  • This scene almost made me cry :(

  • Comment removed

  • Wash was the best character :( i would have taken that harpoon for him..

  • @gameboxfreak-the firefly series left us with so many question when it was canceled. I'm glad they were able to answer some of these questions with the serenity movie.

  • @3243f6a8885-thanks. I'm a new fan of firefly. I always thought the serenity movie was the pilot on the four-disc DVD.

  • OK, I'm lost. When/what episode does this take place? I don't recall wash or book dying.

  • @tripnbilly77 it's from the movie Serenity

  • @tripnbilly77

this is the movie josh weadon made to finish the story he wanted to tell with firefly

  • This is funny to people..?

  • I never saw this coming.

I knew people were going to die and I was preparing myself to lose Jayne, or Kaylee, or Zoey... But never did I expect Wash.

There was a lot of screaming and tears that day...

  • ....jokes like that...also next person who makes that joke I WILL EAT YOUR LIMBS >:U

  • Wash used to drive a spaceship … until he took a harpoon to the chest.

  • This shocked me. I watched for the first time tonight. Incredible.

  • While I heartily support the idea of occasionally killing main characters in adventure shows/movies in order to maintain a feeling of tension... why'd they have to kill *Wash* of all people? Dammit. This scene made me respect and resent the writers at the same time.

  • OWNED

  • i wasn't surprised at all when the shepherd died... i shat a brick sideways when wash died.

  • Fuck you very much Joss.

  • josh whedon always kill my favourite character ..brilliant

  • I laughed when I first saw this. I always do when someone gets killed mid-sentence.

Of course once I finished laughing, "Aw, why Wash!?"

  • sigh...I wish they didn't kill him off. ;(

  • First, I'm a firefly fan all the way. I loved the series and the movie. However, i must admit, the first time I saw this, I lol'd...am I evil?

  • This scene never gets easier to watch. I accidently spoiled it for my brother when I started sobbing the first time he said "I'm a leaf on the wind..watch how I soar". I honestly felt like someone had hit me in the chest with a hammer.

You can see him smiling....so proud of himself.

Zoe's reaction was heartbreaking. It's like her sky was ripped from her.

Though if it helps anyone, a follow up comic (which is canon) revealed that she's pregnant with his daughter.

  • I screamed and cried at this! I was so saaaaad!

  • OF ALL THE PEOPLE

  • I screamed and cried when this happened! I was so depressed at the end of the movie. Then when the burial came, I cried even harder. R.I.P Hoban "Wash" Washburne.

  • once in flight school I was *splat*

  • LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MY GOD THAT WAS COMEDY!

  • @PSNGreyLynx fuck you

  • @nwish425 youc first, the thing is I don't give a fuck about all those characters I watched this movie first and I laughed my ass off

  • @PSNGreyLynx What the fuck is wrong with you?

  • @techee44 nothing, I didn't give a fuck about wash, never watched the show at the point I saw this in the movie, and when I did, I still didn't give a fuck. However, this dude died in A GOD DAMN FUNNY way.

I'm sorry I don' give a fuck a fictional character died because maybe he's a FICTIONAL CHARACTER that I didn't care about. I've seen characters I like die slowly and painfully, that died after seeing loved ones killed or worse. This guy got a quick and easy death, and it was funny to me.

  • @PSNGreyLynx

The Goddamn Batman and Luke Skywalker are fictional characters too.

They'll still have more of an impact on reality than your little shit stain of existence will.

  • @TrickyDickStudios The difference is I'm not talking about them I'm talking about Washburne here also those two have no canonical deaths.

  • It. Should. Have. Been. Jayne.

  • @Dentareem Actualy, it should've been Yo-Saph-Brit :P

  • @Dentareem

    Nah... Inara...

I like Jayne... Such a... SImple mind ;P

  • @Dentareem I know

  • fun fact:Joss Whedon hates everything that is being alive.

  • when i first saw this, my sky was taken from me

  • @stephenrodgers1000 lol that's some heavy shit man

  • I found that scene... hillarious.

  • ARGHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    JOSS DIE, DAMN YOU JOSS!

    *Stab stab*

  • lol the title is REALLY MEAN

  • Apparently Alan kept joking on the day saying: "Why does my script only go up to page 105 than stop suddenly?"

  • This is one of my least favorite scenes, considering wash is one of my most favorite characters.

  • It's amazing how little recognission Book's death receives ... especially since it lasted longer. Heck, Book even got to finish his sentence. (I'll admit that I'm guilty of sidelining Book a bit myself, though; I love Wash, and while Book got some awesome lines, I don't think he was spotlighted enough to get me really interested.)

Also, what is it about this video that draws people who have already seen the movie? XD We just keep coming back again ...

  • JOOOOSSSSS!!!!! *sobs*

  • WASH!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! He was my favorite character from Firefly!

  • @SulliMike241 same

  • JOSS! *shakes fist*

  • I screamed out loud when I first watched this movie! Wash was (and always will be) my favorite character and, even though I knew he died, NO BODY warned me he was going to be impaled by a harpoon the size of a freaking telephone pole!

I seriously bawled my eyes out for an hour and had to re-watch the end because I missed it all in my distress!

  • @89Irishchick Pretty good way to die, all told. Specially compared to what generally happens when the Reavers get you. Hell, if I get to choose my death being impaled by a telephone-pole harpoon ranks pretty high up there.

  • K.O

  • i would love to see how they made this scene for the movie!

  • I half expected it to be a blooper and with Alan (Wash) suddenly laughing out loud... whilst still impaled.

    RIP!

  • Damn you reavers, you didn't let him finish his sentence.

  • Oddly, I never got into Wash as a character. Rather poetically in fact, my two favorite moments of him are when he was originally introduced in the show (Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!) and this final flight of his. It was great to really see him flexing his muscle as a pilot.

However, this scene was still not as disappointing as the fact Simon lived, lol.

  • @PiroMunkie whats wrong with simon?

  • @aradioactivedonut He's all up on my woman! :P

  • Goramn you Joss!

  • the title for this video made me lol and then immediately feel very guilty for laughing.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i wish that show was still going it was probally the greatest show of all time

  • Killed mid-sentence. That is always funny to me.

  • DAMN YOU JOSS WHEDON!!! At the same time, great twist. Never saw it coming. Which is why Whedon is the master.

  • "I am a leaf on the wind - watch how I soar." You will be missed Wash... :'(

  • I nearly cried.

  • @superknightHCHS I DID cry. With actual tears. Still do every time I see it. Every. Frakking. Time.

  • I realise why he died, to show they were in serious trouble. All bets were off at that point. Still, it doesnt make it easier to get over.

  • @DomIstKrieg Plagerism is just a look away I guess.

  • I was like OH NO THEY DIDN'T!!.. And then I was like YOU BASTARDS, YOU KILLED WASH!! You CAN'T just kill Wash, the (2nd?) coolest spaceship pilot in all scifiverse!! It was a bold move that carried the message there will probably never gonna be a sequel. Which is tragic. Why?! Firefly was brilliant! ;( Loved every moment of it... PS: I agree with salmonking007 that there were great reasons (AnyoneCanDie is awesome), but man, Whedon is still a jerk :/.

  • @Fr34k1ng0ut Troper?

  • Realy... I know that Wash wasn't the main MAIN character, and moust of the time he only make jokes, BUT without him... well it's empty. Serenity is nothing more then a metal, sholow machine. Alan Tudyk is better actor then Nathan Fillton or Gina Tores. He played not so big role but he make it unforgetable :( By the way - I'm still wating for Serenity 2 !! Com'on ! Just do IT!

  • Eh. He was a commodity. I'm glad Joss figured that out.

  • Oh come on. Someone should at least care about Book.

  • shouldn't laugh but oh well!

  • It's shocking and bereaving the first time it happens, but even more unbearable to watch when you know it's coming.

