@SHMIBLY I do not cover my tank in the top area. An open tank is always best for more gas exchange, but if you have fish jumping out, you may want to look into a glass hood. They sell these in local pet stores as well as online. Good luck.
First off, Great Videos! I have been patiently putting together a 115 gallon reef tank. I have been using your videos as a reference for all my questions and concerns. I also purchased an ecotech mp40, just curious but what mode is yours set on? I know it has to do with personal preference but I like how yours creates those waves in your tank. Thanks
@sakudi I have tried all the settings and love them all however, I find that my corals and over all setup based on the deep sand bed respond best to short pulse mode. hope this helps, good luck.
Hey Steelo. Just wanted to ask you about your flame angel. Are you worried about him nipping and corals or clam? Cause I've been really wanting one but i have hard they nip and corals and clams. I dont have sps, mostly lps and softies. thanks
@184445 Its a hit or miss with these fish. The ones I have had in my tanks have never nipped on my corals, mostly because I keep them well fed. But I have heard horror stories of some that continuously nip at the corals. If you want this fish, you are just going to have to take your chances and get it, but use caution, cause if it nips at everything, you may have to remove it. Hope this helps. good luck.
Well it's been up for 5 monthes my corals or huge so like the water is all fine but one thing is allll my worms died off I think because I haven't seen this in like 3 weeks
@Breyyyy2012 Might just be blue green algae which is somewhat normal and easily cleaned off the rocks, or if your tank just finished the cycle, it could be diatoms. Good luck.
How were you able to attach and keep the Duncan in that position, looks like it just grew right out of the rock. Well nevermind, you just answered my question in the video as I'm typing, saying how to frag and what glue you use. LOL
@dhall78 I glued it to the rock, and over time, the glue (which is a clear color) starts to grow coraline algae over it and makes it look like its naturally growing from the rock. If you visit some of my older videos when I first got this coral, you can see the glue on the coral which is not visible today. A video on this subject will come in the near future.
@G4m1nguru Because I wanted a splash of blue on the other side and did not want to frag the old one :) I wanted 2 big pieces on both ends of the tank and fragging one only to wait until it grows was not going to work out for me.
I wanted to send you a comment to let you know how much you have inspired and helped me start my 10 and 50 gallon reefs. I have been following your videos and use your advice to get mine going. It's been almost 8 months and my setup is doing great! My next additions will be a toadstool and some more soft corals. The hobby is such a rewarding one and once things are running well, it is fun to scope out the next challenge. I always look forward to your next video and appreciate your tour.!
@HtownJennings Awesome! Love to hear success stories, especially when it comes to me inspiring a fellow hobbyist. More than glad to hear it. Keep up the good work :)
steelo I love your tank! def love neon hammer coral and the trumpet corals, soooo cool! i was wondering tho how many fish do youu have in your system? i saw the tang and flame angle, do you still have the clowns?
@FishGUitaz0z The clowns are there. Wait till the closeup of the Rose Anenome and you will see them. They stay there and never leave that spot. A few more fish will be added in the future, but barely a few. This is a coral dominated tank :)
Hey newyorksteelo iam fairly new to the reef hobby, I have everything i pretty much need to start my reef. All iam waiting for is my RO which is a christmas gift..lol..i have seen i think most of all you videos if not all of them..lol.. Have you done a video which includes corals for beginners...Some thing i can start with just to get my reef going . thanks
@rsxmel11 I recommend you start with fish, learn the chemistry better, and in 6 months or more, you can move on to corals. Some great beginner corals are all softies such as leathers, mushrooms, and zoas. Good luck and welcome to the hobby.
@shakez1 A chiller does not heat a tank buddy, but instead, cools the water when too hot. A heater on the other hand heats the water when too cold. A good heater to use is the JBJ True Temp Heating system of which I have used for over a year on my nano system and still works like a charm.
