  • VZ I like the way you display a pattern. I teach drums here in NJ and have introduced your style to my students. Thanks, Jim

  • What Kit? Because It Looks Nice.

  • This pattern makes an absolutely fantastic groove if you put both hands on the hats and open them in unison with the kick...or my personal favorite..right hand on the bell of the ride, left doing ghost notes on the snare/toms/whatever and then (of course) huge backbeats on 2 and 4..or 3 if you're thinking of this as a half time groove in eighth notes..it sounds fantastic for halftime moments in a groovy song...thanks Randy :D

  • lol you actually look like Neil Peart.

  • @DustinShaneYounce you obviously have no idea what Neil Peart looks like xD

  • @metalmaster126 wwell he looks like tom hanks

  • i fuckin love you man!.........screw the electronic shit youre the bomb

  • Just stumbled upon your vids Vans man. Really glad you have some cool tom fill exercises. Thats what I've been lookin for.

  • Randy whats the key to getting everything very smooth? Solos, grooves, everything. Thats one thing i personally and alot of other drummers out there struggle with is keeping everything flowing and sounding nice and smooth when your jamming

  • like the territory - Sepultura very nice

  • Its most likely your sound module that can't handle cross sticking. Awesome Teaching by the way.

  • Its most likely your sound module that can't handle cross sticking.

    Thanks!

  • nice skullcandys

  • this guy has a good radio voice

  • bit of a prog style

    sounds nice

  • I use those same Black n Grey skullcandy headphones for my electric kit. haha naicee

  • it sounds like Thirteen steps to nowhere from Pantera ;)

  • are you sorta playing 'bonham' triplets and just switching back and forth from ascending to descending? i really like this... i can play it. i just don't know what i'm doing.

  • hi i'm doug dimmadome, owner of the dimmesdale dimma-dome

  • how much was that kit?

  • lol single stroke double bass always sounds cool or just me?

  • This is very similar to Dream Theater's Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper jungle tom groove.

  • Hi. I really enjoy your tips and lessons, your teaching metod is great and very relax for students, you are a great drummer to ! Bravo

  • Did anyone notice at 2:11 when he's talking about the which hand to play where, he says right hand on the tom and left hand on the floor tom? :)

  • i do.. funny..

  • Sounds like Isis

  • Geil! Danke!

  • Yeah, that's a TD-9KX/SX. Depending on where you live.

  • Dude, rad lesson, cheers.

  • My roland TD-4 has some rim shot problems, but it is easily fixed in your system settings.

it would miss hits, but you need to change the scan time, and the sensitivity, and Xtalk.

  • 5:03 sounds like 13 steps to nowhere intro by pantera lol

  • i love all your videos! this reminds me of the drum intro for sepultura's "territory" but with the floor tom instead of a crash

  • im beginner and i love his vids, but ,it look like he have the same problem as me,at 1:47 when he use crash and snare, the crash dont sound or not each time.

i have this problem too and no idea to check it.

    i have a TD12 with a PD125 as snare,if someone got an idea :/

  • i have the TD20... no issues

  • He's using a Roland TD12 i believe. Just sold my one =[

  • No it's a td-9 , look at the drum brain

  • Hi, thanks for posting this vid :D

But which electric drum do you use?

  • Why yes we can.

  • uhh did u get your left and rights mixed up at 2.09 or am i just having a really blonde moment lol?

sick as groove though, trying to learn it

  • i think he did

  • this guy has good tips.. unlike "expert village" which totally blows

  • @jockrot666 Agreed. I also love the fact that he has fun and makes it funny in every vid too. Unlike watching a Carter Beauford tutorial which is 5% showcasing technique and 95% "Uh...um...ah...and....uh...the the the the the....uh...what?"

  • 1:44, LOL!

  • LMAO. MAZIN

  • i love you randy rofl

  • Your are a sweet, cool dude. Great lessons!!! Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A comment from the beginner of beginners.

Alessis Surge cymbals usb into a module = No false triggering, zero latency, pretty good cymbal muting, dual trigger pads with real replaceable skins.

The disappointment of the Master with his electric set is too painful to watch!

Thank you for sharing your gift with us Mr. Van Patten.

    Regards,

    Alex

  • bass tom floor bass snare bass floor tom

  • cool lesson, thanks...

  • by 'normal tom' i ment next lowest tom..

  • this is probably a silly question because ive never reall taken much notice of an electric drum kit, but in the first beat, is your right hand on a floor tom or on just a normall tom?

  • that would be the floor tom that kit consist of 2 rack 2 floor but really its just a patern u could play it on the rack if u choose

  • RVP i have a question

my mom always complains about how loud my drums are

should i get an electronic drumset?

  • get a new mom. cheaper

  • Look into ways to sound proof your room. A quick easy way is to buy a bunch of that foam egg create material for mattresses. It will help difuse the sound if anything. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • wat dose he do with them then???

    glue them to his walls??lol

  • i would say so unless money is an issue in that case just get drum mutes and stuff your bass...

