@junjii yep you are right. patience is the key in kendo ( or other sword involving arts). if you are being impatient and attack first, your opponent have the advantage. but if your opponent absentminded you can win with first attack(it's a dangerous gamble:) )..
im not a kendoka, judging from this video, kendo is a relaxing art. from the time you put on your armor to the duel itself. you gotta have clear mind and some level of patience to pull a successful move.
@junjii No it's actually not relaxing at all. When you go to a real match, or even just practising, it's really intense and you have to shout, your arms must lift the sword quick and perform a cut correctly, your feet also must stump and push your body forward. Gosh, I love Kendo, best sport in the world (in my opinion)
So, where do i go if i want the sort of fighting they have in movies. No disrespect, but this seems kind of boring. Each fight lasts under 2 seconds? I'd rather see combo's, blocks, and full swings than two guys trying to tap each other on the head. Or dose kendo have those too?
Its all right. You say, this sport is boring. You are right, if you don't do that sport. It's boring, like the biathlon, or the speed skateing. But if you are a Kendoka, you enjoy the motion. You enjoy the silence, in your head. Couse you dont plan the next attack. Its comeing for instinct.
Its a kind of art. A lots of people dont like it. But its all right. If someone wants to see spectacular fights, find some video for capoeira. Capoeira fights are amzing, I think. :)
You should see if you can find a course on stage/theatrical combat. The kind of fighting you usually see in movies is not at all realistic. It is more like dance. Kendo and Western are all about efficiency of movement and timing, not about flare. If you tried the stuff in most movies, you would be dead in a real sword fight. Possibly, if all you want is more parrying, you could try eskrima, but you still won't get spin attacks or leaping chops.
I've not been doing it for long, had to wait the best part of twenty years before there was a dojo open in my locale, but I'm already addicted. Hard day at work, stressed out - do a Kendo session and it's all gone. Kendo is a beautiful thing, and makes almost no sense to anyone who doesn't do it.
Hmmm ... I bumped upon this video randomly and realised the Kendōka had "Gent" (a Belgian city) on their dō, which would mean they're from my own Kendo club xD I only joined the club back this august though. Also pretty sure the Jap girl on the end is member of my club :p
Weird to find this randomly. Nice vid and song though :) Shame the quality is not as good, would love to see it in 480p.
Like! you deserve it nice job
