@bluegrasssingingman Actually this songs writer is unknown and was recorded by many before Bill Monroe. The first recording was by Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers in 1927. The most popular version was by the Blue Sky Boys.
@headredbone Country sucks, look at country today. It doesn't exist anymore. Once the GREAT MR. BILL MONROE did a song it became his. There is no better and never will be. You sure, of you're self? Bill Monroe was out 7 years before. Bluegrass was discovered in 1920. Have you ever heard of Mountain Music? It is the music before Bluegrass. Bluegrass is the first American Music. Mountain music became from all the Settlers. The style developed when they combined. Bluegrass rocketed around 1940.
@bluegrasssingingman yes sir, I am sure of myself. Banks of the Ohio has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it on the Opry, on a battery powered radio. It is not hard to research it with todays technology. Hey, I love Bill Monroe as much as you or anyone else, but give credit where it is due. Bill was far from the first to record Banks of the Ohio. He may have been out 7 years before, still did not record the song till years later.
@bluegrasssingingman Bill Monroe was working in an oil refinery in Indiana in 1929. He got his first recording contract, along with his brother, in 1936. Quite a time after 1920.
@headredbone You make no sense. Because Mr. Monroe worked in a Oil refinery. the claim your making is, some one else made Bluegrass Music, or Mr. Monroe just dreamed it up over night in 1936. Because of a recording contract. So before 1936 he never played music? I believe in the 1920's pretty much Music was only live shows. Have a good day.
@bluegrasssingingman i never said he did not play music till 1936. I said he got his first recording contract in 1936. Look it up. It is not hard to find.
@bluegrasssingingman Stick to your country music, and country artist. Next you will be saying is country music is a lot harder to play then Bluegrass.
At first I thought" who the heck is this durn hillbilly". Ya got charm, kept finding myself singing along with ya in my head. Kept buzzin around that empty spot between the ears all day. Had to come back and find you again today.. Truly enjoyed it and thats kind rare.
This song I've always liked. I grew up on the Ohio. Now I live in Knoxville (Knoxville Girl is very like this song. I love them both.
