the car also benefited from the most experienced racing driver on the track, but i think that the rx7 would have won or taken 2nd place regardless of who was driving it.

it's not rare for the rx7 to win, the issue is they usually test the rx7 as a stock engine against tuned cars. they do it because the rx7 is so light compared to its competitors. check out the video where the rx7 went up against a huge host of cars including a RUF 911 and an F40 ferrari, it was one of the fastest cars in the race (beat all the other jp cars)

you've never driven a high performance car have you, the nsx handles wonderfully with only a slight bit of snappy oversteer at times. most times it has understeer because of the front wheel toe in design. the rx is possibly the greatest sports car of all time, perfect weight, looks and practicality, and a fantastic engine as well.
No this is not a spirit R. I have #822 of 1000, this is not a spirit R. You would see the badge, and I don't see it. All Spirit R's have them, including mine. Plus, the spirit R is also 280 HP. It has a lot of suspension and body upgrades, but not Engine.

The RX-7 doesn't have a special edition higher output model. It's special edition (these are designated RZ) had only body or chassis enhancements. The RS is the standard RX-7. Mine is RS, it's a 4 seater. Both the RZ and the RS are 280HP. What the actual acronym stands for I didn't ask. But that's what's on my order form (yes I kept it, along with brochure, and everything else). I'll ride with mitch on this, LOL.

I didnt buy my RX-7 for the power, i brought it for the looks, the handling and power is a beautiful bonus, with thoes fuel savers [5 of them] i get 29mpg city 32 highway [quite efficent :P]

pointless arguing over the GTR & RX7. I'd like to see the Spirit R Type A RX7 Vs the top-spec R34 GTR with the EVO 8 & 9 involved. The story would be substantially different then. The refinements in the spirit R type A were substantial - circa 230kw, 1120kg, upgraded suspension and perfect 25% weight distribution at each wheel. The top spec R34 GTR had similar upgrades too. The Evo 8 & 9 are R34 GTR killers, so the contest would have been down to the FD and the Evos.
This is incorrect. I own a spririt R, type B (got kids). But I also looked at a Type A. The type A is only 10 kg lighter. Both the A and B are the same except the 2 seater (A) has plastic compartments behind the front seats where the 4 seater (B) has 2 more small seats with seatbelts. Also the type A has an Aluminum Floor mat (mat - for a lack of a better word) on the passenger side. Lastly, the type A had gunmetal BBS and mine are bright polished Aluminum BBS wheels (same design). That's all.
something to note: the R34 GTR as the driver said was "still very new" and he wasnt used to driving it. The RX7, had been out for quite a while already. Not saying the GTR should have one, just saying its something to keep in mind.

I hate to say it, but these were pretty much the best available cars at the time this video was filmed (roughly 1998-1999). The RX had to be a Type RS, there wasn't GT-R Nur spec yet, the NSX-R didn't exist, and the Evo 5 was the newest Lancer. I'm glad to see that the RX-7 proved its worth here. Although I'd like to have seen the Supra in this matchup too.
Ummm, you lost me. A GTR costs $120,000?? Even in the states they were only like $95,000 to import through Motorex, when that place was still around. In Japan, these cars are about the same price. Do they cost that much in Australia??
In Japan, 2002 Rx-7 cost me $43,000 (Y4,876,???) brand new with additional dealer markup. Here in Japan, R34 V-Spec back about 6 years ago was close to $65,000 with additional dealer mark-up.

This track has CORNERS. Corners require the car to turn and also have the ability to use its avaiable power to exit the corners. A '69 Hemi Daytona cannot an will never corner like these cars do. It probably would spin the tires exiting all the corners too. Last of all, the GT-R is a heavy car with the same power as the RX-7. On a tighter track like Tsukuba...it'll have trouble beating the RX-7.

That is the first time I've ever heard FR used that way. I thought that you guys thought that was some special designation, LOL. With all the people that do not know what they are talking about in these forms......ummm..... Sorry about lumping you in with them. However, I would think that after over 1,000,000 RX-7's were sold worldwide, everybody would know this. In fact, I don't know of any true sports car that's not RWD or AWD.

