My friend works in acting and broadcasting. They did that with his show. He called them 'exterior shots' or establishing shots. I can't remember which.

People got upset at them, b/c they figured out that the house "didn't match the way the rooms on the set were arranged."

Someone wrote in and said "You guys are lying. You don't really live in that house. All the rooms don't match the outside of the house."

I thought it was weird.

Attenborough explained that if they'd really filmed wild polar bears with cubs in the den the bear would have either destroyed the camera and cameraman and possibly killed it cubs too! Wise to not actually do that (film a wild bear in it's den) so fuck off with the "fake" complaints and complain about something really important!

Pretty sure they have used footage that wasn't from the wild in the past. On the DVDs they actually have the makings of, you can find out where the footage was shot. It takes an huge amount of effort to get most of the shots and there's no guarantee they will get the 30s shot, can anyone blame them that they might 'fake' footage sometimes

Its like if I criticized him for not going back in time and actually filming the pterosaurs in that Flying Monsters documentary hes making as opposed to filming the shots and using CGI ones.

As for the whole Attenborough bit, I'm surprised that people don't already know that footage comes from different sources. But does this take away from the informative nature of the documentary? Of course not. I still respect Attenborough and his work.

As a zoology major, I know it's very difficult to capture the births of certain animals (especially large predatory ones, or animals that lay eggs or give birth in secluded or covered up locations). Seriously, he's trying to fucking educate people. I don't see what the big deal is. Thank you for addressing this.

One of my professors had been in a couple documentaries, and I keep what he said about the process in mind whenever watching any. Like how the execs decide that Ewan McGregor sort of just "finds" him in the jungle for the narrative despite that he was sitting just outside the shot on the plane down. They didn't lie and say he appeared down there from the mist, but they simply didn't talk about him. That's a tamer example. On others, the crew just played up drama for drama's sake.

The final episode of "Frozen Planet" rightly dealt with ice caps and glaciers melting.

But he was clever about it. There was no speculation or any "blame game" involved and he stuck 100% to nothing but solid verifiable facts.

Showing actual photos of how the ice cover of the Arctic has receded. Solid concrete statistics - which have been verified a hundred times over, by everyone of all biases and persuasions - of how glaciers have receded. That sort of thing.

He gave the climate deniers absolutely nothing. Not a shred of anything they could validly dispute.

He saw them coming and made sure that that final episode was 100% watertight from any criticism of it being "climate propaganda".

And because they couldn't attack that episode directly, what they've done is taken the indirect route of casting aspersions of dishonesty over the show in general.

Tried to create an aura of "Frozen Planet was faked", in order to create that "well, if the polar bears was faked, how do we know that the rest wasn't faked too?".

Of course, as you've mentioned, there was no dishonesty whatsoever - as the only reason they even know it was taken in a zoo is that the show's website openly admits it.

But they've taken the show's 'honesty overkill' - as no other show goes to such efforts to explain how they put everything together, exactly so that it never misleads anyone - and turned it to their advantage.

All ultimately in the name of climate denial, I assure you.

David Attenborough is one of the if not the best in his field. If you went near a polar bear in the wild giving birth, the bloody thing would go ape shit and rip you apart. Getting the film from a zoo was a good move and the money for the zoos film copyright would help the zoo and no wild bear gets freaked out

I did watch some episodes of Frozen Planet and some of the cinematography is spectacular though some shots were a little too unnatural to seem possible, hell I when I first saw that shot I knew it was impossible to be real because the Polar Bear is supposed to be burrowed in its den,

Could you imagine trying to dig into a wild Polar Bear's den just to try and get footage of the cubs? some limbs would be left behind if that happened
