Such a consummate actress & what an impeccable performance; Listen to and feel in your guts the emotions conveyed by her voice - she knows how to touch every fiber of our being!
I don't know why there are so many negative comments about her diction. Her words are clear and she obviously has a good understanding of the words. It's her pitch I have trouble with... Glorious voice, however.
Yes, a great Micaela. Sad that this role is often undercast as Micaela is considered to be the "seconda donna." BUT...she has the best aria that Bizet ever wrote! Marie Mclaughlin was a wonderful Micaela not so many years ago.
Some find this aria the most interesting in the whole piece...
I wouldn't change a single note in it... The climax in the middle is so beautifully built that I would close my ears if they interpolated anything at the end...
There are musical pieces that call for a high note and the composers even expected it even though they left it out in their manuscript. This -most definitely- is not the case in this thought-out aria...
This aria is wonderfull but very very dificult. If any singer can sing it only good, for me is a triumph. Congratulations Angela! (Ps: The best Micaela: Ileana Cotrubas, of course. The have also the perfect pronunciation)
yep and then on tour in japan she was all "i ain't wearing no wig" and vople was all "it's going on that stage" and then after she said she wasn't gonna wear it, she still showed up with alagna for a performance and vople was in the elevator with them and he was all "someone else is doing it" and alagna and her stood in the lobby as people were walking in making this big deal about how they wouldn't let her perform. when they revived the production, though, she wore it.
lots of singers have terrible french diction because hafl just can't do it right, and half have had teachers with bad french themselves, even though they're fluent, or from funny parts of france. it's weird, but her french diction is actually one of the best out there, sadly. that's why to get perfect french singers need to like, go to france, haha.
Granted, to sing this aria in a live performance must be difficult as it starts in the lower register, but Angela is either too passionate in that register or cannot hear herself, then in that higher register she screams so the balance between lower and high register is pretty bad. Where is Ileana Cotrubas? Why must the great singers age?
Sutherland? I even couldn't understand her english...and I totally agree with notrichandnotfamous comment. French people can sometimes be a pain in...the neck.
I won't say this is the best Micaëla ever, because I've heard so many unforgettable interpretations that I wouldn't feel fair by saying that. However, Gheorghiu ranks among the very best. The depth and emotion that her voice convey with the amazing richness and delicacy of her timbre is amazing. Her distinctive combination of dark and light tones are ideal for this aria. Besides, I really love the way she gestures and sings, always so stylish and simple, but very effective. Brava!

Micaela - the ultimate party-pooper in opera:) Sutherland once said any time she had insomnia, she would think of Micaela and it helped LOL

She sounds as if she were having cramps. Cramps all over her body. And heartburn too.

Is this the wig she did not want to use and the regista said, "this wig will be on stage, with or without you"? lol

@robin678 Of course, Carmen rules but an outstanding carmen, otherwise, this "seconda donna" could steal the night

In my opinion that's too fast. It lacks a little of its sweetness, And too much vibrato.

Angela makes this dull aria quite interesting. I liked it better in the olde days when they interpolated a high Bb at the end.

Try to listen María del Rocío Giordano´s Micaela. She is really young (22) but her voice has a beautifull color, sweetness, and she do great pianos.