The RX-7 doesn't have a special edition higher output model. It's special edition (these are designated RZ) had only body or chassis enhancements. The RS is the standard RX-7. Mine is RS, it's a 4 seater. Both the RZ and the RS are 280HP. What the actual acronym stands for I didn't ask. But that's what's on my order form (yes I kept it, along with brochure, and everything else). I'll ride with mitch on this, LOL.

According to Wiki, there was 840+k. However, I have a picture in RX-7 magazine of the 1,000,000 RX-7 with a huge 1,000,000 on the car (a red convertible FC). I will be posting it on my site).

Jinx, you are very correct. I have the last 7 (Spirit R, yes I live in Japan) and I wax cars all the time that have more ponies than me cause I'm running at about 2700 pounds (360 RWHP now). Thats equal to a R34 running at 500 RWHP.

I didnt buy my RX-7 for the power, i brought it for the looks, the handling and power is a beautiful bonus, with thoes fuel savers [5 of them] i get 29mpg city 32 highway [quite efficent :P]

Brilliant video. I don't care for the arguments - ALL of these cars are devastating in the right hands.
The "engineer" in me has fallen in love with the light RX7, just for its dynamics. R34 is a sledgehammer of technology though, Evolutions seem to have stolen its crown today by continued development, but id still have an R34 for everyday living.
And maybe an RX project in the garage ;)

pointless arguing over the GTR & RX7. I'd like to see the Spirit R Type A RX7 Vs the top-spec R34 GTR with the EVO 8 & 9 involved. The story would be substantially different then. The refinements in the spirit R type A were substantial - circa 230kw, 1120kg, upgraded suspension and perfect 25% weight distribution at each wheel. The top spec R34 GTR had similar upgrades too. The Evo 8 & 9 are R34 GTR killers, so the contest would have been down to the FD and the Evos.

This is incorrect. I own a spririt R, type B (got kids). But I also looked at a Type A. The type A is only 10 kg lighter. Both the A and B are the same except the 2 seater (A) has plastic compartments behind the front seats where the 4 seater (B) has 2 more small seats with seatbelts. Also the type A has an Aluminum Floor mat (mat - for a lack of a better word) on the passenger side. Lastly, the type A had gunmetal BBS and mine are bright polished Aluminum BBS wheels (same design). That's all.

something to note: the R34 GTR as the driver said was "still very new" and he wasnt used to driving it. The RX7, had been out for quite a while already. Not saying the GTR should have one, just saying its something to keep in mind.

1 and 2) evo and gtr, 3)nsx, and last (depending on what cars are available) sti(heard it has too much oversteer) and rx-7.
but, with gaan-san driving, i expect a winner.

I hate to say it, but these were pretty much the best available cars at the time this video was filmed (roughly 1998-1999). The RX had to be a Type RS, there wasn't GT-R Nur spec yet, the NSX-R didn't exist, and the Evo 5 was the newest Lancer. I'm glad to see that the RX-7 proved its worth here. Although I'd like to have seen the Supra in this matchup too.

In Japan, 2002 Rx-7 cost me $43,000 (Y4,876,???) brand new with additional dealer markup. Here in Japan, R34 V-Spec back about 6 years ago was close to $65,000 with additional dealer mark-up.

the R34 had engine problems, according to Nakaya-san. had it not been for that and the fact that it was gan-san driving the FD3S, the R woulda won. the EVO is supposed to be the Tsukuba final weapon, but I suppose they need tuning...

This track has CORNERS. Corners require the car to turn and also have the ability to use its avaiable power to exit the corners. A '69 Hemi Daytona cannot an will never corner like these cars do. It probably would spin the tires exiting all the corners too. Last of all, the GT-R is a heavy car with the same power as the RX-7. On a tighter track like Tsukuba...it'll have trouble beating the RX-7.
