yo no se si sea el mejor guitarrista tecnicamente hablando...pero para mi lo es por que cuando lo escucho tocar me eleva al cielo con sus melodias... take me to heaven DAVID...
One of my personal favorite Pink Floyd song. Dave Gilmour is a legend i like his work better than Eric Clapton and he is referred to as god. I also think Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all time, Dark Side of the Moon is the greatest rock album of all time and Comfortably Numb the greatest rock song of all time.
@Macconator2010 I could not agree more. Pink Floyd's my favorite band, Dark Side's arguably my favorite Floyd album, and Comfortably Numb's my favorite Floyd song
David is one of those rare souls that gets to tell God he has no talent left when he gets to heaven because he used it all up here on earth. Others can play faster and louder, but no one can pull the soul out of a stratocaster like him. You can actually here his intelligence in his playing. And then there's also that signature crooked little grin he gives that lets you know he has it all figured out. What a great place to be at in life.
@sketchyfolk It is sad that though there are many technically good players, so many of them cant play with subtlety and real feel. I still look to DG, Andy Latimer and one or two modern guys like Mikael Akerfeldt.
He's not the most schooled musician nor the most informal. he has class taste and talent .. that's why he plays simple things without sounding cheap nor mindless shredder
I agree with stringslasher, Gilmour in many ways defined "emotional finesse" (if I can borrow your phraseology". Throughout both Division Bell and Momentary Lapse of Reason, Gilmour literally pours out his soul through that instrument, like it was a conduit to something otherworldly. So many, many "performers" have both come and gone,...David Gilmour, is in this fans mind, both a visionary and a master of the musical and lyrical projection of the soul.
Do you still have that red strat? You should make a video with it. I love that red Gilmour strat. It's the Tone I like to hear most of the time when I think of what I want from a Strat.
@darthinfurnus I actually built a clone of that guitar :) Bought a Wine-Red Mexi-Strat, and put the EMG DG-20 Gilmour Pickguard/Pickup set in it. The pickups cost more than the guitar LOL It sounded sweet when done though. I even cut 2" off the whammy bar :)
@iyep - lol. David Gilmour wrote the song, he can play it anyway he'd like. I notice all as well... He didn't go not for note but he doesn't have too. He's David Gilmour.
@chrstphr99b He's never played the comfortably numb solo's the same way twice either. I like that he changes it up, though the version on The Wall is my favorite.
@FrustratedNameSearch you gotta see the one at gdansk if you haven't already. that blows anything else out of the water. the tone he gets on it is absolutely brilliant.
@iyep Not necessarily his fault. That is Strat # 0001 and back then the fretboards had a 7.5" Radius. Bending can be difficult enough on those, add the age of the instrument and fret-out's are to be expected.
@bgtocak i don't think this is 0001 but i know gilmour has 0001. i would think 0001 would be sunburst cuz thats what strats were when they came out in 54
@ledzeppelin4485 yes it it, watch the interview david gilmour 2008 (2/2) on youtube and you'll see. I couldn't cat and paste it here, Youtube wouldn't lett me do it
Davey shows us what to play and also what not to play. He can make any note sound larger than life by doing so. "You know what's the loudest noise in the world, man? The loudest noise in the world is silence"-Thelonious Monk Music is the space between the notes Claude Debussy "Ours is a world of words: Quiet we we call silence- which is the merest word of all"- Al Aaraaf quoted by edgar allen poe in "silence- a fable" a fable about the power of silence.
People who think in terms of scales and theory probably think Dave's style is limited. But, I consider him a virtuoso. He's not a shredder but, so many great guitarists overlook the side of playing that he maximizes. I learned a lot about making notes matter from him. I see great shredders more often than I see guitarists who can also include the kind of patient, smooth, emotional finesse and accurate note bending he does. I love both approaches. I think he deserves equally great status.
@FrustratedNameSearch When I think of some shredders, I can understand your point of view. For me personally, though, I want to be able to use any technique I can to express myself. I don't want to limit myself. But , yeah, it's gotta have a tune and a good groove. Nothing beats a good melody. I try to combine the two. They're opposite ends of a spectrum.
@stringslasher shredders can't make you feel emotion, and nobody makes you feel it Like David Gilmore. The way he pours emotion into the way he plays is unmatched. You ACTUALLY FEEL it!!
@tinrunner2000 I agree, when I think of robotic, non-stop shredding over meaningless, sterile backing tracks for no apparent reason. But, there are times when throwing some shredding in there adds fury and aggression to the tune, depending on the situation. I can be moved by it under those circumstances. I try to combine the two approaches. I'm pleased to see that so many Gilmour fans are out there 'cause he's underrated. You're right, he does tap into emotion at the deepest core within us.
WOW! Young or old he is the best musician EVER!!! Gilmour takes his listeners along for a ride they will never forget, and that makes him simply a LEGEND...and a GENIUS!!!!
Excellent, David Gilmore is the best hands down, Seen Floyd twice in 87 and 94, Come on David we need one more Pink Floyd Tour, You're fans are waiting..
