What a rare personality type to pursue this activity...I wonder what other commonalities these people share in their day 2 day lives; with their friends, family, relationships etc...truly bizarre. to look at it from the outside you'd think...yeah, 1 screw up amongst thousands, and youre dead....Umm...I'll give him about 4months to live max - and yet this is not the case! It's almost terrifying just to watch it.
@Fuzzelwuzzel You do understand that buttoned down people said the same thing about people who started climbing to begin with. This is what evolution is called. Just because it has become the norm to BASE jump, climb etc etc you think that the next step is crazy? You should have been born in the 40's shaking your fist at "those long haired louts". Seriously mate. If you think a person is "crazy" you should have nothing to do with EXTREME sports.
Beautiful, solid, then fail as the cameraman decided to zoom out to catch the potential fall and death bounces... completely dishonoing the climber's art by not allowing us to see it up close....
Impressive, talented, difficult. If that's what this guy wants to do with his life, then that's his business. Me, I have a wife and two kids. I love them more than an adrenaline rush and wouldn't want to do anything to leave them fatherless. That's where Dan Osman really didn't think straight.
You may already know this, but soloing was not what killed Dan Osman. He was killed WHEN HE USED A ROPE. Granted, he wasn't exactly using it for it's intended purpose (rope jumping) but still, soloing didn't kill Dan-O.
@RockstarHQ1 It's actually just risk * 1000, climbing with a rope is actually harder as you have the weight of the rope to account for, not to mention all the clip ins along the way.
@MisterTFK Yes climbing whit a rope is harder and not only because of the rope, the routes are much more tough. What I meth was that it`s much harder mentally
@absinthe5765 Although to most people not attaching a rope must seem insane, these free soloers want to achieve something more than just a difficult path. They want to prove to themselves that they do not need technology to achieve this. In a way they want to imitate animals, only relying on their strength and technique to survive. Andreas Proft shows this very well as he even climbs barefoot! (painful as hell when you need to stick your feet on really small holds)
hmmmmmm I think I left my wallet up there. girlfriend-" how you gonna get there babe" just wait here. " OMG are F*n kidding me!" few hrs later.. screaming up. Wait a minute I put your wallet in your my back pack. Guy- mumbles to himself I h8 her..
I am not trying to put a downer on this, but it is hardly an adrenilin rush. Im confident 99.9999% of all people who have ever free solo are familiar with the route they are doing.. infact so familiar that they could probably climb the route 5 times in a row on lead.
Why eople do this?, its a mixture of a show of confidence, a need to conquar and ofc.. to show off.
When people start free solo flashing anywhere close to their limit.. then you can call it ''for the adren rush''.
@ceebo100 Your confidence is misplaced. You seem to have never free-soloed, as you are missing a hardly describable feeling and replacing it with this gibberish, "Why eople do this?, its a mixture of a show of confidence, a need to conquar and ofc.. to show off."
@munkel002 Dont talk shit. All free solo is... is the ability to ignore the little voice in your head saying ''the hold is gune snap'' ''foot is gune slip'' ''gune miss the next dynamic''. It is simply DENIAL or if you prefere.. CONFIDANCE IN YOUSELF AND ROCK. Do not try and make out that it is some sort of spiritual experiance.. that is bs.
1. More holds that can break on a 5.6 than on a 13.
2. big toes go in finger pockets better than shoes.
3. It's not so much the adrenaline rush but the 'no adrenaline' rush that is the high. Free solo and fear don't mix. It takes the zone with no fear and only thinking about the up.
4. Its nice to leave the rest of the world and only think about one thing and it is in the present.
1. thats not always true that more holds break on 5.6 then a 13. iv never had a hold break on me tell i got up to the 5.10 areas. it just depends on the place you climb.
23. YES. the first time i did a freesolo i was amazed. it was just me and whats above, and the connection(if that makes sense). i got a adrenaline rush once i made it to the top of the climb
Wow.. that's awfully dangerous but also great to see that it is possible to override your normal limits. Personally i like climbing trees, also without ropes. It feels safe enough to me, those stones look a bit more 'unfriendly'
@johnvsk Climbing is not about comps. It's about pushing yourself to the edge of your own comfort zone and red lining what you once thought was impossible. Screw medals and trophies.

It's not getting addicted to it that kills you. It's when you ignore your own limits...and when you start listening to others tell you how good you are. @torgojr1 Yeah, it's a state of mind. A different way of looking at the world. Like a 'Zen' thing or something. I was a purist, though. I learned not to trust ropes and gear, and chalk was just another way to lose your grip, imo. (Oh, yeah, for the newbies: Always make sure there's an easy way down before you start your climb. BTDT. Kinda sucked.)
Sweaty palms is another way to lose your grip. You can climb without chalk to a certain grade, but there comes a point when it is absolutely necessary.
@wrb1957 its when you sneeze, like; ooh this looks like a good hold.... oh its not. ill just move my foot up to this ledge, let go with one hand and **ACHOOO** aaaaaagh
@wrb1957 Sage words that I hope people listen and pay heed to. It is imperative to have a great deal of respect for the mountain and know your own limits.
It's one thing knowing your limits but you can never know the limits of nature. What experienced climber hasn't had holds break off ? I've had holds in different strata, break off in each hand a second apart. In such circumstances, if you're free soloing, you die; if you're on trad or sport you might injure yourself; on top rope you laugh about it.
@sydneydoc The ropes gave you a false sense of security. You didn't test your hold before you put your weight on it, thus, you didn't 'know' the mountain. (geology is important, folks. So is weather and climate.) otoh, no matter my own experience with ropes and hardware (and with trusting other people on ropes), I allow others to use ropes if they wish. Freedom is kinda funny that way. If I value my own freedom, I must allow others the same freedom that I allow myself.
How do you safely put your full weight on a hold to test it in critical situations ? In my case, when the first (higher) hold broke, it put my full weight as an impact loading on lower the second hold, which then also broke ... just like unzippering a trad climb.
@sydneydoc See: Logical fallacies, under Hasty Generalization. I can offer anecdotes about the times that ropes and hardware failed me...but I never once failed myself while climbing a mountain. My own experience does not mean that other people shouldn't use ropes, if they so choose. If your purpose is to control others, you probably shouldn't be climbing stairs without adult supervision.
Ah, that's a truism ... if you'd failed yourself free solo, you wouldn't be replying.
I'm not criticising and I'd never try to control - each to his own thing. I know I'm not infallible and I have a wife and child as well as myself to think of
Climbing in general is less risky than pregnancy, anethesia, hang gliding or scuba. However, I think free solo would rank pretty high, accounting for 25% of climbing deaths ... at least it has a low injury rate :-)
Climbing alone and barefoot is also an accomplishment. My congratulations to the climber. I do not know if the track is 7b, 8a+ or 7c, the question is do the route without falling.
The record deserved images with the zoom during the entire route, what a shame not to have them!
If you want to visit my channel (rocabule) you will see many videos of climbing in Andalucia (Spain) which are recorded and assembled by Alicia (alijassa). You can also visit our blog climbing, aprietabicho. A greeting.
As far as I know that´s only the 2. free solo climb without shoes in this grade. Dani Andrada was the other one who did the same a couple of years ago.
Remember Derek Hersey!

A greeting.

Would take some guts - but just a matter of time till he ends up dead. Too many good climbers go this way :(

@smellybottompooface Everyone dies. You don't have to be a climber to do that.

As far as I know that´s only the 2. free solo climb without shoes in this grade. Dani Andrada was the other one who did the same a couple of years ago.
