  • Yeah, thanks for taking the time to post that one. One of the best ever.

  • TOP....... not heard this for years and here it is.......thanks for posting mate you have great taste!

  • Takes me back to the sporting club in fleetwood. How old am I??

  • @episkopi08 old, just like me m8

  • anyone know where you can hear their version of "keep a knocking

  • Brilliant song for anytime frame. First heard it in the early 70s. I rememebr all that old music like Humble Pie The Stones, Genesis, Free. I hate to sound like an old fart but dammit they just don't make music like this anymore.

  • Check out Ashley and Karl Duet 2 and let me know what you think.

  • Even at the time I thought it was a bit wierd. After a couple of listenings I relented. I just can't explain it. it's brill.

  • I saw Roger Chapman at the Robin Hood in Brierley Hill around 2001 absolutely briiliant, the venue has since been bulldozed, and is part of a shopping centre, How sad is that?

  • what a great track one of the best of the 70s

  • Apparently this was the rehearsal take which explains the vocal fluff at the beginning (00.24). So good a take, it was the released version. Great groove.

  • No comments for at least a year, but i literally heard this on bbc 6 music, but they didnt say who/what artist/song was, no logged on to 6 music to read music shedule to find out, and hey presto! here I am. Song is simply awsome - ooooozes personality

  • How the hell do you think up a song like this? Ah, talent I suppose! Great song from a great time.

  • Darn, I was hoping to find a clip of 'em doing this on TOTP, when RC collapsed in a giggling heap at the base of his mic stand whilst the band looked round amused, filling in the backing vox over his guffawing. Not bad!

  • it has to be said, roger chapman had a superb voice, this song just doesn't date.

  • Superb !!!!! I really enjoyed listening and added it to my my favourites. Thanks for posting

  • Best/HQ version on YouTube. Funky, funky bass.

  • Cooler than a very cool thing !!!

Found this when searching for another tune , can only remember the opening bars though !! Thought it was a Mungo Jerry track but I've listened to everything of his I can and it isn't !! I do have a vague memory that Ringo played the drums and it's mainly instrumental and the year was '72. Will keep trawling the chart lists for a memory jog.

  • ringo can play the drums??? news to me

  • Lennon said it best when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, to which he replied "Best drummer in the world? He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles!"

  • Nice to hear this back on Utube...so WMG...go and fuck yourself!

  • Gggggggggggggggggggggggreat!

  • great

  • Great song ! Rock on Chappo - the best voice ever ! ta , who needs pictures any way

  • Comment removed

  • were covering this song in our set,its fucking hot shit.love the pre chorus,we all really get behind it, and really enjoy playing it im 27 lol.cool song.

  • Would you share the name of your band and city you're in?

  • Leicester England

  • Not much will make me watch a blank screen...this is so good. I return time and again.

  • Too cool tune. Memory lane may be fading but it's still the sweetest street in the neighborhood. This is when musicians had the freedom to do their thing and not worry about some label wanting them to do the same song over and over again. Long live the 70's. Free' Humble Pie ' Trower. Yes. Genesis. The Move I could go on and on. This is when rock music had it's peak . Now it's a soulless shell of what made it great.

  • Spot on DrWinkle. Well put. Now for some Jethro Tull.

  • From the days when a pop/rock single could be made by brilliant musicians with no interference from management. From when rock was grown up and artistically rich in complex arrangements, intriguing lyrics and still balls-out funky.

  • I found Roger, flat out pissed, on a platform at Victoria Station when this was in the charts. It was a scene straight out of this song. What a character!

  • what a great song. roger chapman is one mighty singer.

  • thank you!!! after many years from the day that i've lost this record, finally i can enjoy great family. thank you again

    giusi from italy

  • My ex used to dance to this mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • so did Miss Bland mmmmmmmm!

  • Just a black screen?! make it a bit more intresting!!!!!!!!! great song though ;)

  • fantastic,beutiful...time.....

  • Well, drinking and sinking, I'm feeling alright, right down to my snakey spat shoes.

Destination burlesque, I got all my cards in one shoe (there's an epitaph if ever there was one). Rita and Greta etc. Wonder where they are now? Unforgettable stuff. Never saw Family but this record is etched into my memory. Such a contrast to pop music nowadays. Excellent voice Chapman has. Wonderful thanks.

  • I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written. I bought this single and then the album. Burlesque sounds as amazing as ever. It's timeless. It will always sound raw and fresh. I could never get bored with this song. Thanks for posting it.

  • its a pleasure

  • @stealthrimmer saw Family on their farewell tour in 73, great sounds especially chapmans vocals

  • @3456jcw Whoops it was 75 cos I saw them at the Reading festival in 74, my friend the sun was brilliant cos as chapman started singing "cos my friend the sun" it came out from the rain...... a great moment

  • Fantastic!!!!One of the most underated bands of all time. Thanks for posting it!

