A bus, given its size and its momentum, it just couldn't stop in time so in this situation, it is safer to just continue through the red light than to slam on the brakes and throw anybody forward and getting rammed in from the back by another car. The driver made the right decision in this case.
Yellow Light Phase was only 4 seconds. That is not enough time for a large vehicle to stop in time without causing trailing vehicles to crash into them -- or -- in the case of a bus -- from throwing most of the passengers out of their seats onto the floor.
From what I see in this video and my experience driving very large heavy vehicles (including a school bus) this driver was most likely past the "point of no return". Once you pass a certain point, it is safer to go through the intersection than it is to put your passengers on the floor or risk getting rear ended. Really drivers have to use their best judgement in these situations. Besides there is at least a 1 second delay between cycles where all lights in the intersection are RED just for this
Come on people, even if he/she had stopped the bus would be in the middle of an intersection. Besides trucks don't go from 0 to 50 in 1 second, and neither does any other vehicle so the bus wouldn't have been hit. I bet everyone commenting has gotten a ticket for some thing along these lines.
It is bad enough to act like this in your own private vehicle, but to do it while driving a bus full of youth is horrible. If I had kids on that bus, i would demand the drive be terminated immediately. It is dangerous and, t the very least, sets a terrible example to the youth that it is ok to act above the law with no reguard to ohter's safety.
lights are timed for cars? Seriously? Compare the slower speeds of the vehicles passing through the intersection before the bus to the clearly higher speed of the bus.
If school busses were too heavy to stop for traffic lights then they wouldn't be on the street. Get real.
Red lights are timed for cars - cars will be able to stop in time, but buses are not. So you can either get through it (and hope) or slam on the brakes and knock over all your passengers. Your choice.
@weezcake In November people in Houston will vote on whether to keep the red light cameras or get rid of them. If your caught now you get a ticket mailed to you.
@weezcake I totally agree with your statement although I will lean a little to the way of I believe the school bus was the victim of the unfortunate red light trap.
@weezcake go thru a red light and HOPE???? You have up to 20 CHILDREN in there and ur worried about children being knocked around by sudden stopping?!?!?!?!?!?! U obviously don't have children. I'm sorry I'd rather my kid come home w/ a tiny lil bruise from a sudden stop than my kid not coming home at all cause cause some truck rain into his school bus
@texasboy5680 Have you driven a bus? Exactly. I drove part time in college and now I teach middle school students. Yes, either way it sucks, but if you haven't actually driven something that large or heavy in service, it's difficult to assess the situation.
Yep all lights should have countdown's on the light or at least crosswalks. Whenever an area had a crosswalk countdown timer I would use that to tell if a red was coming and slow down early.
They really need to add visual countdowns right next to the traffic lights so big trucks and busses can get a heads up. My van's brakes are VERY expensive, and I HATE IT when I have to run a reddie because I can't stop in time when the light turns yellow. It's either that, or slam on the brakes.
I know people that drive buses.. They are told that if they are that close to the light and it turns red don't try to stop. Although I can see their problem, they coulda slowed down way before they even got close to the white line.
I do it all the time in a 65-foot, 80,000-lb truck, if i feel i cant stop in time. its not most lights, its just about all traffic lights are timed for cars and not trucks or busses.

yea, let me see you try to stop a 16,000 pound vehicle in like .5 seconds and trying not to injure the several young students.

This bus driver did nothing wrong or non-typical.

That bus had more than enough time to stop if it wasn't speeding.

@weezcake Knock over your passengers? With my luck I'd accidentally put one through a windshield.. fuck that I'd rather run the light..

That was close... It was still yellow when the bus crossed the white line. Though, the driver should've tried to stop. That's my 2 cents.

No he didn't...
But even so... most yellow lights are timed for smaller vehicles.
I drive a 45 foot bus, and there are times I have to hit my horn as I blow a red- or slam on my brakes and be half in the intersection.
kenyoung1981 2 years ago
yes he did. Stop the video at :04 you will see clearly that this bus did run the red light.
compwhiz2000 2 years ago
Uh... was that comment meant for me or 035577?
Cuz he definitely did run it.
I stopped it like you said at :04 and can see the bus before the white line, with a red light.

yeah it was meant for 03557. Sorry. My mistake.

I'm actually gonna be starting trucking school within a couple weeks. The pay is WAY better than buses.