Here's the 5:25 explaination. I heard it too after listening to the solo. At first I thought that David didn't hit the string correctly. Though, since I've never heard David make a mistake I took a closer look. David did a hammer on a string but it didn't 'ring out' right. The strat and the pickups are very old.On the dvd I saw that after playing marooned which came first, David had to tune the guitar. So it got out of tune very fast. Thus, the 5:25 is not a mistake.
Stratocaster tremolos dont stay in tune very well at all, even the very very best ones go out of tune ever so much. The tremolos really on spring tension and are mounted via six screws. Add to that, gilmour sets his bridge at floating so it can be pulled up and pushed down. This keeps the tremolo from arriving back at a neutral position without manipulating it yourself with the bar. With some of the stuff ive seen him do on sorrow im surprised he stays in tune at all.
I see that everyone points out that at around 5:25 Gilmour makes a mistake. It's well known fact that he was not feeling very well that night...that's why Sorrow and Marooned (most of it was improvisation) diddn't turn out as they supposed to. (for me they sound marvelous, btw). Gilmour's face expression tells that itself. (at least to them that knows him really well)
Gilmour is my guitar God and I have never seen this performance. I'm going to be honest and say that this is not one of his best performances, just one example 5:25.. but it makes me appreciate his genius even more. He gracefully exits mishaps. The responsability of being up there, playing perfect notes.. if it was me, I think i'd crap myself and call for mummy... we are all good playing in our bedrooms, but being up there takes nerves of steel every time. I never get tired of watching Dave.
(3) My 23 year old son came into the room and said, "Yeah, Dad, you don't know who that guy is? He was with Pink Floyd.
My memory of Pink Floyd was listening to an 8-track of Us and Them and the Dark Side of the Moon while my brother drove our VW van through the winter tulle fog in the Sacramento Valley during the winter break of 1973 or 1974.
(2) I'm not a sappy guy, but his playing brought tears to my eyes. The rhythm of the music, the swaying of the band players, and the chorus babes, all fit together into one explosive, cathartic expression of loss and recovery. The music is reminiscent of Clapton's River of Tears, but with more urgency and defiance.
Check out his performance of "Marooned" from this same night. I think itll be right up your alley. One of the most amazing performances ive ever seen and stunningly beautiful guitar tone
Thanks, Mac. Glimour is truly a virtuoso of a a guitar playing. You don't get to be that good with just mechanical ability alone -- it has to come from the soul.
(1) Unbelievable! I was flipping through the cable channels one night and stumbled upon the Strat Pack special. I happened to tune in just as this guy was stepping up on the stage, tuning up.
My initial thought was "who is this geezer?" I didn't recognize him, and I had no idea what Strat Pack was even all about.
From Gilmours very first note, I was mesmerized. As he played on, I couldn't belief such purity and poetry would have come up through my generation and I could have missed it.
Gilmour: la dimostrazione che una tecnica assolutamente semplice, accompagnata da una espressività e un tocco di una dolcezza rara valgono molto, ma molto di più di tanti coglioni dalle dita veloci e sentimento zero.
Gilmour amazing Gilmour... He could even be one of the best singers but indeed he "simply" plays the guitar... And when he plays it... The touch... The sound...
His singing is great for his music. And maybe a few other songs. I don't he is one of the best singers. The Thrill Is Gone by BB King wouldn't work well with Gilmours voice.
For killing the past and coming back to life.." This song remind me of my girlfriend, my life. . . My favorite song. . .Amazing, the great song of my life.
OK then, I recently lost my husband of 17 years and yes, this song sure does make me cry. I can picture him laying in that hospital bed looking out the window starring straight into the shining sun
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hate people who say they start crying when hearing a nice song!
If the song reminds you to a friend or family who died, alright! post it and tell us how the song reminds you. But if the song doesnt remind you something emotional, stop posting such stupid things!
easy man..are you having a tough life? let people say what they want. in fact i agree with you but thats just a point... enjoy this amazing music and chill out

absolutely.... IMHO a few of the others ( although not always accompanied by vocals which also
sets Gilmore apart) that play with this deep of soul and feeling would be Jeff Beck and Laruie Wisefield
In a differnet tone but simiar you could include Elvin Bishop and Leslie West.
It's the "not ripping it" but slow bends and total "feel" of just a few well placed notes that can take you there.
Those guys do that thing best for me...

Is the side man with the red strat the rhythm guitarist of Dire Straits at "On the Night" tour? (Just forgot his name!).
----

Gilmour amazing Gilmour... He could even be one of the best singers but indeed he "simply" plays the guitar... And when he plays it... The touch... The sound...

His singing is great for his music. And maybe a few other songs. I don't he is one of the best singers. The Thrill Is Gone by BB King wouldn't work well with Gilmours voice.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I hate people who say they start crying when hearing a nice song!
If the song reminds you to a friend or family who died, alright! post it and tell us how the song reminds you. But if the song doesnt remind you something emotional, stop posting such stupid things!
we know you´re not crying!
