when looking up at the ceiling of the cathedral you think it looks so narrow but its really huge! just because of the height of the building i guess! I LOVE DIANE'S PLAYING!
@john1801rambo I agree with you, this is much better than the Widor. It seems suited to her tempo preferences. Listen to the chords played with the left hand and the right hand notes seem to blend right in.
I know it's very risky to criticise a performer, because this one is clearly loved and esteemed by a lot of people.
She is an amazing organist, but I noticed a few mistakes in her playing + her timing seems to be bizarre at times. She's also not playing the piece as it was composed.
I have played this piece many times and know it well. You are correct that her performance is slightly different. I notice that she begins immediately with a near full organ, principal reeds and all. Boellemann indicates on the score that it is to begin piano and slowly crescendo to FFF towards the end. She also assumes a relatively quick tempo. Her pedal is also slightly staccato and normally is played legato.
But, I personally like how she plays it very much.
I'm learning this piece at the moment, and this makes me feel better: shows that it is not necessary to play all the semiquavers to get pretty much the right effect, particularly if there is a generous acoustic available.
always a pleasure to hear her. We both studied with same teachers in old Kansas.( more then Dorothy there) I was in Hutchinson and she was in Wichita as I remember those days. Even remember the 10th Ave, days when we were in our teens. God gave uis a GREAT ORGANIST for sure.....
I have to admit that she is a great organist. But I can't understand why this should be her favourite organ - I mean, it's a manufactured neo-baroque organ of low quality - nothing compared to a Cavaillé-Coll organ!
Keep in mind, Youtube is not the best way to judge the quality of an organ. The sound quality on Youtube leaves a lot to be desired. Hearing the organ in real life is really the only way to judge the quality of an organ in my opinion.
@bishfan I played the Tabernacle organ in Temple Square in Salt Lake City, and youtube does not have the quality needed to bring out the true and full sound of an organ. When you are in that Tabernacle, or cathedral or listening to a a pipe organ live, you can hear sounds and voices that no microphone can capture, especailly the 32 footers and larger and reeds. You will hear only half the actual quality of a pipe organ when you are listening to a recording, especially on youtube.
But you could also argue that the largest organ in the world, in Macy's Department Store could be the best because it is largest, its just her best one, but you might find a Cavaillé-Coll better.
I find any Cavaillé-Coll organ better than any american organ! Of course, everyone has different opinion imaginations about a perfect organ. My expectations are powerful reeds, nice strings, celests and flutes, and of course rumbling Bombardes is the pedal, a long reverb, so I see Cavaille-Coll as the best organ builder, maybe your taste is different.
She is probably the greatest organist of all time and I say this coming from a rock background of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. Kudos to Diane Bish!! She is top of the class!!

In the city of Ulm in Southern Germany. Just Google "Ulm, Germany" and there will be all kinds of maps and pictures of this great city.

Ładnie choć moim zdaniem troszke początek za głośno. Powinno się rozpoczynać na cichych rejestrach

The oft cited and undeniably failingly persuasive word, in defence of any performance, I believe, is 'interpretation'.

Just goes to show that you don't have to play all the notes as written in order to get the right effect: a blessing for the rest of us.

If everyone played every piece of music EXACTLY as written....how freaking dull!
