@777Catlove, if that had been me, I'd have said, Im sorry, but I'll let you come in if you promise to play Apache, Wonderful land and FBI with me for a while ;)
I had never seen this video before, and thought Hank Marvin looked very Jewish in it! That beautiful smile knocked me out as well. Those were the days - beautiful memories.
@777Catlove Actually Hank is a Jehova's Witness. He lives in a northern suburb of Perth Australia in the Swan Valley. He once called at my house with his wife, telling the story of Jesus. It was a strange moment. I suppose few Australians recognise him, but to have him knock on my door with copies of their magazine was a surreal experience. A very nice and sincere man. Whenever Cliff Richard played venues in Perth, Hank would appear in stage giving concert goers a rare and unannounced reunion.
@DennisShe1 Jet Harris left The Shadows in April 1962 and was first replaced by Brian "Licorice" Locking. After eighteen months Brian left and John Rostill started playing with The Shadows
and it was the biggest mistake I must say. Harris preferred to be original, to make fine and perfect bass in song. After Harris they made their own style. Rostill was good bassist too, but Harris was better, RIP Jet
Did 5 people get lost while surfing the 'net and take out their personal frustrations on the "dislike" button? Or did 5 people just sneeze before hitting "like"?
Tony Meehan's drumming is brilliantly understated compared to much of the repetitive bashing these days...try playing some Toby Keith numbers and see what I mean - terrible drumming
@squirell1952 .According to one of the books on The Shadows Tony Meehan was fired for bad time keeping, after frequently turning up late for shows. He joined Decca as part of A&R.Jet Harris remained for some months and played on half of the bands second album ,before being fired himself for "Wayward Habits"...it doesn't say what they were, but I'd love to know !!..Jet later joined Tony at Decca.
sign of a good band is they make people's toes tap. Sign of a great band is they create a whole new sound and everyone wants to make it. The Shadows are just that little bit more than great! Pity I never heard them live. Fab posting, Nick in London
Unfortunately it is also the late Tony Meehan( who passed away a few years ago)
Jet and Tony... a Top Class act nin their own right when they left.
The original is always the best...so the saying goes..I believe it is so true here.
All the others who joined excellent tho.
We will never see their like again.
One thing that has always puzzled me was Hanks appearance a deliberate attempt to look like Buddy Holly ( he does resemble him) or was it just a coincidence?
@dw69ful - At the time I don't think Hank deliberately set out to look like Buddy Holly, its pure coincidence. Hank grew up with horn rimmed glasses because he was terribly near sighted and needed the thicker glass for his sight correction. There was no "light glass" in the fifties.
The original Shads - Hank, Bruce, Tony Meehan and the late Jet Harris. Who can remember who replaced Tony and Jet when they left? Brian Bennett as drummer is easy to remember.............who was the new bassist??
@CliffShads John Farrar, when he was with the Shadows (after the demise of Marvin,Welch and Farrar), did not play bass. He played duet lead with Hank.
@Brooksider100 Jet Harris was replaced by Brian Locking. He left in November 1963 to be replaced by John Rostill who stayed withn the group until 1970. Since then they only used session players on a long term basis, people like Alan Tarney Alan Jones and Mark Griffiths.
Of all their 3 bass players in the 1960s John Rostill had to be the best. Accurate and driving style that really stood out and took bass playing to a new level.
@Brooksider100 Brian Locking replaced Jet Harris,he didn't stay for long, but does appear in Summer Holiday,he was replaced by John Rostill, who stayed with the band until they split up at the end of the 60's.
exactly, Harris was the best. After Harris' exodus they have never done song such as beautiful as Apache or Wonderful Land, of course Hank is still perfect
One of my favourites from the Shadows, great to see them here. So sad to hear of Jet Harris's death in March of this year, a great loss. Thank you for posting this
Such a joy to watch real musicians playing real music! This is a timeless classic by one of the world's finest instrumental bands ever! The magic of The Shadows music is legendary!
I wonder how Jet felt at this time. Brian's drumming, so Tony has left - or was he sacked? - & Jet is about to join him. Not sure how long this line up lasted...
Wow this song is great! This is one of those songs where when your done listening to it. It just gets stuck inside of your head. Which isn't a bad thing.
@Strawberry7Lynn Its Brian bennett on drums, though they are miming so you actually hear Tony Meehan playing. Tony had left by the time the song was released in Feb 1962,
One a hell of a cool band. Jet Harris and Hank Marvin were outstanding. The Shads had massive ability and style. Always loved the little bow at the end of their number.
Interesting time period as Brian has already replaced Tony, but Jet has yet to jump ship. Jet Harris, the first Brit rock and roller that really did look the part.

