  • wahoouh great version Del was a great singer !!!

  • Common practice back then to cover groups from another countrys songs. This carried on into the 70's in places like Germany...The Scorpions released singles of themselves covering The Sweet!

  • I liked Del. He was from the city where I was born: Grand Rapids. The year he hit with Runaway there was another Grand Rapids group that hit with a novelty song: "Alley Oop" by the "Hollywood Argyles". I was 11 years old and went back to visit my half-brothers and families in '61 after we'd moved to CA. It was the last time I saw them. Whenever I hear Del I think of that...

  • Rock ON

  • Only an ignoramus would actually use the word "feminazi".

  • Del's cover is very Rolling Stones.

Saw Del live in 1975 or so. Good show.

  • かっこいいROCK!

  • Love it! Thanks for posting. We lost Del too early.

  • I love Del, but, in regard to this song, the Rolling Stones version is

    better. The sound is 'fuller'!

  • This version is just fantastic!

  • @FrostfoxFilms - It's really fantastic, I thought this was the original when it was released in the mid 60's it was so popular.

  • Del's version is actually much better than Mick Jagger ... just my opinion ... but I was never a big fan of the Stones ... Kind of Beatles or Stones - I chose Beatles ...

  • Great ......love this song

  • He toured with the Stones, DUH!

  • The music is superb, but the video is simply stupid!

Why did you make the photo of the record jump back and forth?

  • thanks for posting this definately the best version

  • best version dels the man

  • Sounds kinda like Mick except I can actually understand Del Shannon!

  • I usually hate how artists butcher a good song by covering it. Del Does a great job on this one!!! I prefere this version over the stones.

  • Shit, this sounds just like Mick!!! Brilliant.

  • Just blown me away, I was born in 47 never realised how good Dels voice really was. Remember him on all the jukeboxes, but never really heard the voice, until now. Thanks for posting.

  • Sounds like Del doing karaoke

  • personally streethearts version is the best. yeah the stones wrote it but streetheart made it sing. nothing compares to kenny shields vocals ,and the bands pure musicianship.

  • TUUUUUUNNNNNNE AWWWE GOD ;) PROPER MUSIC WHT U FEEL FRM INSIDE OUT 4 A CHANGE ;) XXX

    FEEL GUD X

  • Just bought this from US. Better then Stones and even better than Wayne Gibsons

northern soul classic, think this would go down pretty well at a northern soul gig.

  • epic bassline!!!!!

  • Love this version................A classic!!!!

  • Learn something new everyday. I didn't know that Del Shannon did this song. (First)

I had only ever heard it by the Stones. Thanks for putting it on. Very good.

  • Very good...he is always worth listening to.

  • Fave stones track.

  • Del's version was released, as a single, in August 1966, and was a good-sized "regional" hit in places like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Hartford, Houston. It was a HUGE hit in both Buffalo (#2) and Endicott, New York (#3). Nationally, it "bubbled under" Billboard's "Top 100" singles and cracked Cash Box's "Top 100" twice...several weeks apart.

  • Mick and Keith wrote for Aftermath but it wasn't a single for years so Del may have recorded this in between those time periods. Yeah Del doesn't add much but Del wrote a lot of great and unique songs. Just listen to "the little town flirt" and you get a look at his immense talent. He wrote Go to Pieces and Peter and Gordon had a hit with it. .

  • a poor wanna-be copyist - bleccch

  • Hehe, thats funny, but not so bad. Dont know it before, thanks for uploading it! :-)

  • yall should check out the Kingsmen cover of this song. It's on UP and Away. Really good.

  • Why Del shannon??

  • a Xerox for sure

    but a good f*king xerox

maybe the best in history for me !

    UNDER MY THUMB !

  • my fav version!!!!!!!!!

  • This song and "cry baby cry" of DEL SHANNON AND JEFF LYNNE OF ELO ...ARE GOODS..

  • blimy i thought it was only the stones that covered this and of course wayne gibson and his northern soul version but this is quality stuff and im not into del shannon

    pete from hemel ktf

  • I think ma dads under the feckin thumb

  • wow what a grate singer he was i got too see if i can find that record i learn something new each day on youtube i never knew he recorded this song he sang it grate

  • Del Shannon was under-rated in many ways --great voice

  • great--never knew he did this

  • One of the BEST voices in Rock.....ever !