@MasterTechRepair I guess I missed it for being at work. Have not been down there for a few months now. Going to have to go and take a look at what they have, maybe this weekend :)
@ReefOctopus2012 A refugium must be lighted when it contains Macro Algae bit its not an absolute necessity when it comes to a sump area with just live rock.
@brinks128 Not in my tanks, no, but there is a local fish store here in Yonkers NY that has successfully rid them by taking out the rock and burning them with a lighter. It prevents them from reproducing and I was there when they were burning the little buggers lol. I have never had these pests in all my years in the hobby. I buy quality live rock from reputable dealers and have been blessed with never having to deal with them. Thank god for that too :)
@UltimateKeylogger If you did not set up your system similar to mines in which I have natural ways of removing nitrates (Deep Sand Bed and Refugium Lighted 24/7), large water changes and not overfeeding are going to be your only hope for the high nitrates. Good luck.
@steelo i have a frogspawn coral it extends huge with no problem, my tank parameters are perfect but the flesh is starting to receide upward on the skeleton of the coral , do u have a suggestion why thats happening? Thanx
@Breyyyy2012 SO long as you keep the chemistry where they need to be, the corals will grow. The more intense the light, the faster they grow, but this is not the case with all corals. In most cases, its all about the water parameters. Good luck.
@Breyyyy2012 Keep it at that level and be patient. Coraline algae should take off and start growing to the point that you will want it to stop growing. In my case, I want coraline to grow on the rocks only, so I have to scrape the back of the tank when coraline grows there every once in a while. Good luck.
Sorry um ok I have a 55 gallon saltwater tank 89 pounds of live rock in how do I get coralline algae like the purple stuff I have it on one rock and what's the best way to clean the sand I can send pics if it helps to answer my question
@Breyyyy2012 If your live rock has it, it should grow in time. All you need to do is maintain the calcium levels between 420 to 450 ppm and the coraline algae growth should take off in 3 to 6 months once the tank reaches stability. If what you have is a shallow sand bed, best way to clean it is to use a siphon hose and siphon the sand while doing a water change. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Nice video Steelo! Was going to ask, you probably already answered this, but just in case i'll ask again. What specific brand/model 90 gallon tank do you have? I really dig it.
@rdarellano Please visit my video titled "Reef Aquarium Tech Tank Review" to find the answers you seek. You may also want to visit "Reef Aquarium Oak Wood Stand Review" as well. Thanks for stopping by and for commenting.
@cali2400 I had to replace the stand a year ago and so all the fish, live rock, live sand, and my old DIY sump refugium were sold to a guy that had a 180g system. I then rebuild this 90g tank to what you see today :)
@Arrecifeshaka The link is in the description box of this video buddy. When you are watching the video, below it is a description of the video itself, if you click to see this description you will see the link.
Another great video. I think I might do a tour of my tank too. This hobby is so rewarding. I am battling nitrates myself but nothing a few water changes can't fix lol
I am setting my 75 gal using all the info I get from your videos. Keep up the good work!!!
A couple questions if u have time. Are gobbies and bennies ok in a dsb? How about hermits, strawberry and berry crabs? Would they eat all the fauna, worms and copedos etc. Thanks in advance.
@Arrecifeshaka Thanks. Greatly appreciate the positive feedback. Not a good idea to add these to a DSB. Please visit the description box of my video "How To Setup A Saltwater Aquarium Deep Sand Bed" to find a link to a great article that discusses the addition of these animals to a deep sand bed.
Cool. Thanks this coral is huge has about 25 heads and i only payed $80 its a beautiful piece as soon as it opens ima post a pic on your youtube page. Thanks for ur knowledge, and fast reply!! Keep on reefing!!
Hey steelo ! Quick question i just bought a pulsing xenia colony yesterday evening and today its slightly open. Just wanted to know how long dey take to fully open ? Thank you
@skullzz82 It takes time for new coral addition to acclimate. Could be by tomorrow, as much as it could take 2 weeks or more. Best thing to do it wait it out and find it a spot that is adequate for it to thrive. Good luck and be sure to let me know how this new coral addition turns out for you.