Who's playing the violins? Don't pull my leg you mean your question! The same chap who's ringing the bells for the Herman's Hermits 'No milk today' live performance. BUT BOTH OF THEM ARE FANTASTIC MUSIC! And this is the point.
This is one of the best songs that have ever existed. And that's a great achievement for a song without lyrics. And still it feels like the song is telling me a story. That's my opinion.
The Shadows' Wonderful Land with Norrie Paramor Orchestra is just great. This is the type of tune that the original Shadows played when they started. The touches of Jet Harris and Tony Meehan thus made the difference.
I had just been playing guitar for a couple of years when Shadows recordings began surfacing here in the states in the early 60's (as imports only) . They were a real breath of fresh air to learn compared to the Ventures whom we were already used to. "Wonderful Land" was one of the exceptional, along with "Atlantis" and "Apache," all three of which were written by British songwriter, Jerry Lordan.
I was born in 1969. Yes when the man landed on the moon. My father put earphones on my head many times. I fell in love with this band at a young age and appreciated guitars.
Ok Simonlliley ! Got your point! Yes it is Tony Meehan playing the Sound Track his last with the group by the way !! But Brian Bennett is miming it here ! : ) And thanks For that!!
THis is mimed as you can tell the drums are Tony Meehan who of course had left by the time the song was released in Feb 1962. It must have been between then and April 1962 when Jet Harris left.
Yes, it`s the singles version (you can hear both the strings and French horn), and there are no guitar amps on stage.. but a WONDERFUL tune nonetheless
Yes it's mimed....it's the singles version. Where is the "Norrie Paramor Orchestra" dubbing the guys ? Bruce is playing a Fender Strat, but You hear a Martin Accoustic....
It is definitely mimed as it is identical to the single. The Shadows recorded their track in May 1961 and afterwards Norrie Paramor dubbed on the strings. The drummer is without question Tony Meehan on the soundtrack. Page 70 of " A Pocket Guide to Shadow Music" confirms this.
Simon, I agree thats its mimed but if you know your shadows history when Brian Bennett first joined the shadows he used a black trixon set where as Tony Meehan used a gretch champange set and if you look carefully at this clip you will see a black set of drums and a clear shot of brian at the drums
I agree that it is Brian on the clip, but my point is that the soundtrack drums is Tony Meehan. He played on the original recording made in May 1961, Norrie added the strings and the track was released in Feb 1962 by which time Brian had been the drummer nearly 6 months.
I agree that we can see Brian Bennett, but you can hear Tony Meehan. They are miming to their single therefore the sound you hear on drums can only be Tony Meehan.
the drummer in this clip is Brian Bennett that is surprising

THis is mimed as you can tell the drums are Tony Meehan who of course had left by the time the song was released in Feb 1962. It must have been between then and April 1962 when Jet Harris left.

Yes, it`s the singles version (you can hear both the strings and French horn), and there are no guitar amps on stage.. but a WONDERFUL tune nonetheless

Yes it's mimed....it's the singles version. Where is the "Norrie Paramor Orchestra" dubbing the guys ? Bruce is playing a Fender Strat, but You hear a Martin Accoustic....
But it is mimed perfectly :-)

Simon, that is not Tony Meehan on drums but his very worthy successor Brian Bennett

My all time favorite Shads tune! A haunting melody, great strings (on the single) and a great 60s sound.. It`s just Wonderful!

Not a lot of show from them, but the tune speaks for itself~ Easily, one of the coolest & greatest instrumentals ever.
Nice to see them at this time.
Thanks much for this!