  • even my mom complains me, but I haven't my drums in my room, cause it don't fit in, i just play in the living room and all the neighbours are going to kill me one of these days xD

  • same here, so I bought the drums from Guitar Hero, small cheap and does it for the basics :p

  • Thanks!!!!

  • This e-drum issue about not triggering in the same time can be fixed. I had the same problem with my set.

Try to digg in advanced settings. Crosstalk etc.

And Congratulations ! Great tutorial !

  • Goon lol That is one of my favortie beats I got to get that down.I been playing about a year and I almost got the epps cause folks hollerin teling me to stop lol thanks for helping me get them to enjoy and not deploy mobile ear defence tactics.

  • lmao at 5:26

  • are you a pantera fan? a lot of your stuff is in pantera songs

  • Not really. Maybe he watches my videos. Ha Ha. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • hi, when i record myself playing alog with my td9 n pod, i cant record it right, eather everything oversaturats or i have to keep the volume down so low i cant hear what im doing... any tips to have a desent recording, cuz urs sounds awesome

  • ah that would be nice if mine could do that most of the songs i play have choked cymbols in one part at least so that would help me a lot

  • Yep electronic cymbols are the one component they still need to drastically improve on. It's the only part of my set that ever gives me any problems. I hate when they don't pick up.

  • cant choke em either which pisses me off

  • Depends on the set you have. The ones on the TD12 set I currently use can be choked which is nice.

  • the tom beats kinda remind me of the intro for Sepultura's - War For territory... unfortunately I cannot find a decent version of it on You Tube for comparison, but its a killer beat. both Van's and Sepultura. :) cheers!

  • As always, thanks for sharing Randy. You are more good guy, than gooney! We appreciate all the good drumming vids.

  • I have the same friggin' problem with my no. 2 crash.... drives me insane!!!

  • 1:43... lol

  • Hey super bags! Go to bed

  • Haha this guy rocks!

  • man he was getting frustrated with that middle crash.

  • 1:38 - 1:46 rofl llloll

  • umm um BAHH!! Umm BAHH,

    Sweet!!!!!!

  • cool

  • lol, 1:43 xD

  • The best drum groove is Bonzo at How Many More Times, near at the end! WOW! That whole part grooves by itself!

  • i dont have 'javascript' so i cant freaking him

  • oh man that helped a lot for me. cause if you know dave grohl(ex nirvana drummer, queens of the stone age, probot, foo fighters front man) he does those tom grooves which sound like double bass. YOU REALLY ROCK! KEEP ON POSTING VIDS CUZ YOU'RE AWESOME!

  • Randy, how long have you been a drummer? You are an inspiration to us all, who wish to better our technique, speed, and general playing ability. I've been a drummer for 35 years, and just recently took it up again. I finally bought a nice set, and loaded it up with some nice cymbals. I'm getting a set of gels, to stop the unneeded ringing in my toms, and snare. How will this effect the stick snap? Thanks, Imintowater.

  • superb vid (as always)- don't be so hard on the electric kits though - once you get used to them they are fantastic :D

  • it is insanely annoying when your f'ing jammin' along and the damn cymbal doesn't trigger like it's supposed to...

  • Well hit it harder :D

  • Hitting it harder doesn't do it. It is just frustrating to pay that much for electronics not to trigger. I am soooo ready to set up my Yamaha Maple Customs!!!!

  • yeah, it is a damn nice kit!

  • he's a fucking legend!

  • Words can not describe how fucking cool this guy is.

  • i always found your videos and tuts really interesting and not so bland and boring like others.

  • that beat reminds me of one of neil peart's solos. he does that beat really fast then he puts another snare hit on the & and keeps goin like that.

  • o baterista? yes. i believe that i know exactly what your talking about! right on man! =)

  • its a cool groove, but you explain it way to much , it truley isnt too difficult, and you dont need to simplify it so much. you should show people other fills instead of takeing 5 minutes to describe a simple pattern.

  • you've broke my heart by playing on electornic drum set. But stil you are the greatest :]

  • Me too! I can't wait until my studio is done so I can bring the Yamaha's back out!!!

    RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • well ya did :), im glad to see there is a drummer teaching reasonably intelligent drumming as apposed to frantic ear bashing

  • this is awesome, only today i was trying to figure out the intro to sepultura's "territory" and this is pretty much it, except igor manages to add a cymbal with every kick and snare hit. great job man!

  • I had no idea that was what I was playing, but glad to have helped. Ha Ha. RVP

  • Really nice groove. Tom grooves are my weakest link! Oh yeah, and you said Groovy!!!!!!! LOL thanks for posting this. Big help to me.

  • haha your wearing skullcandy!!!!!!!!!! very nice video

  • Thanks, i love these kind of vids with nice grooves and beatss

  • i have that drum kit roland td9kx

    its amazing

  • lmao @ 1:40 randy youre one funky dude.

i do this on my drums and it sounds nothing like this its disgusting.

