That's why they don't use real katana? While I suppose it is *possible* to kill someone with a shinai, it's not very likely. The original intent was not a game, but to train swordsmen who could then go out and kill people, if necessary. Martial arts didn't start as games/sports.
Interesting....Kobayashi seemed to be quite methodical....even aggressive. I don't really know much about kendo, but I would rarely attack somebody in chuudan which seems to be the starting point for everything in kendo. I guess you are trying to attack the Men or the Do, so gedan is not really useful, but joudan could be effective I imagine. Are attacks to the hands scored?

@mouxou97, yes. Targets in Kendo are Men, Do, Kote (hands) and Tsuki (throat). More explanations are a lot on the net.
