R.I.P. Billy Taylor, and as WKCR brilliantly said "our jazz universe has just become exponentially smaller with the passing of Billy Taylor."
His memorial is being held in at Riverside Church in Harlem, NYC on January 10th. Hope he continues to play those ivories and ebonies wherever he might be.
This is such an amazing video! I have always loved your videos, JVG. This is one of my favorites. Thank you so much for sharing! Where do you get these from anyway?
I've been a fan of Jazz since i was about 19. I played in band in HS & that started me on my journey. No music today can touch it. Coltrane, Miles, Wes, Monk,Martino, etc. Speaks to me like no other.
My husband, Bob Moore, was the bassist on a big band for 25 years. He once told a group of young bassists "Learn to play TEA FOR TWO in every key." They stared at him like,"duh?" They didn't understand why this exercise would improve their musical skills.
jazz is an american art form. it's sad that the rest of the world appreciates it more than most of us do by now. Like vinyl, we need a mass revival in the special music.
Fabulous bunch of videos you posted with Billy Taylor "and friends". Not so many with this musician. Definitely young at that time and definitely brilliant. Thanks.
I was five when this was on. We watched Shows on a Philco tv. Thank you for showing so many awesome entertainers. And the lessons we learn. Blessings.

Such a wonderful, tasteful way of playing. Freedom to play your own melody over the cords. That is why jazz is so very appealing .Thanks for posting
