Its very sad, This video gets almost no comments. This song changed me, for the better. I think about how this makes me feel. Both, Leonard Cohen, adn Jonathan Coulton, are very very talented artists, Though personally, i prefer Jonathan coulton, and this version of the song. This song made me cry for one of the first times in about 3 years, and it really does have meaning. Think about what that must have felt like...
I've never cried because of a song or movie or whatever, and this is no exception. But this moved me and struck a chord deep within myself with some emotion that I am waiting to have the experience of, waiting for the event in my life that is yet to occur but will usher this broken-heart beauty.
Sometimes I wish I could cry at these things, to be a stoic is be the stranger to thyself, to be unknown by all including you.
@KershawIII For the most part he is a music comedian, but he is also a very talented musician whos songs come in a variety of styles -- from the slow paced and mellow " when you go " to the fast paced and rocking "Code Monkey"
No I dont think hes making this cheery he's making it kind of sad actully and the reason he plays the banjo is because he plays the banjo its that simple. I listen to alot of JoCo songs and this one is very good.
@Lamashtar Basically the song is about a love triangle between the singer, Jane and the man he's singing to. It's supposed to be in the form of a letter and it's about how he's slightly grateful to the man for "removing the trouble from Jane's eyes" because he never could. What's sadder is that he refers to the man as his brother and killer. A very sad and sweet song I think.
OMG. It has nothing of the feeling of the original. It's just um-pa-pa, um-pa-pa. It could be a nice song... if it wasn't that song. He could as well be reciting phone book. There's no poetry in this.
@SpadajSpadaj agree 100%! this sounds technically good, but contains none of the feeling or passion of the original. leonard cohen's original is evocative of the sparse, empty, barren-ness in the heart of someone who has suffered such a wound but who struggles to forgive.
this one sounds as if joco is trying to make it more cheerful which completely misses the point.
that's the best reason i can find to explain the banjo. banjo = wtf?
This song happened to me. I couldn't believe it when I heard it for the first time.

A great cover.
It really shows you how wide of a spectrum Jonathan Coulton has.
Great musician, great song, and a faithful cover.
