  • No need for the hat to hide your self. I appreciate what you are doing because I have an Industrial music project, and I am always looking for tips and advice. So thank you for the video and please keep making more.

  • I Just picked up an se-50, And I cant figue out how to use the pitchshift effects 112 and 113. 112 makes me sound like a chipmunk, How do you get an octave up, and an octave down in unison?

  • @devilsphrygian From the screen for 112 P.SHIFTER, press the Parameter Up arrow twice, it will say P.SHIFTER 1 at top and PITCH with a number to the right on the bottom. Then press the Value button up or down to make it so that the pitch is +1. Then hit the Parameter Up arrow again (7 times) until the top shows P.SHIFTER 2 with PITCH and a number on the bottom. Make this pitch -1 using the Value bottons. And continue doing like you did above, making pitch 3 be 2, and pitch 4 be -2. should work!

  • Great demo and explanation! Thanks for the 411! ;)

  • nice job,man

  • If you wouldn't mind, cause I'm starting to get into vocals synths midi etc, could you go through the whole set up on that rack in the video, just for reference for anything I might add to my set up in the near future. Great video btw, cleared up alot of things.

  • I have no knowledge with vocal processors, would I have a chance at setting this up with a mic?

  • @Braleven You might be able to figure out ways to get strange sounds without an FX processor, but to get the pitch shifted sound you will need a processor. Sometimes you can find them cheap on ebay, or craigslist. Also, if you find any cheap guitar pedals, they can work for basic effects like reverb.

  • @lotusboy101 Sweet, thanks a lot

  • I typically use a pitchshifter, some reverb, and a digital delay. The delay gives my voice a very clangy metallic twinge to it.

  • Pretty neat. I usually put my voice through a harsh and wide 6-voice chorus, let the high frequencies get through almost unprocessed and into a slight dist or lofi. It gives me just what i want for my style. But i will definitely try this out on some parts since i learned something new. Always fun to try new things. Thanks.

  • Nice man I dig this demo. Keep with it and over time you will have something to show for it.

  • thank you very much! It's hard to find these damn SE-50... will try to do something similar via software effects!

  • Pretty good, but you need to work on yer scream a bit.

  • what do you use to make the pitch shifting? something like boss se-50 or what. it sounds great! nice video.

  • @krieg820 Yup, an SE-50 and also an SE-70. I kind of experiment between the two. I have found some neat new sounds that I will probably put on a new video eventually.

  • @lotusboy101 do you think it could work with an BOSS PS-5 super shifter pedal?? because i would like to make a voice like that but i dont want to spend that much

  • @krieg820 I looked online and the PS-5 pedal costs about $150, which is close to what the SE-50 costs, so I would still say get the SE-50, because it has more options, and many different parameters to edit. The PS-5 might work, but I don't know how many levels of pitch it can have. The SE-50 has 4 levels of pitch, which is about the right number you would need. Check ebay, or your local Craigslist classifieds for SE-50 or SE-70 units.

  • haha nice! i like it *.*

  • wow man, that really enlightened me alot. I was thinking maybe singing regular, or well, scream-singing then add pitch and stuff, but this really makes more sense than what I was thinking. haha ^^

Hope you get good at vocals :)

  • great video;)

  • @MusicWeltenSchmerz Thanks!

  • @darylmontes555 That is why I specified several times in the Description, AND in the video that I am NOT a vocalist or singer, and that I am NOT planning to be in any band. Maybe try reading/paying more attention next time. Of course, your goal was to be inflammatory, so it probably wouldn't matter if you read the Description. You are the first negative comment I have had since this video was uploaded many months ago. If you absolutely MUST be judgmental, at least say something constructive.

  • @InnocentzRaptor Yeah, with Ableton or something like FLStudio you can probably just use VST effects, but I am interested in a live setting, and I don't want to have to buy a $3000 Mac. I like the look and feel of old hardware too. It's just got a grit and boxyness to it that really gives off an oldschool 80's/90's industrial vibe. Modern bands are like a singer, and a couple of guys on Macs. It just looks TOO clean to me!