Ok thanks and I don't comment twice on purpose, I do it because the comment sectio is glitchy for my iPod, so therefore I comment twice because I think it hasn't posted :)
@shakez1 Sure it will be OK to use, not sure why you would need the ammonia media though. If you cycled your tank properly, and have adequate filtration, you only need to use carbon media, not carbon and ammonia media. Good luck.
@MTomkinson96 No, mushrooms attach to the rock by themselves. If you use super glue, you risk looking the coral. Place the mushroom on top of rubble rock and offer low flow. Within a couple of wees, it should attach itself to the rock if healthy. Good luck.
Hey nys, bought a mushroom coral today, can I use ordinary superglue to glue it on the rock? If not any other suggestions and can you do a video about how to place them? Thanks :)
I have something growing in my system. It clearish white in color and looks like a spider web it started in the refugium growing spots now its into main tank. I need help dont know if its good or bad??? Thanks...
@abreezeducttesting Please visit my video titled "How To Aquascape A Reef Aquarium" and visit the description box to find a link that shows photos and information on all live rock hitchhikers. You may find what you are looking for there. Good luck.
I have something growing in system , its a clearish white in color and looks like a web growing in little spots all over. I think it started from refuguim please help I don't know if its good or bad? Thanks ...
Steelo just wondering if you no much about berghia nudibranchs if they are good for a reef all I can find is that they can starve before they even eat all your aphasia
Dot believe in using chemicals
And if you see my nano reef vid it's very hard to work on the tank
@Keironkerri Never had this creature nor researched it so cannot comment much here. I will however take a look at your nano later on and leave a comment if need be. Good luck.
One of these days, I hope to have HALF the tank you do. Also- thanks for visually and verbally explaining everything that you're doing...it really helps.
Great video...this is why we all work so hard. A reef like this I think anyone can acheive if one really works at it. This is a great example of why we do this hobby. Thanks for showing it.
@ReefDVMs Thanks for the much appreciated feedback, and I totally agree with you here. This is totally doable by anyone that works hard at it. Took me 10 months to reach this point so patience is key. Thanks again :)
@Nickp5954 No need to be buddy. You have the ability to make a reef just like this one, if not better. All the information you need to achieve this is found on my videos. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting :)
why would anyone dislike this? this guy is the reason why I setup my saltwater tanks and I am very thankful for the info and tips. Thanks newyorksteelo
Hey steelo whens the next vid btw do you rinse out packaged live sand?! I know some people do and some dont becuz ur washn out bacteria but how do u do it??
@shakez1 Next video should be up soon. Do not rise out packaged live sand or you will be killing the sand. Simply add it and wait till the silt settles.
My only thoughts on keeping the refugium is for providing my critters a safe haven to grow as my mandarin depends on them, but either way I'll hold onto my skimmer until I can reach definitive results. The great thing about you Steelo is that you have always had time to help your followers learn. I appreciate you, and anxiously wait for your next video.
@papablev Thanks man, and wise decision to hold on to the skimmer. This is why I made that video on "Refugiums VS Protein Skimmers - How They Work", and clearly stated in that video that I would not run a reef without either of these filtration methods. Both have their benefits and disadvantages but when put to work together, its an awesome combination. In the absence of a refugium, I would instead set up the scrubber, but will always, and I mean always have and recommend a skimmer.
O.k. I apologize, that was a cheap shot. I've only been in the SW hobby for 3 years. You have more experience than I do as well as I know that you research this hobby in great depth. I just thought you may have researched ATS systems. With that being said, by your own admission a protein skimmer will only remove 30% of organics. The claim is that an ATS system will remove all phosphates and nitrates without removing protein, ie. food. The idea sounds worth researching.
