Nowadays there is a lack of real artists in the opera world. Singers today seem to be more interesteded in fame and money made through strong marketing and PR campaigs than in developing as artists.
@TheVoicelesson You are correct with one exception: It is not the fault of the singer, it's that the nature of the business has changed dramatically. I think that now that the art is not making much money, cd sales are way down, production costs are too high, that we will see a return to the old model where an artist is developed fully. For there are less options to "sell" and it makes more sense to develop. But there is only so much reinvention that the art form can take.
A beautiful and an enorrmous voice, very high musicality has his voice also, a great artist, and a great man! He deserves all the congratulations for his career ! He is one from the last singers who use the technic with the down larynx and has a enormous breath also ! He will sing at Bucarest National Opera this saturday and I cant wait enymore to see and to hear him!
I love how he says that it is most important to hear the voice live in the theatre rather than on disc or with the assistance of amplification. Great singer and seems to be a great human being. I think very under rated for his talents by the big houses. Maybe not commercial or PR driven enough like the Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras' of the world.
I heard him singing Otello in Helsinki few years ago (I think it was 2006). He had of course some problems with his voice but it was one of my greatest opera experiences ever!
His emphasis on "the spirituality of the voice," and its capcity to "repair the damage done (to the soul) by the world" shows very well that as a human being, he has far greater depth and intellect than the typical performer. This is a very, very serious artist, with a truly grand vision of his art and its purpose. He is a giant.
Listen to Franco Corelli and Hans Hotter speak. They seem to speak away from the depth of their singing voices. Others lean into the spoken voice and sound similar to their singing voice while speaking.
lol, Agatarco, would you mind deleting my last post with all that spelling errors asnd this one, leaving the once that will follow after this? I'll correct the spelling.
It might be good for us all. But all do not understand Italian that well or our understanding of Italian is very limited or non-existent. If so, this video is worthless.
Can this be reposted with English subtitles or dubbing?
He speaks very well, and very much to the point. He comes across as a man and an artist who has a very clear idea of what he is doing. Giacomini was an excellent musician and stylist. His stage diction is the best I have ever heard from a tenor. He takes the trouble to carefully sing the closed e's and o's, and the result is a very dignified presence, which conforms to his intelligent and musical singing.
Excellent observations, David. His register balance was splendid, as can be heard both from the sonorous richness at the bottom, & the laser like squillo at the top. The brilliant closed ee's & the focused bright oo's both rely on a correctly produced upper register. Oo's & ee's are not vowel sounds that can be 'boomed' in a full lower register after the voice has risen above the bridge. This is why many of todays baritones & tenors have almost indistinguishable vowel sounds & no vocal colours.
In a nutshell, he says you shouldn't go to the opera house wanting to judge a singer by how he will produce his high pitches, how he will do this or that technically, but rather you should go there to receive what the singer has within himself, what really counts, not what is visible outside.
Splendido nella voce....! e Splendida persona...!!

Excellent. He looks like we would find him in a bus station looking for cigarette ends - but he speaks and sings the truth.