  • Dude sweet.. I can scream a bit like Dani Filth, I have a pretty good range but this'd help a lot. How much do you think this costs man?

  • It can cost quite a bit if you don't already have some gear. The main things you need are a mic, amp, speakers, and then an FX unit to process your vocals. I used three different ones in this vid. BOSS SE-50 and SE-70, and then an Alesis FX thing. The SE-50 is a good basic FX processor. They run anywhere from 75 to 150 dollars. Never pay more than that though. Sometimes they sell for too much on ebay.

  • @lotusboy101

Alright thanks for the tip. What do you mean speakers though? I use my mic through my guitarists 2nd amp, it's got a lot of distortion but sounds shitty lol. But wouldn't the speakers be in the amp?

  • Oh, well with guitar cabinets, the amp is built in, so the sound gets amplified and sent right out the speaker cabinet. But with PA speakers or concert/DJ speakers they often come as just a speaker and you have to run your audio through an amp that is a separate box before running it to the speakers. So when I said speakers, I just meant PA type speakers. These days alot of companies make powered speakers that have amps built in, just like guitar amps, but there is a difference between the two.

  • @lotusboy101

Oh alright, I'm kinda new to vocal gear shit, I've been focused on drums mainly lately. So does it matter if I have an amp or PA speakers and an audio box?

  • If you want sound that is clearer than a guitar amp, you would need to either get some loudspeakers (also called PA speakers) and an amp that goes with them to power them, or some speakers that come with the amp built in. They are usually called "powered speakers". Behringer makes some of those, but they are really expensive.

  • @lotusboy101

Okay, cool thanks. I'll get some loudspeakers and an amp to power them then. Now, I just need to find a good deal on craigslist or ebay or something for the mixers and the FX vocal processor thing right?

  • yup! You can get smaller mixers with 4 channels for around 60 bucks new, like the Behringer ones. But you can find larger ones for ok prices on craigslist or ebay.

  • @lotusboy101

Hmm alright man thanks alot for the advice.

  • Oh yeah! There are some free easy to use VSTs you can download to do pitch shifting. Search google for KVR audio, and there will be a forum/website by that name. Once there search their VST search engine for either Mad Shifta, or ShifterBank. (I prefer shifter bank). Then once you find it just download it to your VST plugin folder for FL Studio and you will be able to use it as a plugin effect on vocal tracks.

  • Great demo, this stuff is so obscure--it's been DIY for the life of these genres, and you generally only figure out how to create the staple sounds of this music by A. experimenting endlessly or B. having someone teach you--which is unlikely to happen. Some might say that is the best way to go, but I went 25 years before finding out how to achieve certain vocal effects, and THAT is fucking ridiculous. Your descript gets my full respect too.

  • Thanks! yeah I have the same problem of not being about to learn correct vocal skills very easily. I have the two DVDs by Melissa Cross and the first one helped learn to breath correctly. The second one should help get the high pitched screams that I want, but I have not watched it yet. I think I'll just have to experiment and hope for the best. If all else fails I can just pitch shift the hell out of my voice! lol

  • great!!!

  • If you could show how Ministry style vocal effects are achieved, I'll love you.

  • saw your compressor running at the bottom half of your rack. Which model?

  • It's an Alesis 3630. Quite an old model I think. From the late 80s or early 90s. I got it when I bought my rack from a guy. He sold some old rack gear with it and the compressor was one of the things available.

  • Right on, I have one of those also. They do the job, you know? I'd like a Behringer model though, nice step up without killing my wallet!

  • So educational! @____@ Thanks for the lesson.

  • what the hell is aggrotek?

  • From an online description: Aggrotech (also known as hellektro, Terror EBM, and Techno Body Music) is an evolution of electro-industrial and dark electro with a strong influence of techno that first surfaced in the mid-1990s. Its sound is typified by harsh song structures, aggressive beats and lyrics of a militant, pessimistic or explicit nature. Typically, the vocals are distorted and pitch-shifted to sound hoarse, harsh and synthetic. A couple of aggrotech bands I like are Agonoize, & DYM

  • Yo! Thanks for the vid! :D

But what are the third and final effect?