@papablev I accept that and respectfully apologize to you as well. Yes the skimmer removes 30 to 35% of organics at any given time, key word here is "at any given time", due to battling it out with bacteria. The refugium will eventually consume all, but my point to you is that both the Algae Scrubber and refugium use the same principle, and so both are the same, only set up differently, but they cannot substitute replacing a skimmer because the skimmer will remove the nutrients quicker.
thanks for the shout out...."Guys a little out there" eh? Step over to the fresh side ;) anyone can keep ONE tank, try 6 ;P appreciate the love man. Great tank and its only gonna get better...I hope you spread knowledge in the FTTV chat!
@Dustinsfishtanks lol, what I meant by out there is that you are just out there when it comes to your videos, meaning straight forward and dont hold back for nada lol, (cursing in the video and the such). Your videos are slowly inspiring me to get back into freshwater and I may hit you up for some plants of which I would gladly pay you for, so long as you send me quality such as you have in your videos. Keep up the great work :) Oh and by the way, I have 2 tanks not one lol.
Another great video! Quick Question. I am currently changing my diy refugium into a diy refugium/ATS (algae turf scrubber), and was wondering if you have ever experimented with this type of filtration, or if you think that it could potentially add benefits above a protein skimmer.
@papablev Why replace a refugium with an algae scrubber if both serve the same purpose? Also, there is no filtration out there today that can substitute what a protein skimmer can do. The refugium will do the same when it comes to removing nutrients, but the refugium takes time to grow algae and consume the nutrients, whereas the skimmer will remove them immediately. Please watch my video titled "Refugiums VS Protein Skimmers - How They Work" to understand the difference. Good luck.
@newyorksteelo The plan isn't really to replace the fuge as much as it is to add to it. I rspect your opinion, but I guess if you have never tried a scrubber, you would'nt know if it would have comparable or better results as a skimmer would. I say this with the utmost respect though. Your videos have been alot of help to me.
@papablev Thanks for sharing that and for the respect. One thing to keep in mind here is that it comes down to common sense. I mean just ask yourself, what i an algae turf scrubber, what does it do, and how does it work? If you answer yourself this question and then do the same for the skimmer, you shall find the answer you seek and come to the conclusion that my response to you is the correct one. I mean it really just comes down to common sense. No need to try either of them to realize it.
@newyorksteelo O.K. amongst all of the bad grammar, I believe you just implied that I have no common sense. I only seek knowledge and the best way of doing things, but thank you for your time.
@papablev OMG no buddy. That is not what I meant. I simply was trying to get you to analyze it as I did, and also respond to your statement that just because I haven't tried it, I can't possibly know what I am talking about. I mean just tell me that I am wrong here if that is what you believe and I will accept that. Now I am being insulted on grammar. Ayaiyai! But it really just comes down to common sense :)
@UltimateKeylogger I will try and see if I can get my hands on some but these, like the xenias I have in there now grow like a weed everywhere which is one of the reasons why I only have one and have to constantly frag the one I have there now.
I got my strawberry shortcake this week too. Only 50$ for two small branches! As far as "rare" sps I also got the purple bunsai, aussie icefire echinata (the nicest of them) and the pink lemonade. My LFS also got some red dragon I'll get my hands on soon! At least I have some big colonies and won't have to wait for them to get big so I can have a full grown reef!
@matman377 $50 bucks for the Strawberry is a great deal. I paid 79 for mines and did not get what I was hoping for, but on a positive note, I noticed today that my Strawberry is regaining color and coloring up nicely. The Ice Fire is also my favorite. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for yours? And do you have any videos on your reef?
