Years ago, before the fall of the Wall, I visitied West and East Berlin both.

Both times I entered East Berlin, it was an intimidating and eery feeling walking from the West to East. East Berlin was interesting to visit, but I found it very oppressive. I felt sad for its people stuck in that regime who had to live there.

I WAS IN BERLIN IN 1979. I TOOK PICTURES OVER THE WALL AT BRANAUER STRASSE IN THE FRENCH SECTOR. THE CHURCH OF THE RECONCILIATION WAS TO THE LEFT OF THE PLATFORM I STOOD ON TO TAKE THE PICTURES OF THE GUARDS ACROSS THE OTHER SIDE IN EAST BERLIN.

Great video, high quality production. One thing I've always been confused by and that's the access route/s to West Berlin from West Germany.

I know there was a motorway connecting the two areas but how was it fortified? Was the border running alongside or was there a checkpoint at each end? Could someone let me know the answer please?

@benjathome There were checkpoints at every crossing point. Generally, East Germany had extremely rigorous security since they considered the border an international border. The Allies just had gatehouses with soldiers. Look up photos of Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse.

@benjathome At the very beginning, the only way in and out West Berlin was through the air. Later you could travel through East Berlin, but they had to tell the authorities beforehand. It took sometimes weeks until you had the right papers. Then, you had to stay at the motorway. You always had to exchange a little bit of money (and you couldn't change it back, so you had some useless Eastern Currency left in the end). Most of the controlling was done on the east side.

Durch Ostberlin führten zwei U-Bahnlinien der BVG West. Die Bahnhöfe waren verschlossen natürlich und wurden nur immer wieder kontrolliert von Grenztruppen.

(Ein Bahnhof, Friedrichstrasse, war ein U-Bahn-Übergangsbahnhof und für Besucher in den Osten sowie für DDR-Rentner in Richtung Westen geöffnet mit entspr. Besuchervisum). Rein theoretisch wäre eine (natürlich trotzdem lebensgefährliche) Flucht durch diese Tunnels aber möglich gewesen hätte man sich irgendwo zufällig Zutritt verschafft.

If I had Palestinians for neighbors Id welcome a wall. The Israelis "live behind" the same wall, for them it is not a hardship because they are not bent on killing people and are not unhappy about being denied the opportunity to do so. They spend their energies building a successful society which is a pleasure to live in.

The Palestinians get billions in Aid, most of the people in gaza and the west bank live on that aid. The population has grown five fold in the past fifty years. They have created slums with their aid. Most of the aid Israel gets is used for defense, NOT to build an economy. Israel is the silicon valley of the middle east as well as a supplier of many goods . Gaza? Nothing!

Discussion 7 months ago: West TV reception in East Germany. No! Yes, all of East Berlin could receive West Berlin radio & TV. BUT you sure didn't talk about it. That would bring trouble. But many parts of E. Germany were outside good TV & radio range. Dresden, Cottbus, Bautzen, Frankfurt a d Oder, etc. They did not have West TV (no cable then) Some secretly watched West TV; BUT you did not talk about it. And that was only in the late 1970's & 80's with the newer (still lousy in the DDR) TVs.

I used to wonder where the morse code came from on certain frequencies - maybe those were military communications for American and Russian ship positions.
