I didn't like the Master one bit in the first arc he was in EXCEPT for when it was Jacobi. The transition he made from being genius and do good Professor Yana to the evil Master was an awesome bit of acting. John Simm was too goofy the first time around to take seriously but when he mixed the goofy with the serious in the End of Time he was great too.

@TheMrwai6 um one question well multiple but they relate to one. isn't it in the comics/books/audio dramas, that the master from the movie was killed, then revived by the time lords for the time war. but once he found out about it part way into the war he ran away and used his fob watch to hide forever from well everything? and that's why he can regenerate without stealing a body from where Roger Delgado was the masters 13th regeneration so from then on he needed someone else's body to live

As an American, I can't say I've seen much of Jacobi's work, so I can't say who is better. But I prefer Simm's Master to an old Master. Jacobi wouldn't have been able to play the role of the Master as written, so I don't really understand the debate.

Let's put it this way; I had never seen John Simm before Doctor Who, and now I own at least one copy of everything I could get my hands on (still can't find episodes of Oasis).

@Kilmer5 I've first seen him in "I, Claudius" and than in "Dead Again" and than more. He is my favorite actor. You say you don't understand the debate. You see some of us think that Jacobi is a better actor. Plus Simm played him too silly while Jacobi could have been so scary and creepy and could follow the great Masters as Antony Ainley and Roger Delgado. I just didn't like Simm's master. Anyway if you've seen other Jacobi's works you would have known that mr. Jacobi can play anything!!!

Simm was asked to play the Master a certain way ... over-the-top crazy. Jacobi wasn't the right actor to play the Master as Russell T. Davies envisioned. You need to watch some of Simm's earlier work to see that he can play scary and creepy. The role of the Master is certainly not typical of his work.

Reread my post; I never said which actor is the better actor (but of course I have my preference, as do you).

They made him start out like the old Masters by using Jacobi, who did great. But as even the character said they wanted to change so that he could become the proper foil to the younger, witty Doctor. I'm just glad he was given a smooth transition through Jacobi instead of Simm just coming out of nowhere and probably pissing everyone off.

@Bottery Time Lords can choose what the next regeneration looks like. They can even change sex or look like a different alien species if wanted. The transition from Jacobi to Simm was more elaborate. The Master moved to the very end of time and wiped his own mind after pondering that the Time Lords would fall during the Time Wars. This is why the TARDIS didnt pick up any Time Lord life signs. After his memory was restored he was shot and chose a younger body by force of will pre-regeneration.

I like this Master best because he has less of a stiff upper-lip. He's melodramatic but without coming off as "campy." He's got a GREAT sense of style and manages to pull of his megalomaniac antics with a 21st century flair. Plus he has one heck of a taste in music.

I'm so conflicted about the John Simm Master. I love how he was portrayed (well, during the Mister Saxon arc anyway but the weird cannibal Master wasn't Simm's doing). He really gave me the impression that this was the Joker to the The Doctor's Batman. There are so many emotionless villains in Who that its nice to see someone just truly enjoying being evil. My main issue is that RTD's plot devices in the Master episodes are easily the worst of his entire run.

I love that scene with the gas, they wrote the master so well I think it was a retarded idea to kill the master at the end of these episodes and then bring him back as a weird robot thing. Same with the Daleks, I'm so happy Moffat finally decided to just bring them back full time because Russel T Davis had problems with killing off the villains every episode rathe than just letting them live sometimes so you don't have to come up with a ridic reason they're alive again.

For some reason, I found The Master extremely sexy. I'm not sure if it was because he was absolutely crazy, or maybe that he treated his wife so nice... as a villain. I half expected him to killer her or some sort during the episode... but no. But either way, it made me feel like a creep. :p I LOVE Doctor Who and I wish it had a larger fan base in America.
