I'd say pixel noise or artifacts that are blown out by a strong reflection plus a long exposure. To really try and rule out something like eye reflection on an animal in the dark, I'd consider figuring out a way to make a remote flash rig in addition to the main one on the camera. A fill flash further back should really make it obvious whether or not its a known animal or some other object. If these anomalies repeat often enough with the existing rig, I don't see why this can't be done.
