It's both interesting and disturbing that, in the post Sutherland era, we have a new generation of sopranos who insist on interpreting the bel canto repertoire as if it is verismo. This stems in part from the perception that opera can only work today if it is intensely "dramatic" and therefore "credible" in the eyes of modern audiences. But histionics inevitably compromise the musical integrity of these great works, and prevent the voice from channelling what their composers intended.
I'm also glad I'm not the only one who dislikes her voice. Vocal students at colleges in my area often dare each other to listen to her singing as punishment. >.<
@ScorpionGrasshopper I am nor her fan neither her advocate. But I can barely bear such unfair comments. I would wish your students will be able to sing in such way in their future carrier. Do you mean she reached her fame and popularity only among stupid and totaly ignorant opera lovers???? I do not like e.g. Theodossiou or Sills in this role, so I do not listen them. But it is not their foul, their voices simply do not sound pleasantly to me or they are too hysteric.
By far, my least favorite soprano. Consider @10:37 onward. There is a hideous scratching sound to her voice. The role simply does not suit her. She is pushing far too hard, and it shows. I think she is trying to darken her voice to sound more like a dramatic, and she sounds like she it shitting bricks instead. There is a sharp inhale @10:50 that makes me question her health and training in breath. She is, however, a good actress.
i thought this production was very impressive. the wein production was also good. netrebko's performance is spell binding. she really gets this character more than anyone else who currently sings the role. some may think she isn't a true bel canto singer, and that is their right, but it doesn't change the fact that this IS bel canto and netrebko is getting rave reviews being she sings very well.
@christiaandhooghe She is improved from the Wien performance, but still far to be a Belcanto singer for the simple reason she doesn't know to sing belcanto!

I am SO surprised and happy with the high note at the end of Netrebko!(11.54 min.)
Very stabile, and she kept her silver lines.(0.28 min.)
Wow!
This one is better then her first production.
She grows in the field of Queens.
