Do you have any siblings? Have any friends that you ever played a "game" of touching them with your finger until they got mad? Seriously dude, He is touching an animal, Hedgehogs are known to be cranky, It isn't something that has ever been bred out of them. But in your commenting about how "mean" he is. Your best response is "go get run over by a truck will you?" who the **** do you think you are? God? I mean really, I'm sure you have done MUCH MUCH worse things to animals.
@JohanKH Hedgehogs are naturally very nervous/jumpy animals. You have to expose them to things for them to get used to it. This includes touching them. Hedgehogs that haven't yet been well socialized will react this way just when somebody comes near.
@QualityQuills Not really. It's a natural defense. I've had my hedgehog for a year and given her time to adjust to her surroundings and my scent and she does the exact same thing even if I do everything right. Not all hedgehogs are the same in how they react and not all are fond to petting of any kind. They are just very defensive creatures and easily spooked.
@CrimsonKumiho You should never pet a hedgehog who is not being held in your hands. From a breeder I know, Gail, who has been breeding hedgehogs for 12 years, this is what she says: "Many grouchy hedgehog behaviors such as clicking, popping, and huffling are learned responses to how they are handled...never allow people to touch a hedgehog without picking it up....(continued)
@CrimsonKumiho "...When a hedgehog senses something coming down upon it they naturally huff and puff to protect their self. The hedgehog quickly learns that it should huff and puff when a hand approaches." (Gail from Millermeade Farms)
@QualityQuills True, but it's the reaction you give after touching the hedgehog that causes it to continue i.e. flinching. My hedgehog stops huffing after a few seconds or so if I show that it doesn't bother me.
Lol I take care of the hedgehogs at my zoo and all 4 of them are grumpy-pusses. haha Especially the big male. It's so funny how upset he is until I pull out the meal worms. Then he's all cuddles.
I like her name. Did you come across that in 'Watership Down' by any chance? That's the only place I've heard it before, and I even considered it for my hedgie.
I would suggest a LOT of research before you even think about actually getting one. They aren't too hard to care for, but they do have specific needs.
I didn't give you a thumbs down. Hedgehogs always huff and have a grumpy demeanor. You can give her food and she could huff at you! You don't take this as behaviour as upset. If they're truly upset, quills go up. She's just a little annoyed....it's nothing more than a playful tease. Nothing I would worry about. : )
You know what I love? I love how people get all defensive about how "cruel" you are to your hedgehog. Let's be realistic here. He is reacting the same way a cat reacts to being startled, and no one gets upset about that. This video is funny as shit. Everyone needs to get the hell over it. Anyone with a hedgehog, such as myself, knows that they act like that often, and it's even funnier in real life.
Haha. Nice to see someone knows better. I'm not scaring her or anything like that. That's just how hedgies act when ornery. (Heck, even when they're not ornery.) Half of those "pokes" of mine, I'm not even touching her.
Tell me about it!!! lol why'd I get 3 thumbs down? Hedgies just like to act tough sometimes. This isn't "cruel" at ALL. All of em are grumps and huff all the time. It's frackin cute!!!
I'm guessing whoever thumbs downed my comment knows very little about 'em.
When my hedgehog first did that to me I literally freaked out. Poor girl :(

It's your pet but you're messing with it over and over again? Yeah. Great pet, or rather, great owner.