  • @UndergroundProShop Who's steve the pirate?

  • As a huge fan of Joss Whedon, I shouldn't be surprised, but;

    OMG WAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!

  • I HATE YOU JOSS FOR THIS. NO I LOVE YOU BUT THAT KINDA SUCKED.

  • Yar, Joe's be the only place for Wash.

  • the real reason we know Wash is absolutely dead is because Joss Whedon hates happiness.

  • Joss is more of a deceiver than a low-down dirty deceiver.

  • noooooooooo! =O

  • This was a good scene...it made the film better, because, well in the series it felt like nobody could be killed...but Joss shouldn't have done it, it makes Series 2 that little bit harder to formulate :(

  • WWWAASSSSHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!

D:< how dare you kill my favorite character !!!!!!!!!!!

WHATS THE POINT OF A SEASON 2 WITH NO WASH ?!?!?!?!?!?!? *SOBS*

  • DISLIKE SO DAMN HARD!!!!!!

  • That's gotta suck!

  • Only good writer could think of that. Crappy writers make it so that everyone gets out alive and lives happily ever after, or they make it so that everyone's death lasts for five minutes and they get to have a sentimental chat before they die. That doesn't happen in real life, sometimes your best friends don't make it. Joss managed to make everything in Firefly original. The best part is that while Mal is the main character, you love all the characters for their unique contribution

  • @Suses

BUT WHY WASH ?!?!?!?!?!? WWWHHHYYYYYYYY T^T

nah, jk i get what you mean ^-^ it really is an awesome movie and killing of a character was a pretty brave (why wash) move.

  • @Suses lol, I loooove the firefly series, where everyone gets out alive and happily. this just seemed cheap!

  • @Suses but why Wash, why not Jane!

  • @Suses I laughed at wash's death, and I find the show boring

  • @PSNGreyLynx Why on earth would you comment here, you troll? You're obviously looking for a fight.

  • @TVlover014 I'm not trolling, the thing is it shows his death full on no frills and having a good laugh and IT STILL IS HE-HILARIOUS! me trolling is me going on a wash tribute and saying "OH THE WAY HE DIES IS SO FUNNY! HE GOT FUCKING OWNED"

  • @TVlover014 also if you believe the fact I have a different opinion then yours is trolling who's truly the troll? because I just think it's funny and don't care for the character

  • Joss Whedon is the man, but he does like to kill off awesome characters.

  • damn you, making fun of the great Washbourne's death!

  • GOD DAMMIT WHY DO MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS ALWAYS HAVE TO DIE

  • yeah, i was sad when Book died and when he died... they were the best characters in the show (not really but you know what i'm saying)

  • @ajbutch123 Yeah. Shepherd Book and Wash, along with Jayne, were the most interesting characters to me.

  • A serious WTF?!?!?!? moment.

  • First time I watched the movie this made me cry...Wash is my fav charater :' (

  • NOOO I HATE THIS MOOVIE it spoiler firefly!!!!!!!!

  • Zoe... can I have Washs dinosaurs?

  • Anyone who has watched Angel and Buffy in their entirety knows that Joss has no compunctions against killing major characters in his stories.

  • That death scene always upsets me...

  • I'm never going to forget that death. I remember his death from when I saw the movie in theaters like 5 years ago.

  • Very bad ending of a very good movie coming from a very good TV series.

  • Is it just me, or is this the most random death of a major character, ever?

I have the movie, what the hell are those spikes anyway that randomly shoot through ships and into people.

  • @Usul573 They're reaver weapons, as you see the reavers use semi primal weapons all the time. Ropes to get to the ground, a 'saw" blade nearly cuts off Jaynes hand, Jayne gets hooked by (Essentially) a harpoon. It's part of reavers being so scary, their primal and evil presence.

  • @apploud

So they have some sort of organic harpoon weapons, and when Serenity crashes they're instantly right there even though they should still be fighting the fleet, and they know exactly where to fire it to hit Wash.

