The starvation of 5.7 million German civilians in western occupation zones of Germany between April 1945 and March 1947 was a crime too. And committed by the western Allies, not by the Communists themselves. Rather, the famine in the west zones, drove many German civilians towards the Soviets. In the Soviet (later GDR - DDR) zone, there was slightly more food. But USSR was criminal indeed.

@VictorWasechkin The Katyn Massacre order of 1940 was official policy, an official command. The Soviet Army is widely known among Eastern and Central Europeans as criminals against humanity and war criminals. The deportations, NKVD executions, partisan crimes, mass murder of innocent civilians (incl. ethnic Germans and ethnic Hungarians) cannot be summarized even in a few words. I never wrote that the USA were innocent. Why do you resort to anti-American claims?

@VictorWasechkin I would be the last to justify the CIA operations (like current Arab revolutions in Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Tunisia) and CIA biological warfare testing on civilians. The Vietnam War and the Korean War were wars defending civilians from Communist advance, sponsored by Mao and Stalin and their right-hands. These were brutal wars with many war crimes (both by Communists and Americans), but just wars.

The Soviet terror was universal, whereas after March 1947, the CIA in Western and Central Europe (apart from some cruel human experiments of the Mengele myth type) did enslave millions to death labour camps. As the KGB (NKVD) did.

THAT "side" was wrong. Building monuments to Bandera and waving UPA flags today is just sick...I have never met a German yet who would advocate for Nazi Germany...As far as "the Soviets" my grand uncle volunteered when he was 17 in 1941 and was wounded in a battle. He never was a Communist.

Bandera is nobody, but a criminal coward, unfortunatelly young Ukrainians have noone else to associate with. They won nothing with Germans, in 1939 Red Ruś was added to U-SSR, in 1941 to GG and again.
He did the right thing, defended his country, respect.

In XIc there wasn`t even a Russian colony on a river Moscow, it was founded in 1147, right? The "Kievian" Ruś was a sesonal state, Varingian colony. Already Yaroslav the "Wise" divided it, to be "united" again in... XIXc. Red Ruś was never "united" before 1939.
Note, political divisions are different than etchnic or cultural.

Founder of Moscow Yuri Dolgorukiy (also Prince of Kiev ) ruled in Vladimir-Suzdal which succeeded Kiev as major power and from which the Duchy of Moscow arose. Kiev was destroyed in 1240.
If you are interested in Russian history I suggest Wikipedia. As far as culture- Google any city from those maps and look at the churches...

Ok, but he was a Grand Duke of Kiev for 2 years. Ruś was divided already, Dukes of Kiev were changing so fast you can get confused. There were stronger Duchies, depends when, but for example Galich-Vollhynia was quite a strong one.
How Vladimir - Suzdal suceeded Kiev? Then already Horde was in charge, they were giving a title of a "Duke of Vladimir"... and killing some humiliated Dukes in the process.

@MaximusProteus The rise of Moscow and gathering of Russian lands occurred not too many "ages" after the fall of Kiev in 1240 - under Ivan III (1462–1505) who was the first to have the title "of all Rus". He also ended the yoke of the mongol Golden Horde. Other major cities were weaker. Novgorod even wanted to ally with Casimir IV of Poland (Grand Prince of Lithuania) but that would be an apostasy from Orthodox faith....Ivan III did what Louis XI did in uniting France in 15th century.

Anyway Duke of Kiev was no more the "Grand", for Mongols "Grand" was Duke of Vladimir. If Ivan III or IV ended the yoke, or it the Horde ended, they still were confused between Kazan and Crimea for a while. Already an apostasy? Novogrod was Republic, like Poland, but not a monarchic one.
