelevant. Jordan was so good that he could separate from the rest of the league. Magic said it: There's Michael Jordan and then there is the rest of us. He couldn't have said it any better. Bryant isn't as good as Jordan, that's why he could not separate from players like James, Wade, etc. Jordan today would separate even more from these players.

As for Jordans first three peat, there still wasn't much talent as guys like Magic, Bird, etc were getting old and out of their prime. Kobe is better than Wade and Lebron but not by much. Wade and Lebron are in their youth still and Kobe's been 30+ years old playing in an athletic era and still maintains the best player in the league.

@KobeConfidence In the second three-peat there were expansion teams, but the West was stacked, just like today. Jordan had to beat those West teams. During this period, the Bulls beat five 60-win teams, including East teams, and defeated all of them. The only time the present day Lakers faced a 60-win team they got destroyed. Competition in the regular season might not be as good, but in the playoffs, I guarantee you it was.

@KobeConfidence In the first three-peat the competition was even better. Magic was 31 in 1991, the same age Bryant had when he won his 5th ring. He was good enought to led his Lakers to the third best recor din the league. Then the Bulls faced Drexler and Barkley in the Finals and Ewing in earlier playoff rounds. I think the league was talented.

@Hawkhunter07 A lot of kids and younger people are actually smarter than older people. Plus it's not like I'm a slouch druggy kind of kid. I have a 3.8GPA and have took honors math, and debate. I've played basketball since I was like 3... I play basketball and workout mon-fri,sunday . I said that double teaming off the ball happened even though it was illegal and I also even though handchecking isn't legal it still happens. Is that unfair? No I don't think so.

@Hawkhunter07 Dude no it wasn't... MJ was one of the greatest of all time playing in a talent almost deprived era. The times MJ did face tough competition, like vs Payton's Sonics and certain teams he struggled. It's harder for Kobe to dominate his era because he had Wade, Durant , Lebron, Carmello, etc all who by the end of their careers will at least be mentioned as being close to as good as MJ. All the guys I mentioned including Kobe would have been neck and neck w/ MJ in his era.

Mj's great no doubt and I'm not discrediting him but the only reason he did good at age 40 was cause he had literally no good players besides him on the wizards and they weren't even a playoff team so teams didn't treat them to seriously. Also if u look at statistics, MJ's fg% ever sinced 1994 dropped in the playoffs from the regula season so he'd have worse stats in the playoff