    Hmm.

  • @Usul573 They are followed from orbit, one of the reasons they crash is because of an EMP blast from (I believe) a reaver ship. The reavers would know that their weapons wouldn't pierce the hull and so aimed for the windows. Wash was a lucky hit, you see more projectiles fire when they show the reaver ship through the window and then another projectile fires in nearly the same place causing Mal to forcefully move Zoe out of the way.

  • @apploud

Something like that, I remember seeing a ship out the window and Mal and Zoe diving away.

Still, felt like someone just clicked a kill button.

  • @Usul573 Yeah, they killed off 2 main characters. Book I wish they had kept because I liked his character and because he had a possible storyline that would have been awesome. I liked the wash character, but to me if any 1 character had to go for me it would have been him =/.

Wash's death was abrupt and rather pointless because they knew they were being followed and shouldn't have just stayed sitting on their rumps.

  • Noooooooooooooooo! *Weeps*

    THE SUDDEN BUT INEVITABLE BETRAYAL!!

  • @waterwavesandsand

Noooo, oh god, dear god in heaven!

  • @LordOfTheGnus

    LOL!!

    *Dum, dumm dumdumdumm*

May we remember Wash as a glorious pilot and a funny funny guy.

Let the Leaves of his heart fly free in death and may he become free to fly his heart in whichever direction the wind blows the leaves.

lol, srry. I was never any good at eulogies. I think your quote sums it up a lot better.

    p.s...Whats a Gnus?

  • @waterwavesandsand

"Gnu" is another name for the wildebeest, an animal native to Africa.

  • @waterwavesandsand Guys, he might not be dead. Remember in the TV show in the very first episode, second part?

Well remember that scene where Mal, Jayne and Zoe come riding back on horsers and Mal walks right onto the ship and shoots that Alliance Fed in the fucking head?

Joss has said in several interviews and press junkets that he was going to come back as a recurring villain with a mechanical eye afterwards. We were all sure he was dead, the same goes for Wash.

    The Alliance could rebuild.

  • @moshmachine ....they built a gravestone in the movie.... he's dead. I know we're all Browncoats here but you have to live in reality.

  • @flamespear86

Since when does a gravestone's existence automatically mean someone's death? They left his body behind, it never shows them going back to get it. For all they know he was taken by the alliance.

You yourself said there was a gravestone however there was no burial or grave.

  • @moshmachine look, I don't like it anymore then you do but Wash died. If by anychance he did survive the impaling, he still would have bleed to death before any rescue party could have arrived, and plus, why would the Alliance help Wash? He was shielding River from them

  • @meepfeet Again, in the very first episode of the series a man 'dies' by getting shot right through the head, right through his right eye. And yet he returns in the comic books and would reportedly have returned to the series before it's cancellation. Anything is possible medically in the Firefly-Serenity canon.

''You have weakened their reigime, but the alliance are not done and they are not forgiving''. There would be nothing stopping them from reviving Wash for interrogation purposes.

  • @moshmachine I really wish Wash could come back, but they did bury him. I think he's pretty dead.

  • @ElRay0707 How many times did they bury characters in Buffy and Angel?

Joss, I can almost guarantee would do something like that.

  • @moshmachine But Wash is human and I'm pretty sure witchcraft doesn' exist in the Firefly Universe...

  • @theHERMITLADY to which I reply if you saw my previous comments on the video you'd see he has brought supposed dead characters back to life in the comics, which are 100% canon set between the series and the film.

  • @moshmachine To which I reply... Sweeet, thanks!

  • @theHERMITLADY You are welcome.

  • Comment removed

  • actually she's cuban...

  • zoe was her name ya.... cuban

  • It's not coming back, so it's indeed a life worth losing to make the end memorable.

  • To all you asking why it was Wash, I heard it was because they couldn't afford to keep him. Don't ask how because idk. Yes i know there was only like 20 minutes left but that's what i heard so don't quote me.