@newyorksteelo I got the echinata for 50$ also (coral prices are lower in Canada, but fish prices much higher it seems). I have some small videos I made some time ago, but they don't reflect the tank very well. I'm uploading a new one I made a few days ago to kill time hehe. I should probably do a video of the full tank soon enough. Maybe a montage of some pictures I took with the macro objective
@matman377 Wow, where is this place and is it an online vendor? Cause the Strawberry I can understand being lower but the Ice FIre? Are you sure it's not a Hawkins Echinata? Man you got to put me up to that site with those incredible prices :)
Great work. Dustin got me into planted tanks. If you can get corals rolling you'll have no problems with a fully planted tank. Biggest challenge is phosphates and keeping them in check so you don't get hair algae and other types. They really wreck havoc on planted tank quickly. Looking forward to seeing what you do and I'm on fishtanktv as well. All the best.
@paducahFishFan Yeah. Going to be setting up a planted tank soon and may buy some of his plants. He has some amazing planted tanks indeed. The phosphates issue applies to reefs as well. Thanks for stopping by :)
@Rolandofishtank You have been on one the ones that subscribed to me wen I first started uploading videos. Thanks man. DO know that I greatly appreciate your approval :)
@johnysasha87 Thanks man. Hoping to add a few more pieces to the reef, including a Bubble Coral, a Brain Coral and a few more SPS's. Appreciate the feedback.

What happens with the moorish idol?
cali2400 3 months ago
@cali2400 I had to replace the stand a year ago and so all the fish, live rock, live sand, and my old DIY sump refugium were sold to a guy that had a 180g system. I then rebuild this 90g tank to what you see today :)

Great video. Your tank is looking awesome!!!
Arrecifeshaka 3 months ago
@Arrecifeshaka Thanks. Greatly appreciate the positive feedback. Not a good idea to add these to a DSB. Please visit the description box of my video "How To Setup A Saltwater Aquarium Deep Sand Bed" to find a link to a great article that discusses the addition of these animals to a deep sand bed.

Hey steelo ! Quick question i just bought a pulsing xenia colony yesterday evening and today its slightly open. Just wanted to know how long dey take to fully open ? Thank you
skullzz82 3 months ago
@skullzz82 It takes time for new coral addition to acclimate. Could be by tomorrow, as much as it could take 2 weeks or more. Best thing to do it wait it out and find it a spot that is adequate for it to thrive. Good luck and be sure to let me know how this new coral addition turns out for you.

Steelo is it ok to use marineland's carbon wih ammonia blend for reef tanks
shakez1 3 months ago
@shakez1 Sure it will be OK to use, not sure why you would need the ammonia media though. If you cycled your tank properly, and have adequate filtration, you only need to use carbon media, not carbon and ammonia media. Good luck.

Hey nys can you use ordinary superglue to place a mushroom coral on a rock? Thanks :)
MTomkinson96 3 months ago
@MTomkinson96 No, mushrooms attach to the rock by themselves. If you use super glue, you risk looking the coral. Place the mushroom on top of rubble rock and offer low flow. Within a couple of wees, it should attach itself to the rock if healthy. Good luck.

@shakez1 Next video should be up soon. Do not rise out packaged live sand or you will be killing the sand. Simply add it and wait till the silt settles.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
My only thoughts on keeping the refugium is for providing my critters a safe haven to grow as my mandarin depends on them, but either way I'll hold onto my skimmer until I can reach definitive results. The great thing about you Steelo is that you have always had time to help your followers learn. I appreciate you, and anxiously wait for your next video.
papablev 3 months ago
@papablev Thanks man, and wise decision to hold on to the skimmer. This is why I made that video on "Refugiums VS Protein Skimmers - How They Work", and clearly stated in that video that I would not run a reef without either of these filtration methods. Both have their benefits and disadvantages but when put to work together, its an awesome combination. In the absence of a refugium, I would instead set up the scrubber, but will always, and I mean always have and recommend a skimmer.