  • The third thing I added on was a chain of effects on the BOSS SE-70. The SE-70 has a few programs on it that are actually several effects chained together. That particular one had soem reverb, some rotation/modulation that was supposed to create an "organ" sound, and some extra pitch shifting, plus a little delay. So on the SE-70 there are a few programs where you have several effects in one that you get to tweak so that they give you the sound you want.

  • This was very VERY helpful... I only used a grain delay effect in Ableton to get my sound, which works AMAZING. I think you ahve to couple the Pitch Shifter with a really maxed out chorus, like max out the speed and depth, as well as the wet mix. Thats what I've been doing. Actually... If you do just an octave pedal and a chorus pedal, you can pretty much achieve the same effect for pretty cheap.

  • I've been doing music for a long time. I always thought they just used distortion, coupled with reverb and other effects. I don't think you should hide your face, but to each his own. Pitch shifting huh? I've try it just for kicks. It doesn't sound right to me though, at least how you have it there.

  • well I wasn't using the full set up that the bands use. I just wanted to give the basic idea of how they do it. Psyclon Nine in particular used the BOSS SE-50 which is one of the processors that I used in this video. I cannot scream as well as the bands I was referring to. That's why it doesn't sound quite right. Listen to early Psyclon Nine songs and you can hear the SE-50 pitch shifter. It's very obvious once you learn what it sounds like.

  • wld you know how columbine gets that effect or how i can get a cheap vocal synthisizer? that actaully sounds good lol

  • I am not sure, but it sounds like they mix and match several different effects to get a washy sound over the main vocals. I would guess that on a song like "You Should Be Ashamed" by them, they use a little distortion, with some kind of modulation or phaser over it to make it sound kinda washed out. I don't hear pitch shifting, but they use so many different types of effect on their album that it's hard to tell what all they use. Just look for cheap Alesis effects rack units, or Boss SE-50/SE-70

  • I was wondering how hocico did that....

  • it reminds me of mr blobby O.0

but still very nive effects :D

  • thanx for doing this! i did a recording session the other day, and the artist wanted that effect and i had no clue..... so once again thanx

  • Awesome! I'm glad it helped. I plan on doing some more examples eventually.

  • Despite what you may think Nero actually doesnt use any effects nor does K.Bathory of Dawn Of Ashes. Its not hard to do those screams naturally as many of those bands used to sing in black metal bands so they have mastered the screams without the use of effects. My band's singer sounds exactly like Nero and we use no effects.

  • Actually P9 used a BOSS SE-50 early on. They have openly said this and it's no big deal. They even sold a used BOSS SE-50 on Ebay with some other old merchandise a few months back. The item was listed as "Psyclon Nine Vocal Effects BOSS SE-50" under the xbrokenxpromisesx ebay account which is run by P9 themselves. They used the pitch shifting on Divine Infekt and INRI. Crwn Thy Frnicatr is the first tour that did not use effects much So you are correct in that Nero does not CURRENTLY use effects

  • Haha... you're right... BUT he only sold his SE-50 since he got the SE-70. ;D and he yes, he does in fact use effects.

  • i like when you're saying "this is my voice, it sounds really wierd..... reeeeeally wierd..... woooooo" hahahaha cute

  • Did you notice right after that when I was like "It's meeee Giiiiiiiirrrrrrrr, I'm really annoyiiiiiing!!!"

  • lol well you are annoying ^.^

Fwahahahaha! Come on you know I like being mean.... especially to you :)

  • *cry* lol

  • thats bull shit dude. if your going to do something, you shouldnt be ashamed. this was actually really educational. iv always wondered how that stuff was done.

  • lol, it was sort of a joke, because I mean, everyone that knows me would already recognize me and my screenname. It was supposed to be kinda like how superman puts and glasses and everyone suddenly thinks he's Clark Kent. haha

  • lol

  • LoLeRCoAsTeR!!!!!!!!!!!111

  • Fascinating! :D