  • One of my all time favourites, absolutely classic, I was lucky enough to see Roger Chapman at a pub called the Robin Hood in Brierly hill about six or seven years ago, he pumped burlesque out with his usual enthusiasm if nyone was there that night he had a young girl on backing vocals whose voice was absolutelt amazing if anyone knows who she is I would be grateful

  • If it's the time I saw him there, then I'm afraid it's a lot longer than "six or seven" years ago - more like 15+ - Merry Hill wasn't even fully developed. They were great that night, if a little loud! (Don't remember the girl, I'm afraid)

  • Helen Hardy perhaps?

  • Thank you, I have checked that out and you were right it was her, what a beeautiful voice, thank you again

  • amazing tune, great sound. It is as good now as when I first heard it in 1972 (ish, a bit hazy on the memory.)

  • I remember hearing this on radio 1 in the 70s and i thought this is fucking brilliant.

    And still sounds good today.

  • Seconded , Timeless -

  • It sucks that they never broke through in America. They definitely would have been a big hit here if it wasn't for all the bad luck that happened on their first tour.

  • Absolute Classic, Roger chapmans voice is incredible. think he gargles with razorblades.

  • Fantastic to find this after all these years thanks for posting it. The album was pretty good Bandstand I think it was called

    Cheers

  • Who cares about a video the VOICE says it all. Never thought I would hear this again and it's just as good and unusual now as it was then .....umm so my Mum tells me.

  • now if only there were a live video version around somewhere ...

  • this lineup with wetton on bass kills

  • brilliant post!!

    i'd forgotten this awesome song!

what a bloody voice. and what a baseline!

i think 'burlesque' is a strip-joint or brothel in america, isn't it? in france, it's a kind of circus. i prefer a brothel, personally. circus clowns freak me out!

  • I think the 'burlesque' in the song refers to a club in Leiceter (wher the band are from) - this song was around when I was in the sixth form!

  • Jeez, do people live that long? Burleseque is an "adult" nightclub, for couples not exactly a strip joint, bu like the Moulin Rouge in Paris, more erotic than sleazy.

  • Roger Chapman has awesome voice, one of a kind

  • It is easy to forget just how good family where. This groove is awsome even by todays standards.

I saw them live in 1971 a couple of times and will never forget Chappo jumping of the stage to remonstrate with a goon in the audience.

What is Chappo and other band members now doing?

  • Probably watching Jethro Tull on youtube! Seriusly though they were something else. Tull forever.

  • Loved this while at school in the 70's. still sounds great today. Glad to have found this on U-tube. Thanks

  • Lovely. It still sounds great, with a wonderful groove. It reminds me of my teenage years, learning to smoke and discovering girls! Thanks for posting it.

  • Ahhh 1972...15 hangin with other teens into quality music...Santana/Roxy/Bowie/Led Zepp/& countless others...loved this track & "In my own time"...1972 was when "top of the pops" was cool!? Roger's voice, the funkatavity of the band...fabulous, just fabulous, thanks for posting this!

  • brill....thanks

  • Thank God somebody put this on! I've been searching for this for ages.. Real Groove - not like todays plastic/overproduced/no-feel bollocks!!!!

  • Oh my god, i just need to respond to the "twats" posting silly comments. We don't all like the same music. If we did, the world would be a very boring place. If you don't like it.....why post anything? Fool!

I love this. It is fab! Thank you very much for posting it!

  • When was this 1972? they knew how to kick arse then!

  • omg that wasnt me doen there lindaaa waz it you

  • Saw Roger Chapman in Aachen a few years ago. "Whats this a F§***** morgue" were his opening comments. Great night, just about fifty of us. He chewed gum the whole time while singing. Thanks for posting!

  • It's a good thing we don't all like the same music, I think this is vintage R&R!

  • who ever put this on is a twat !!

  • Hands up - I'm a twat

  • A TWAT?? Allyokay is a HERO for posting this.I was looking through my L.P.s for something else when I ran accross this. I KNEW it would be on youtube. I'm going to bring this song to band practice. We got this in the U.S. I was 19. It was all good then, and it's all good now. Thank you Allyokay

  • My pleasure

  • Pity there's no footage available, such a great song.

  • this is a blodey crap thing not a video just music

  • "I know", "Blodey crap" "Just music" ho hum

  • Love thsi track, was so happy to find it thanks xxx

  • when the funfair came to town... this was the tune still is

  • Saw roger at club in Grimsby he jumped up and put his head through the ceiling , what a night the guy has a amazing sound plus he is a complete nutter !!!!

  • Anyone got the TOTP video from October 1972? I was at scouts and Roger Chapman fell off the stage (my Mum told me...)

  • I was really hoping that's what this would be. I remember 'Chappo' laughing too much to sing the chorus, eventually collapsing in a heap at the base of his mic stand, as the others swapped nervous glances whilst mumbling along. Top TV! (Unfortunately before home video recorders.)

  • Happy even to hear

  • Thanks - brings back great memories

  • use your imagination.

  • This is not a video