newyorksteelo 3 months ago
The claim is that an ATS system will remove all phosphates and nitrates without removing protein, ie. food. The idea sounds worth researching.
papablev 3 months ago
@papablev I accept that and respectfully apologize to you as well. Yes the skimmer removes 30 to 35% of organics at any given time, key word here is "at any given time", due to battling it out with bacteria. The refugium will eventually consume all, but my point to you is that both the Algae Scrubber and refugium use the same principle, and so both are the same, only set up differently, but they cannot substitute replacing a skimmer because the skimmer will remove the nutrients quicker.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
thanks for the shout out...."Guys a little out there" eh? Step over to the fresh side ;) anyone can keep ONE tank, try 6 ;P appreciate the love man. Great tank and its only gonna get better...I hope you spread knowledge in the FTTV chat!
Dustinsfishtanks 3 months ago
@Dustinsfishtanks lol, what I meant by out there is that you are just out there when it comes to your videos, meaning straight forward and dont hold back for nada lol, (cursing in the video and the such). Your videos are slowly inspiring me to get back into freshwater and I may hit you up for some plants of which I would gladly pay you for, so long as you send me quality such as you have in your videos. Keep up the great work :) Oh and by the way, I have 2 tanks not one lol.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
Another great video! Quick Question. I am currently changing my diy refugium into a diy refugium/ATS (algae turf scrubber), and was wondering if you have ever experimented with this type of filtration, or if you think that it could potentially add benefits above a protein skimmer.
papablev 3 months ago
@papablev Why replace a refugium with an algae scrubber if both serve the same purpose? Also, there is no filtration out there today that can substitute what a protein skimmer can do. The refugium will do the same when it comes to removing nutrients, but the refugium takes time to grow algae and consume the nutrients, whereas the skimmer will remove them immediately. Please watch my video titled "Refugiums VS Protein Skimmers - How They Work" to understand the difference. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
@newyorksteelo The plan isn't really to replace the fuge as much as it is to add to it. I rspect your opinion, but I guess if you have never tried a scrubber, you would'nt know if it would have comparable or better results as a skimmer would. I say this with the utmost respect though. Your videos have been alot of help to me.
papablev 3 months ago
@papablev Thanks for sharing that and for the respect. One thing to keep in mind here is that it comes down to common sense. I mean just ask yourself, what i an algae turf scrubber, what does it do, and how does it work? If you answer yourself this question and then do the same for the skimmer, you shall find the answer you seek and come to the conclusion that my response to you is the correct one. I mean it really just comes down to common sense. No need to try either of them to realize it.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
@newyorksteelo O.K. amongst all of the bad grammar, I believe you just implied that I have no common sense. I only seek knowledge and the best way of doing things, but thank you for your time.
papablev 3 months ago
@papablev OMG no buddy. That is not what I meant. I simply was trying to get you to analyze it as I did, and also respond to your statement that just because I haven't tried it, I can't possibly know what I am talking about. I mean just tell me that I am wrong here if that is what you believe and I will accept that. Now I am being insulted on grammar. Ayaiyai! But it really just comes down to common sense :)

I got my strawberry shortcake this week too. Only 50$ for two small branches! As far as "rare" sps I also got the purple bunsai, aussie icefire echinata (the nicest of them) and the pink lemonade. My LFS also got some red dragon I'll get my hands on soon! At least I have some big colonies and won't have to wait for them to get big so I can have a full grown reef!
matman377 3 months ago
@matman377 $50 bucks for the Strawberry is a great deal. I paid 79 for mines and did not get what I was hoping for, but on a positive note, I noticed today that my Strawberry is regaining color and coloring up nicely. The Ice Fire is also my favorite. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for yours? And do you have any videos on your reef?
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
@newyorksteelo I got the echinata for 50$ also (coral prices are lower in Canada, but fish prices much higher it seems). I have some small videos I made some time ago, but they don't reflect the tank very well. I'm uploading a new one I made a few days ago to kill time hehe. I should probably do a video of the full tank soon enough. Maybe a montage of some pictures I took with the macro objective
matman377 3 months ago
