fran9860 - Unless you were there personally it sounds like you have no idea what you are talking about and what you are saying is pure speculation on your part as well. Why do you want to denigrate the woman for no reason other to make yourself look important?
@fran9860 you don't know what you are talking about. was several years later she got hooked on heroin. but even then she was always a profesional in her performance. you couldn't tell she was high, if she was.
@joenatescott The more I learn about these legendary artists the more I realize that in spite of their enormously gifted talents they were human with many of the same problems people still have today (and probably always will have). You'll have to read Anita's book to get a feel of her views on Krupa, Kenton and others. She really bad mouthed Benny Goodman. I have a soft spot in my heart for Anita; she left home at 14 with nothing, nowhere to go & no one to help her. She did good!
if I had a time machine maybe I could go back in time and save Anita from a lot of heartache and drug problems that came along later. probably not. I would have probably been in the marines and gotten killed at Iwo. she couldn't have been saved from her fate anyway. she had a good second husband ( according to her book ) and he couldn't do it. she was just destructive. kind of like Linsay lohann is now. some things and people cannot be changed. well at least she lived a long life.
Gene Krupa made it cool to be a drummer. Charisma, Looks, Talent, and presence.
He looked so much at home behind the kit he seemed like part of the set-up. I could imagine that when he walked off stage the drums followed him by themselves.Yes there where, are, good drummers, but are they as handsome?
This is my favorite soundie & I thank you for sharing it because much of Anita O'Day's 1940's performances in Krupa's & Kenton's orchestras were not recorded on film. It's amazing at how good this soundie was done and how good they all look performing together. There are several interpretations of what a "boogie ride" is, some of which are quite naughty.
Anita was poorly promoted in her career and a global audience is just now beginning to learn about this gorgeous, gifted woman.
thank you for posting this rare "soundie" of Anita, Roy Eldridge & Gene Krupa. It's a rare look at the dancing skills that began the career of this beautiful and gifted jazz legend.
In her auto-biography, Anita tells she was paid a whopping seven bucks for her performance while Krupa nailed down enough to buy a house. IShame on you, Krupa, it wasn't fair to Anita or Roy!
For the clueless, "soundies" came decades before MTV and VH1 and Anita O'Day was there first

I've recently watched 'The Life of a Jazz Singer' a movie about her life. Amazing woman, unique singer, elegant, hot and such a bright character ! 100% agree with raleighman3000 : where's my damn tiem machine !!??
C'mon, drdee., I think the REAL meaning of a boogie ride becomes clear when Roy points to his horn and tells Anita he's got her boogie ride right there. It was the 40s, that's as clear as they could spell it out in those days. Don't forget, Anita starts out by telling us she's more that gratified!
This is what Jose Fritz said about what a Boogie Ride is:
"A boogie is a simple guitar structure: the B and C are played by stretching the fourth finger from the A2 and A3 frets up to B and C on the same string. All true boogie patterns are played with a swing or shuffle rhythm. In the early part of the century the term boogie meant rent-party. Its an ancient American tradition of musicians passing the hat at house parties events to pay the rent.
wow this really rocks man! Hey, you suppose kieth moon maybe idolized krupa when he was growing up? Same poses and postures, like the way morrisson loved sinatra--what great stuff.
If Keith Moon really idolized Gene Krupa then Moon would have learned to play drums well. There exists no relationship between poses and gestures vs skill and musical talent.
Oh my gosh! I hope this video stays on YouTube for a long time. I found it a long time ago, I lost it, then found it last month. Ahhh! Anita O'day makes my day... I love her voice. such a cute song.
O'Day was totally uninhibited and she could swing. Her approach was totally different than The Misty Miss Christy and it is unfair to compare the two.
this is so much fun....thank you