  • I thought this was the stones???

  • The guy could've tried to do something different with it...this just sounds like what it is - a poor Stones cover.

  • I agree. I hate it when artists cover a song and change absolutely nothing to make it their own.

  • on the other hand a lot of songs are ruined because the cover band couldnt or didnt know what aspect of the song made it so popular

i think this one at least had the parts we like. you are only offended by tyhe concept not the production

  • wow, im gonna have to say this is better than the rolling stones version!

  • no way...it sounds almost the same down to hav ing mic jagger and keith richards and a marimba playing...it's not unique at all...just the Rolling Stone's version with Del's voice...and I have to say...his voice is always going to remind me of oldies like Rag Doll and Black is Black....

  • @esierra92 yeah I agree

  • @esierra92 Couldn't agree more and I love the Stones' version.

  • @esierra92 it's the same.

what a lazy cover. La Roux is so much better.

  • @bootworked knob

  • @esierra92 Yes !! :)

  • Nice job. I didn't expect this one.

  • Del Shannon really puts his heart and soul into this one, just as he did on "What's A matter, Baby"

  • I had this on an Del Shannon eight track tape with a lot of so called "Covers" (covers had to be released when the original was floating or they were just other versions. Wish you people would get your facts straight before posting!

Oh, and in case you were wondering, eight tracks were crappy American invented covers of the dutch "Compact cassettes" and, although endless, were prone to all sorts of death!

  • There were also 4 track tapes that were smaller ,clear plastic with the lp cover pasted on ,you had to flip them over [ or listen to the same side over and over] the deck looked like a flat top aircraft carrier.

  • Whoever releases a record that record will always be the original that others will compare their version to. A "cover" is usually a pathetic 2nd or 3rd except for a few like Eva C. who can give greater performance than the original.

  • Wow, this is a pretty faithful cover. I almost like this one better than the original. Almost...

  • the best version is april silvia and thats no fairy tale!!!!!!

  • Good cover but the original by The Rolling Stones

    is much better.

  • much better - ? shut the fuck up dopey

  • Del Shannon always does great covers.

  • Good cover. Seen Del Shannon in 75 or 76.

  • This is why i love you tube. I never knew, and i`m 51,that Del did a cover of this song. Thanks for posting.

  • Me neither. I been sitting here listening to D.S. & I'm 61. All the old vocals echo thru my brain with D.S. tunes. I never heard it before tonight. Utubers know all the old hits.

  • This is even better than the Rolling Stones version! Thanks, RR

  • both are excellent

  • Was this released as a single or was it the b-side of another song ???

    Love Del's version !!!!

  • That is the actual single that is shown in the vid:

    1966

Under My Thumb / She Was Mine

    Liberty 55904

  • Did it chart? Seems like an odd choice of single since the Stones had done the classic version and Del's was almost an exact copy.

  • the record was only ever released as a single in the US and as far as I can see from a quick search on the Net it only reached #128

  • @oceanbound222 Dell Shannon did this song way before the Stones. Like years before. At least 10 or 15 years before.

  • @oceanbound222

Not an odd choice, he did the cover because he liked the song. What is odd about that? It's not about money to some people, it's about art.

  • @oceanbound222 dels was better!

  • @oceanbound222 - I thought this was the original, but this was popular when it was released in the mid 60's in the philippines.

  • del is the best.....

  • I wouldn't have paired up Del and this song, but he nails it. I prefer Mick's version, but this is great!

  • 1. Stones

    1. Del Shannon

    1.Tina Turner

    result?

  • Comment removed

  • Prefer Wayne Gibson's version.

  • In my opinion Del does this song just great. But gets no credit on the oldies channels for this song. Whats up with that.

    John

  • Del does this song credit. Mick does it his style, but this song was a Del style fit. Glad he recorded it.

  • no sorry you cant, still to call the stones "donkeys" is a bit rich Have you seen them both live?

  • What are you high? THis was a great cover! Mabye the problem is that your not high

  • I´d like to be under you´re thumb Del, I´ll always love you, caro

  • Awesome!

  • Just been to ur channel & can clearly see you luv Del - Me too!
