I'm using both Mainstage and Ableton Live and would say they are quite different. If I play live audio and synths (like this NiN video shows) I prefer Mainstage because everything is neatly included. But if I need to play back pre prepared audio files from disc Ableton is what I use. I tried last year to set up eight surround files in Mainstage's File Player and it just crashed the appl. Ableton rocks for playing back long files (if you turn off warping).

how are they using mainstage when a year ago they were bragging about using live? but maybe they make more money by advertising for daws or other audio softwares then from music making. also the guy says that pretty much every thing you hear comes from main stage. that's either a lie or is true and very lame. and this video is just a lame copy of what ableton does really good with those artist videos.

@bradnightmare It could be an X-Serve (that's a Mac server that mounts on a rack). The keyboard+trackpad you see there is probably just a third-party keyboard with a trackpad. It's NIN, so they probably did go all-out :)

@2009CODMW Yes, but you'll need to route output from the amp into a mixer/interface and into the mac.

funny thing is.. nin use (used) all of the major programs. But on stage ive actualy seen display of one of engeneers and he was clearly using Ableton Live. (If you look at NIN onstage videos its in one of them). So this looks to me just like commercial. Maybe they changed it who knows.

Mainstage 2 kick ass...It works on my HP MINI HACKINTOSH with the interface, btw the vocals sound effects sound like hardware from madison square garden, GREAT:), though haven't try the guitar amps but i honestly prefer Gtr 3 for that...really cool!!!!

I am using Main Stage with Guitar Rig 3 and GTR 3 and then I am able to use the Logic reverb and delays as well.

it is mid blowing. Setting up your own interface for any preset...

You are probably right. I have ableton too but it doesn't work properly. My keyboard's sliders,knobs and buttons aren't working and the pitch bend doesn't return to the normal pitch when its released but It might not be because of ableton cause the pitch bend doesn't work with FL studio either.

1. where does anyone claim exclusivity? What Mat Mitchell says is "pretty much 100% of what you hear is coming out of Mainstage" (0.57 in the video).

2. Ghosts was a studio project, this video (and any claims it contains about Logic/Mainstage) are clearly related to the live aspect of the Lights In The Sky tour.

You're trying to rebut an argument that no-one is actually making, whilst suggesting things about Apple for which you have absolutely no proof. Good work.

Logic 8 is a really good program as well as mainstage. I mean you can't think your going to install it and produce something like a NIN right off the back, I mean...its possible depending on your skill level, its like a large fucking leap from garageband. With the same type of GUI in the program. Nice large user manual more like for trouble shooting i call it in the studio. I'm just using my MIDI keyboard and different signal processors and rewire for guitar rig 2

I traded Protools/Kore in for Logic Pro, very much more abstract and creative where as Digidesign with Protools things are complex and you have to have the right hardware they want with midi controllers and I use different synthesizers to get that perfect sound can't really just use USB, has to be midi connections mostly.I never understood the mixers on screen so when doing production, I'd just get a digital mixer... I get shit from my assist.t producer in the studio he uses Reason

early days, meaning since some of the PHM touring and lolla 1991 and I noticed it alot during the Self Destruct Tours 94-95 and Fragility Tours I think and I heard it used on the With Teeth Tours live a good bit, you can hear it on the With Teeth dvd. Trent doesn't use that cheap Digitech vocal effects pedal

um, the vocal effects on Trent's mic stand is a digidesign feature he has used since the early days of NIN since they do most multi-track recording in Protools which is made by Digidesign which I'm sure they incorporated all into the mainstage live system...yeah I love Mac, Apple has been above everyone else and so cool, compared to windows for sure. I still have to use my pc in some of my college shit.