  • fast it reminds me of pull harder on the strings of your martyr

  • hehehe Triviumm!!!

  • I enjoy the videos and would like to say thank you for taking the time to post them.

  • Fuck Children of Bodom. I've watched every one of Randy's videos and I can assure you that he's not ripping off some Norwegian metal group. Be thankful that this killer drummer is offering free lessons that actually teach you how to play drum beats without skull-fucking you with their merchandise.

  • yeeeaaah they are from finland. HUUGE difference :)

  • the vid wont load. thanks anyway

  • damn, you´re right, but it is a pretty awesome beat.

  • i hate that intro song .... Otherwise he talks just as fast as he plays :)

  • Hey he robbed this from In your face by children of bodom

  • For starters, he never claimed he invented it. Secondly, it wouldn't matter if he did - I'm pretty sure that there isn't a completely different drum beat for every song in existence.

Really good video, great beat, really versatile too.

  • Actually, I have never heard that song or band. Maybe they robbed it from me. Ha Ha. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • You have to realize everything has been done before, literally everything. Grow up and just be happy that he took the time to help people learn something really cool.

  • from 3:00 to 3:15 and a couple times later in the demonstration it also sounds like the beginning of sepultura's war for territory off of chaos a.d.like a few of the other people said it's impossible to do something that hasn't been done in one way or another.

  • sounds like an awesome parradiddle when it's fast. sweet beat.

  • And i jst tried it on my drums. I got it in less than 2 mins. Thanks alot rvp. I see a lot of me in those beats.

  • HOLY SHIT. THAT SLOW BEAT. I play it ALL the damn time on my right heels toes and left foot. ALL THE TIME!!

  • thats cool. im going to practice that!

  • hahaha dude i really like your attitude =),the groove is really cool! i'll practice it...greetings from argentina

  • Randy-

Another informative video, keep it up. Some of your frustration with your new e-kit could be reduced by checking out vdrums(dot)com/forum If you haven't been there already...

  • ummm it could be reduced by not buying one at all.

  • I agree... my mistake. The Yamahas are set back up as we speak! RVP

  • on your yamahas what cymbals do you use only the hi hats and the crashes

  • did he sell his old drum set?

  • NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • i no his old kit was well better......i h8 electronic kits

  • Trust me... My Yamahas will be set again real soon! RVP

  • i will wait for that because all electronic kits sound the same but acoustic kits all have their different and unique sound.

  • pretty cool

  • hey great video, i wanted to ask something though... i have a td9 n when i try to conect it to speakers or to my laptop to record myself, i can bearly hear the drums, is there a way to change that setting??? cuz when i play with my headphones it sounds perfect but it sounds so low throgh the out-put things... please a lil help...

i learned alot with ur videos, thanx so much!!!

  • Amazing technique as always Mr Patten.

  • Hi Randy

enjoyed the vid wish I could get somewhere near your speed it would help to make things sound so much better , will keep at it though. You have an interesting sounding job I live in the UK but have been coming to Florida over the past few years. Have you worked on anything I might have seen?

  • that sounds exactly like the beat for the beginning of somewhere i belong liveby linkin park i love that beat

  • lol i love this dude, he's soooo funny and he is awesome on the drums.

  • We learned this beat back in the very very very beginning of Vansdrumming!

'Cept the right hand went between ride and floor tom.

Can't believe that was almost 2 years ago!!!!

  • Actually the pattern was close but quit different. Check it out again on my You Tube Channel. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • i'm not sure if i'm right, but at 2:14 when you were explaining it again i think you made a mistake. it was supposed to be kick-hightom-lowtom-kick-snare-kick-lowtom-hightom, if i'm correct. if i'm wrong, then i'm sorry, haha. just thought i might add.

  • Hey, I can't even get my right and left hand right. Ha Ha.

    RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Another e-drum comment: In a previous video you mentioned not being able to show when the hihat goes up, because it's fixed pad.

I'm sure you know this, but just in case you don't: There's two other hihat pads that can be mounted on any standard hihat machine for acoustic kits. These pads really go up and down as a "normal" hihat cymbal would. Not only do these pads allow visual feedback for your viewers, they also add a much more realistic feeling to your playing.

    Look up Roland VH-11 :-)

  • I have checked those out. They are really cool feeling. If this were my main kit I would go out and buy one. I will be breaking my Yamaha's out of their cases really soon. Thanks, RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • If your cymbal doesn't trigger when you hit the snare at the same time (or vice versa), you might need to adjust the "XTalk Cancel" option. This option is meant to prevent accidential triggering of adjacent pads when you hit a pad really hard and everything nearby starts vibrating, potentially causing faulty trigger signals. Play around with it a bit, if your cymbal isn't defect, it should solve your problem.

  • haha, the goon cymbal

  • ur awesome dude, I've watched all your vids, havent bought the dvd yet tho.youve helped me improve my drumming alot. but thanks for all the freebies!word=)

  • your technique is incredible bro...
