The Mystery dungeon style of games are used in a lot of different unrelated franchises. However Dragon Warrior/Quest have been doing it since 1993 in the Torneko spin-off series. The first game in that series came out for the Super Famicom (SNES) in 1993
this is the prequel/spin off of "Dragon Quest VIII: journey of the cursed king". This game is called "Dragon Quest: Young Yangus and the Mysterious Dungeon" it follows around the 12 year old yangus
If you want a Mystery Dungeon game, then get Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Space, and the Sky. (First two available now, third one coming in Fall of 2009.
