Marilyn Monroe. The Queen of cinema. I understand this movie wasn't a comedy or a musical yet it goes down on my list as being the best dramatic performaces Marilyn Monroe did on the big screen. I think it was clever how Marilyn disguised her american accent in this movie to make it sound more broader. Well done.
She was an amazing actress and comedian! Stardom and her most sexy American woman image tended to cover that up, but if you watch all her movies you'll see.
Marilyn Monroe... a real myth, of course she can act, of course she can sing, but... the studio didn't supported her that much at that time, it's a real shame, Marilyn was really overtalented for been an entertainer
This woman had a perfect figure for a young lady. I myself prefer the boyish hips on a female, like in Kate Perry and Marylin has a more bodied hips but she looks fcking good. I guess it's because she was born with everything else! It's too bad we have to remember her as a blond bombshell cause she was a preety gal and was a star attraction in any movie starred in. I have to wonder where she was in her life to have taken her own life....I do still believe she wasn't in on it alone!& thx
@TimaoTexas2008 THe point of the movie and this scene is that Cherie has no talent, which makes her dreams of being a movie star so sad. In real ife, MM had a terrific voice. She sang in most of her movies, in fact.
Marilyn is singing here. Her accent and clumsy delivery are deliberate; that's how she's portraying this character--and beautifully. I remember as a child being impressed at how vulnerable she was here. Such a shame she left us so early.
I love this scene It I'm never tired of it. Don Murray did an incredible job in this movie. I love how he charged through the door and then found his angel.
Marilyn embodied Art , she saw her face as a tool in which to express it. Her close-ups in this film are breathtaking, although she inhabits Cherie in the film , watch her take instances to "do Marilyn" 3:10 your lips meet mine. Her head is thrown back (something supernaturally beautiful with her head at angle), the voice softens , goes back on pitch then its back to Cherie.
And of course, we know Marilyn was playing a girl with no talent here. In reality, she sang very well. Irving Berlin and Cole Porter both loved the way she sang their songs. It's not easy to sing badly when you actually have singing talent. She was so much more talented than even she realized.
Brilliant. I LOVE it when she hits the light switch with her foot. She's a genius. HIlarious, touching and gorgeous. [She's singing "live." The director, Joshua Logan, didn't want her to have to worry about lip synching to a track. The musicians are really playing and she's really singing.]
Marilyn sings here deliberately slightly off-key but with a big heart and lightly. She knew how characterize the characters that she played.Very great actress
Her performance is so brilliant in this because she had more control over the picture. She chose the costume she wore and the way her makeup was done etc. Her acting is brill in this movie, she had more talent than she was credited for :(
@theclomo69 yes she chose an old costume from the 20th century fox's wardrobe dept , then ripped the stockings deliberatly. She worked closely with Milton Green to get the look she wanted .The white skin and rosey blonde hair.
@theclomo69 Yes, I agree with you about her under estimated talent. She had extraordinary comic timing esp in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire and Some Like it Hot.;and though not a trained dancer this girl could move with grace and musicality. And brother! could she sell a song!!! cuz she could sing from the heart. This performance here where she intentionally plays a NO TALENT performer is really adorable and very brave. Nobody like her before or since. Miss her!
The POINT of the movie and this song is that Cherie has no talent--that's why her aspirations to go to Hollywood are so comic(tragic) If you see her other movies she sang very well indeed.
In Bus Stop,Marilyn plays the part of" Chérie" a lost talentless chantoose , deaming of Hollywood,so she sings OUT of the tune ON PURPOSE.Nevertheless, she is great during the song, because it's Marilyn 's black magic.

she deserved an Oscar for this brilliant comedic performance
but she was pro civil rights and a scrapper who always tried to get Hoover's goat
so he killed her

the most retarded actor in Hollywood that couldn't follow the simplest set directions was Spencer Tracy
he was an FBI collaborator, so directors had to cast him, or else