  • Seems to me that it had to be Wash so that River could take his place as pilot and join the crew proper.

  • DAMN YOU JOSS!

  • I was all for Firefly coming back and seeing my favorite character, Wash, also.

    Now I'm just confused.

  • My heart almost stopped beating during this part of the movie. I cried so hard!

  • DAMN YOU REAVERS!!!!

  • I think it should have been Zoe....because, while I love her character, she's supposed to be this top knotch hard core military chick...yet...they way she handles a firearm is the way someone handles a firearm that has never been trained on using one....pointing the barrel at her crew, bringing her head to the gun, not the gun to her head...you know, simple, basic principals of weapons safety she completely ignores or doesn't know...things that anyone trained would instinctively do...

  • i no right, its so fun to watch these in movies. still good show tho

  • btw, its basic hunters safy to maintain muzzle control, dont point at allies, dont put hand on trigger unless your going to shoot it, and pretend safty doesnt work, it can fail

  • why why why why why.

  • Not to say i was happy with his death....it was heartbreaking and horrible, but the way he died was pretty memorable to me. I mean i'm never going to forget it.

  • Joss was a dick for killing him off, and not because he was my "Favorite Character" (Which he wasn't that goes to Jayne xD)

The death scene was complete bullshit. i'd be okay with them killing Wash off if he actually got more of a sendoff then this line. same with book. by all means kill the characters but make it actually memorable. xD

  • How is that not memorable? He saves all of their lives, then just when you think everything is okay... Bam.

I'd call it a blaze of glory.

  • WHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!!!!!!!!!!

    holy christ thats sad

  • Dpn't hate me guys, I wish Wash didn't die too, because he was a funny nice guy, but it's kinda funny that his last words were: I'm a leaf on the wind watch how I *splat.

At least he had his head turned so he didn't see the inevitable sudden sad fact he was going to die.

  • Whedon was always going to to kill off Walsh because he had had plans for river to be the new pilot of Serenity, but since the series was cancelled he never got the chance to do.

  • i was so sad nd angry when he died..he was my 2nd favourite character Y_Y

y do dey always kill da funny guy?! Y_Y

  • Did you watch only the movie, or the whole series?

If it's just the movie, I suppose I can understand your contention -- the series adds a great deal to all the characters. The movie just makes it solid.

  • The whole series. I liked Wash in his first scene with the dinosaurs, and would've loved to see his character develop from that point. It's just he didn't.

  • I totally get why Joss killed him off, though I don't like it. It created a sense of how much the shit really had hit the fan.

After witnessing this scene for the first time I had no sense of security that the characters would make it out of the final fight; and that's what every good plot requires- tension and uncertainty.

Plot twists are nice, but throwing curveballs throws you off the 'invincible' character mindset and gives you something every series needs to be great; suspense.

  • Totally agree. Throughout the series, every time a character was shot or in a life threatening situation, a part of my mind just said, 'he's a main character, something will happen to keep him alive'. If Wash wasn't killed, the whole fight with the reavers would have had a similar effect.

  • @salmonking007 ..... and I almost wouldn't have minded if he'd picked any other character.

  • @salmonking007

I agree, so many TV shows and such you know the characters are pretty much safe because they don't want to cut the actors. Makes them less climatic.

  • best film death ever. Very sad that it had to be wash though ;_;

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *continue for infinate*

  • yeah

  • Oh, dear God in heaven...

May we all remember Wash's death, but let it remind us about his life and goodness.

But makes me like this show even more. I haven't seen it yet, but this means that the movie is real as a story for all the characters. Plus points waaaaaaaaaaaaay up!

  • saddest. death. ever.

  • its kinda sad how he dies though. so sudden

  • It was a harpoon fired by the reaver ship that shot them down. I think it looks more like a giant stake. I don't like splat.

  • i think that was a projectile fired by the ship that followed serenity

    wash was like "uhhh....."

the others were like "wtf? where did that came from???

  • wtf hit him lol?
